PATTERNS OF SMALL MAMMAL SPECIES RICHNESS IN MEDITERRANEAN AND TEMPERATE CHILE PATRONES EN LA RIQUEZA DE ESPECIES DE PEQUEÑOS MAMÍFEROS EN LAS REGIONES MEDITERRÁNEA Y TEMPLADA DE CHILE Hernán L. Cofré, Horacio Samaniego, and Pablo A. Marquet ABSTRACT While it is widely accepted that species richness and rarity are non‑randomly distributed across time, space, and taxa, it is by no means evident which are the factors affecting the distribution paerns of both aributes. In this study we analyze richness and rarity paerns of small mammals (rodents and marsupials) in Mediterranean and Temperate Chile. We test for the effect of environmental factors that may explain richness and endemism variability aer accounting for spatial autocorrelation. We also analyze the relationship between species traits and correlates of rarity (density and range size) aer accounting for phylogenetic relatedness. Our results show that energy input and to a lesser degree glaciations may explain richness paern of small mammals from forest habitats in Chile, whereas glaciations and topographic heterogeneity are associated with endemicity paerns. Both factors may explain the high richness found at 37° S and the low values at the southernmost tip of the continent. When phylogenetic relatedness was accounted for, the number of vegetation types was the only ecological trait significantly associated with density and latitudinal range. Our results reinforce the importance of energy availability and productivity in determining paerns in biodiversity. The taxonomic status of the fossil sigmodontine rodents Akodon (Abrothrix) kermacki Reig 1978 and A. (Ab.) magnus Reig 1987 (Plio- Pleistocene, Buenos Aires Province) was revised. Based on molar morphology and other cranial traits of the type specimens, and considering the current defi nition of the Abrotrichini, we suggest that both taxa are not member of this tribe. These fossil forms are preliminarily referred to Akodontini, pending of further studies for a fi nal taxonomic identity. In addition, some biogeographical considerations about the Abrotrichini evolution based on this new taxonomic scenario are presented. Key words: Akodontini, Muroidea, fossil record, Sigmodontinae. In this study, we describe and compare the endoparasite assemblages of three native rodent species from a semiarid Mediterranean ecosystem. A total of eight species of gastrointestinal helminth parasites were detected. The endoparasitic communities of the rodentsPhyllotis darwini (5 species), Octodon degus (4 species), and Abrothrix olivaceus (3 species) were described in terms of their prevalence and mean abundance. In addition, endoparasite records by rodent species were submitted to rarefaction analyses to verify sampling robustness and used to compare richness and similarity among rodent species. O. degus presented the highest prevalence and parasitic load, but was of low diversity, while P. darwini presented the highest diversity, but had a low prevalence rate. Conversely, A. olivaceus presented the lowest prevalence and diversity. This study contributes to the existing knowledge of the endoparasitic fauna of rodent species from semiarid Mediterranean zones.
