Sports, Theatre and Entertainment in the Ancient World
Athletics, spectator sports, theatre, and other pastimes have become a consuming activity in our own time, cut short, at least temporarily, by our recent pandemic. How did these and other diversions develop in history? Are their antecedents found in the ancient world, especially in Greece and Rome? In this presentation, we will investigate the cultural roots and evolution of entertainment, especially the Greek and Roman games, as well as their theatre. Remember that the term culture comes from the Latin word cultus, in that most, if not all, of these activities have their origins in religious festivals or rites. We will also look into the social, economic and political dimensions of entertainment in antiquity. Since the Greek Olympic Year of 2014, dozens of studies have appeared that have enriched our understanding of these themes. While we will be concentrating on Greece and Rome, we will also briefly take glances of possible parallel developments in China, Egypt, Phoenicia, Byzantium, and elsewhere. Histos () – MOTHER OF SNAKES AND KINGS: APOLLONIUS RHODIUS’ FOUNDATION OF ALEXANDRIA* Abstract: Of all the lost Foundation Poems attributed to Apollonius Rhodius, active at the court of Ptolemy II, the Ktisis of Alexandria must have been the most important for his contemporaries, and surely is the most intriguing for modern scholars of the Hellenistic world. Unfortunately, only a brief mention of this epyllion survives, in a scholion to Nicander’s Theriaka , relating to the birth of poisonous snakes from the severed head of Medusa, carried by Perseus over Libya . Deadly and benign serpents belong to a multi- cultural symbolic imagery intertwined with the Greek, Macedonian, Egyptian and Jewish origins of the city. This paper explores the possible connections of the only episode preserved from Apollonius’ Ktisis with the most ancient known traditions on the foundation of Alexandria —possibly even created at the time of Alexander or of the first Lagid dynasts, Ptolemy I and II. Ström ©2010 ABSTRACT The Erysichthon of Ovid’s Metamorphoses is given, in James Lasdun’s re-telling of the story, a repeat performance of chopping down a sacred tree, receiving the punishment of insatiable hunger, selling his daughter, and eating himself. Transgressive greed, impiety, and environmental destruction are elements appearing already amongst the Greek sources of this ancient myth, but Lasdun adds new weight to the environmental issues he brings out of the story, turning Erysichthon into a corrupt property developer. The modern American setting of “Erisychthon” lets the poem’s themes roam a long distance down the roads of self- improvement, consumption, and future-centredness, which contrast with Greek ideas about moderation, and perfection being located in the past. These themes lead us to the eternally unfulfilled American Dream. Backing up our ideas with other sources from or about America, we discover how well the Erysichthon myth fits some of the prevailing approaches to living in America, which seem to have stemmed from the idea that making the journey there would lead to a better life. We encounter not only the relationship between Ovid and Lasdun’s versions of the story, but between the earth and its human inhabitants, and find that some attitudes can be traced back a long way. -

Jaffe A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Political Science University of Toronto (2012) This project illuminates Thucydides’ political thought through a novel interpretation of the first book of the History of the Peloponnesian War. It explores how Thucydides reveals the human causes of war through the outbreak of a particular war, the Peloponnesian war. The primary claim is that Thucydides intends the breakdown of the Thirty Years’ Peace between Athens and the Peloponnesians, which inaugurates the great Peloponnesian war, to be understood by grasping how the characters of the Athenian and Spartan regimes contribute to the outbreak of the war and, crucially, how Athens and Sparta differently express human nature. In broad outline, the History’s first book reveals how the regime characters of Athens and Sparta inform their respective foreign policies, but also how the interaction between the two cities—informed by the distinctive necessities pressing upon them— causes the Hellenic status quo to tremble and fall. Throughout the first book, while never obscuring the specific events triggering war, Thucydides progressively develops and expands his original statement that it was Spartan fear of Athenian power that compelled the fighting. The study argues that necessity (or compulsion) is the bright thread that Thucydides uses to guide his reader through the episodes of the first book, from the immediate causes of the Peloponnesian war to the human causes of war, from the particular events to the History’s universal themes. -

Das Chair of Supervisory Committee Dr. Ruby Blondell Classics Department Introduction This project is intended as an examination of medical language and imagery in the speeches of Demosthenes, with special attention given to his speeches against his political opponent Aeschines, Against the False Embassy (19) and On the Crown (18). In Chapter 1, I contextualize his use of such language and imagery by exploring the influence of Hippocratic medicine on fourth- and fifth-century non-medical literature. I argue that the shared anxieties of medicine and politics, namely that both arts demand quick action and foresight on the part of the good practitioner, and the rich new vocabulary of suffering and disease, made Hippocratic medicine an enticing model for the political writer, that is, the historian, philosopher, and orator. Demosthenes' medical language and imagery should thus be seen as part of a tradition of analogizing the two arts, which began during the circulation of the first Hippocratic treatises and continued well into and past his own day. PART A THE ERYSICHTHON STORY OUTSIDE KALLIMACHOS I: THE TRADITIONAL SOURCES From lines 24 to IIS of his Hymn to Demeter Kallimachos tells the story of Erysichthon, ostensibly 'so that one may avoid trans gressions' (22). The House of Triopas had not yet migrated to Knidos in Asia Minor, but lived on the Dotian plain in Thessaly. There the autochthonous Pelasgians had built a beautiful grove for Demeter; the goddess was as enamoured of it as of Eleusis, and of Triopas as much as of the nymph Enna. But an insane idea entered the head of Triopas' son, Erysichthon. With twenty young giants, his retainers, he rushed into the grove and they set about felling an enormous poplar. Demeter realized the outrage and humanely appeared to the culprit in the form of Nikippe, her aged priestess. But Erysichthon paid no attention to her restrained reproaches, and even threatened to assault the priestess. Infuriated, Demeter reassumed her divine form and towered heaven-high. Erysichthon wanted the timber to roof a banqueting hall; very well, from that day his banquets would come thick and fast. She forth with inflicted him with insatiable hunger, such that twenty waiters and twelve drink stewards could not assuage. His parents were mortified. Rather than allow him to be seen outside the palace, they invented all sorts of excuses to explain why he could not accept invitations that were offered. And all the time he ate and ate, until he was nothing but skin and bone. The whole household wept sore, Triopas tore his white hair and challenged his father Poseidon to restore the boy to health, or feed him himself. -
