In this research, 17 compounds comprised of twelve Published: oligostilbenoids, (-)--viniferin ,(-)-laevifonol, (-)-hopeaphenol , (-)-isohopeaphenol, vaticanol September 30, 2019 B, diptoindonesin E, hemsleyanol D, davidiol A, resveratrol, ampelopsin A, ampelopsin F, together with three other phenolic; gallic acid derivative, (-)-bergenin, scopoletin and 4- methoxygallocathecin and also two terpene; β-sitosterol and β-sitosterol glucoside have been isolated. In this study, the crude extracts and isolated compounds were evaluated regarding to their antifungal activity; in terms of MIC, MFC and germination assay against pathogenic fungi strains, namely Aspergillus flavus (AF), Aspergillus oligosporus (AO), Rhizophus oryzae (RO) and Fusarium oxysporum (FO) using Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) methods. The MIC of crude extracts and isolated compounds against all fungi ranged from 3.8 - 500 µg/mL. F. oxysporum shows the most sensitive microorganisms on crude extract: D. verrucosus, D. cornutus and isolated compound: ε-viniferin with MIC of 3.8 µg/mL. The MIC was lower compared to amphotericin B (4 µg/ml). The strain was killed at the MFC of 31.3, 31.3 and 15.6 µg/mL respectively, as compared to amphotericin B (8 µg/mL). Compounds: resveratrol, laevifonol, ε-viniferin, ampelopsin F, vaticanol B, vaticanol A, isomer of hopeaphenol and isohopeaphenol, β-sitosterol and β-sitosterolglucoside possessed an inhibitory activity on the conidial germination of F. oxysporum at the concentration of 4× MIC. On top of that, D. cornutus, ampelopsin A and hemsleyanol D possessed a complete sterility at the concentration of 2×MIC while D.verrucosus achieved its inhibitory activity at 1× MIC. To the best of our study, there is no data discussing the inhibition of conidial germination of filamentous fungi using the tested compounds and crudes tested. • Chapter 4. Synthesis of Natural Oligomeric
CHAPTER 4. SYNTHESIS OF NATURAL OLIGOMERIC STILBENOIDS AND ANALOGUES As mentioned above, stilbene oxidation was carried out with two different techniques: electrochemical oxidation reported in Chapter 3 and via various chemical oxidants in different solvents. The objectives of using these two approaches are to be able to compare their respective merits and develop a biomimetic approach that would mimic what nature does as closely as possible. A comprehensive literature review will summaries published biomimetic oligostilbenoids syntheses based on the author’s approaches as well as non-biomimetic syntheses. This is followed by the results obtained in this study and discussions on establishing the mechanisms involved in the oxidative formation of oligostilbenoids. A comparison will be made with results obtained in the preceding chapter. The structures of prepared oligostilbenoids are confirmed by spectroscopic measurements and/or by comparing with reported spectroscopic data in the literature. Finally, this chapter is completed with an overall conclusion and experimental procedures for oligostilbenoids preparation. 4.1. Oligostilbenoid biomimetic syntheses The work presented below was initiated by the various chemists for different purposes. In some cases the objective was to obtain chemical correlations in order to support proposed structures for newly isolated oligostilbenes. In other instances, metabolic biotransformation of (oligo)stilbenoid alexins by pathogens and/or oxidases was the focus of the investigations. Finally, some groups attempted the biomimetic 76 synthesis of oligostilbenoids as an obvious preparative method. Notwithstanding their objectives, biomimetic syntheses will be presented below by the type of condensing agent, i.e. biological agents (cells or enzymes) or chemical reagents, including one electron oxidants and acid catalysts.

Maintenance and conservation of Dipterocarp diversity in tropical forests _______________________________________________ Mohammad Nazrin B Abdul Malik A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Science Department of Animal and Plant Sciences November 2019 1 i Thesis abstract Many theories and hypotheses have been developed to explain the maintenance of diversity in plant communities, particularly in hyperdiverse tropical forests. Maintenance of the composition and diversity of tropical forests is vital, especially species of high commercial value. I focus on the high value dipterocarp timber species of Malaysia and Borneo as these have been extensive logged owing to increased demands from global timber trade. In this thesis, I explore the drivers of diversity of this group, as well as the determinants of global abundance, conservation and timber value. The most widely supported hypothesis for explaining tropical diversity is the Janzen Connell hypothesis. I experimentally tested the key elements of this, namely density and distance dependence, in two dipterocarp species. The results showed that different species exhibited different density and distance dependence effects. To further test the strength of this hypothesis, I conducted a meta-analysis combining multiple studies across tropical and temperate study sites, and with many species tested. It revealed significant support for the Janzen- Connell predictions in terms of distance and density dependence. Using a phylogenetic comparative approach, I highlight how environmental adaptation affects dipterocarp distribution, and the relationships of plant traits with ecological factors and conservation status. This analysis showed that environmental and ecological factors are related to plant traits and highlights the need for dipterocarp conservation priorities.

Their structures and stereochemistry were determined by spectroscopic methods, which included the extensive use of 2D NMR techniques. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (RSA) and the β-carotene-linoleic acid (BCLA) assays, and compared with those of the standards of ascorbic acid (AscA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT).

Phenylpropanoids (PPs) belong to the largest group of secondary metabolites produced by plants, mainly, in response to biotic or abiotic stresses such as infections, wounding, UV irradiation, exposure to ozone, pollutants, and other hostile environmental conditions. It is thought that the molecular basis for the protective action of phenylpropanoids in plants is their antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties. Wine is one of the main sources of stilbenes in diet. Very Stilbene few studies have dealt with a detailed quantitative analysis of stilbenes in wine. Most methodologies reported Viniferin until now have been restricted to the analysis of few stilbenes such as resveratrol and piceid. In this study, a Wine method for the quantification of wine stilbenes has been developed and validated. The method was simple, fast Mass spectrometry and sensitive with LOD between 4 and 28 μg/L. Matrix effects were assessed, and the methodology was validated in terms of precision, accuracy, linearity and repetitiveness. The method was able to quantify, in less than 5 min, fifteen targeted stilbenes in wines including seven monomers, three dimers, one trimer, and four tetramers. The methodology was applied to white and red wines. E-piceid was the main stilbene in white wine (mean 155 μg/L).
