Casa Modica Modica, Nr Ragusa, Sicily Casa Modica Modica, nr Ragusa, Sicily Sleeps 10 guests, 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms DESCRIPTION Large villa with pool Sicily - dating back to the 18th century, this beautifully restored masseria farmhouse with adjacent ' guard tower' enjoys a dominant hillside position overlooking the countryside around Modica. It has the unusual bonus of a second pool, as well as plenty of places to relax, both indoors and out. Several excellent sandy beaches are within easy reach, as are a number of UNESCO world heritage sites, and there are plenty of good restaurants and shops in the nearby town. Casa Modica has been sympathetically restored and furnished in keeping with the island's heritage. The large living room is centred around an attractive open fireplace, whilst the bedrooms are traditionally furnished with beautiful wrought-iron beds. The characterful kitchen is in brickwork and is decorated with locally-made majolica pottery; it even has a typical internal fireplace/barbecue. An internal courtyard - baglio - surrounds the second swimming pool: this is a superb sun-trap and a great place to relax and soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere. The villa is surrounded by quintessential Sicilian countryside: cornfields bordered by dry stone walls, interspersed with cactus plants and wild flowers. If you're hoping to spend time at the beach during your holiday, you have chosen a good place to stay. Some of the closest sandy beaches and rocky coves are to be found at the stunning nature reserve of Vendicari - these unspoilt beaches are not equipped, so you will need to take a picnic! There are also several very good sandy beaches (some equipped with sun beds and beach cafés) at Pozzallo, Marina di Modica and Sampieri. Other places to visit in the area would definitely include Siracuse: a wander around the central island district of Ortygia is not to be missed, particularly during the mornings when the colourful street market is held; and for those who are interested, a visit to the city's famous Greek and Roman ruins would round the day off perfectly. Ragusa Ibla, Noto, the fascinating cave dwellings at Ispica (Cave d'Ispica) and a longer day trip to the Greek temples at Agrigento are other options. With horse riding and tennis also available locally, and the fantastic cuisine of Sicily on offer all around you, there is something for everyone at Casa Modica large villa with pools Sicily. La ricerca vuole offrire spunti di riflessione su un’ area della Sicilia dalla storia antica: la Contea di Modica. Una storia, quella della Contea, che affonda le proprie radici indietro nel tempo, scandita da diverse dominazioni che hanno lasciato i “segni” impressi sul territorio, interessato da nefasti eventi naturali che hanno determinato via via l’assetto urbanistico, politico, economico e sociale. Per meglio comprendere le caratteristiche dei centri, che un tempo fecero parte della gloriosa Contea, si è cercato di cogliere gli aspetti percettivi anche attraverso la cartografia storica, che contribuisce a dare il “senso dei luoghi” e la loro “immagine”. Obiettivo del lavoro è quello di evidenziare le forti potenzialità turistiche di questo territorio, non soltanto per la presenza di un patrimonio artistico di valore inestimabile, eredità delle variegate ed alterne vicende umane espresse nelle diverse forme di cultura materiale ed immateriale, ma anche per i grandi giacimenti naturali. Sono stati, inoltre, indagati i punti di forza di Ragusa, Modica e Scicli, città che appartennero all’antica Contea. Questi tre centri fanno parte con Caltagirone, Catania, Militello in Val di Catania e Noto di un ampio progetto denominato il “Piano di Gestione del Val di Noto” che ha come obiettivo l’analisi di tutte le risorse comprese in questa vasta area avente come unico comune denominatore il Barocco, già riconosciuto dall’Unesco patrimonio dell’umanità, e coglierne nel contempo le differenze.

The town of Agrigento and the surrounding Valley of Temples represents a place of world importance because of the historical, archaeological and artistic value of their monuments. Since ancient time the town planning expansion of Agrigento has been controlled by the particular geological set up of the area and the repeated and extensive instability phenomena The safeguard of this precious cultural heritage is seriously threatened by slope failures including falls, rock topples and rock slides involving the calcarenitic outcrops. While rotational and translational slides occur when failures develop in the clay and sandy-silt soils below the calcarenitic levels, involving wide areas. This paper explains the geological and structural set up, the geotechnical aspects and man-made factors that exert major influence on this phenomena, on the stability of the area and on the basal foundation of the temples, above all of the Juno Temple.     [email protected] The Barocco Valley – Noto, Modica and Ragusa Today meet our staff and departure for Noto. In the Arab period the town was the capital of one of the three districts of Sicily (the Val di Noto) and once defeated by the Christians, Noto became a rich Norman city. Unfortunately it was - totally destroyed by the 1693 Sicilian earthquake and rebuilt in a new position nearer to the Ionian Sea. But the new Noto is a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque! Most of the buildings, including churches and noble palaces, follow one another along the main street - and are characterized by the honey tonality of tufa stone. Facades and balconies are all skillfully decorated by grinning masks, lion heads, putti and other embellishments. Unmissable is Noto Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Nicholas and built in perfect Sicilian Baroque style. - Then to Modica. Like the other towns in the Val di Noto, was badly damaged in the 1693 earthquake and largely rebuilt in Sicilian Baroque style. It is divided into two parts, “higher” Modica and “lower” Modica, which are connected by numerous flights of steps. Palazzi and houses rise from the bottom of the gorge Italian, English seemingly stacked one on top of the other. Magnificent churches, with their inspiring domes, bell towers and intricate facades, punctuate the red-tiled roofs and one is struck by the uniform beauty of the whole. Modica has a long and varied history, complete with the usual toing and froing of successions of invaders. It came to real prominence in 1296, when Frederick II of Aragon (not to - be confused with Frederick II “Stupor Mundi”) formed the “County of Modica”, a kind of “state within a state” that was initially governed by Mandfredi I Chiaramonte.
