Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Anaretic degree: The final degree (29th degree) of any sign; also known as the degree of fate. Many astrologers believe that signs in the 29th degree – especially water signs – lend a considerable measure of intuitive, empathic and psychic ability to the native with planets in this degree. Angles: The lines of the chart wheel which lie at 0 degrees (the ascendant), 90 degrees (the I.C.), 180 degrees (the descendant), and 270 degrees (the M.C.). These are major points in a chart and represent Cardinal Qualities. Angular: A cardinal point in the horoscope Angular Houses: Houses 1, 4, 7, and 10 of the horoscope, which are positioned closest to the charts primary angles; ascendant, nadir, descendant, and Midheaven. Arabic Parts: Sensitive points on a chart developed by Arabic astrologers. These are calculated by adding the positions of two factors in the chart (e.g., Moon and Ascendant) and subtracting the position of a third factor. (e.g., Sun). Aquarian Age: A time period of approximately 2,160 years where the influence of Aquarius is prominent. An astrological age lasts for approximately 2,160 years and precesses or moves backward through the Zodiac. Also known as Precession. Some astrologers believe that the Age of Aquarius starts at approximately the new millennium. However, because of the discrepancy inflicted on the calendar by Pope Gregory, who gave us the Gregorian Calendar (which we still use today), the original timing was temporarily deviated from.

Origin and Customs of the Chinese New Year1 Haiwang Yuan, Professor from Western Kentucky University Guest Professor from CFL, Nankai University Author2 “What date is the Chinese New Year?” The Chinese ask themselves every year, but few can answer it off the top of their head. Believe it or not, they have to refer to the Chinese calendar to get the answer. The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, which means it shows elements of both the lunar and solar calendars. The Chinese use the Gregorian calendar to live their daily lives while using the Chinese lunar calendar to observe their traditional festivals and conduct their folk activities. Based on the moon’s revolution around the Earth, it is about 11 days shorter each year than the solar calendar. To synchronize with the time the Earth needs to rotate around the sun, the Chinese ancestors added a leap month to their calendar every two or three years.

Both the zodiac and natal astrology appear to be fully formed by the 5th century BCE. Tycho Brahe and Kepler achieved great breakthroughs in astronomical observation and the systematic development of scientific laws, but were also both practitioners of astrology. The following table summarizes the rulership by the seven classically known planets [21] of each of the twelve astrological signs, [22] together with their effects on world events, people and the earth itself as understood in the Middle Ages. The leading astronomers were also astrologers. Toni Dore says:. • A Brief Overview of the History of Western Astrology © 1998 Hamish Saunders
A Brief Overview of the History of Western Astrology © 1998 Hamish Saunders If you asked a random selection of people to define what astrology is the most likely response would be something like "It's the star sign column in the paper", probably followed by "I do have to confess that I occasionally read mine but I don't take it seriously." Sun sign astrology, which is what our ‘random selection’ is referring to here, is a very recent phenonomen in the world, especially in the world of astrology. The first sun sign column appeared in England in 1930 after the birth of Princess Margaret. R.H. Naylor wrote an astrological profile of the newborn princess in the London Daily Express. 1 So enthusiastic was the response to this from the public that the newspaper employed Naylor as their full- time astrological columnist. The astrology that interests us in this article is thousands of years old and has played a central role in shaping the religion, philosophy, politics, science, art and day-to-day affairs of most world civilisations. The word 'astrology' (from the Greek astron - star, and logos - study) is literally the study of the stars and the age-old partner of astronomy. In fact, before the 17th century the two words 'astrology' and 'astronomy' were interchangeable, and practitioners of either were usually skilled in both disciplines. Astronomy is perhaps considered more scientific while astrology more philosophical. The origins of western astrology are not crystal clear but astrologers generally acknowledge four stages in its development: Pre-literate astrology, which pre-dates recorded history Ancient astrology, from about 2000 BC to around 200 AD Traditional astrology, from about the 2nd century AD to the 17th century Modern astrology, from the 1700's to the present day.2 Pre-historic Beginnings Pre-literate astrology consisted mainly of astronomical observation for pragmatic reasons.
