Social Ethics Society Journal of Applied Philosophy Special Issue, December 2018, pp. 181-206 The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) and ABS-CBN through the Prisms of Herman and Chomsky’s “Propaganda Model”: Duterte’s Tirade against the Media and vice versa Menelito P. Mansueto Colegio de San Juan de Letran [email protected] Jeresa May C. Ochave Ateneo de Davao University [email protected] Abstract This paper is an attempt to localize Herman and Chomsky’s analysis of the commercial media and use this concept to fit in the Philippine media climate. Through the propaganda model, they introduced the five interrelated media filters which made possible the “manufacture of consent.” By consent, Herman and Chomsky meant that the mass communication media can be a powerful tool to manufacture ideology and to influence a wider public to believe in a capitalistic propaganda. Thus, they call their theory the “propaganda model” referring to the capitalist media structure and its underlying political function. Herman and Chomsky’s analysis has been centered upon the US media, however, they also believed that the model is also true in other parts of the world as the media conglomeration is also found all around the globe. In the Philippines, media conglomeration is not an alien concept especially in the presence of a giant media outlet, such as, ABS-CBN. In this essay, the authors claim that the propaganda model is also observed even in the less obvious corporate media in the country, disguised as an independent media entity but like a chameleon, it © 2018 Menelito P.

  • Kris Aquino and The/As a Philippine Horror Genre Louie Jon A
Kris Aquino and the/as a Philippine Horror Genre Louie Jon A. Sanchez Ana Felisa E. Lorenzo & John Andrew Del Prado (Translators) This paper discusses Kris Aquino as text vis-à-vis as a unique horror genre, within the context of her title as the “Philippine Box Office Horror Queen.” While foregrounding comprehensive arguments about Aquino’s textuality, the essay also reveals her cinematic history, which has crowned Aquino as the queen of the genre, which the author calls, pelikula ng lagim [translation]. This cinematic history is used as a narrative guide in constructing an in-depth scrutiny on the concepts of genre, lagim, and the pelikula ng lagim. The author strategically plays with these concepts, thus heightening their meaning, while revealing the rich, covert discourse of Aquino as a genre that has launched itself as “a culture of kasarian” [literally, gender, but by way of a Filipino root word, sari, variety, or more appropriately, polysemy], highlighted in the two franchise Feng Shui movies (Roño, 2004, 2014), where she played the heroine. While these movies may be said to have placed the Philippines into the realm of Asian Horror Films, they also present Aquino as a text that is “becoming a complete genre.” Keywords: Kris Aquino, tekstuwalidad, pelikula ng lagim, genre, Feng Shui A generic look at Kris Aquino This essay may begin by setting its key words. First, genre. On one hand, its definition is no secret, although there are new ways of looking at this word, which is closely linked to writing, even the “writing” created through the practice of reading.

Tubeza SHE has forgiven her former employer but justice should take its course. Indonesian domestic worker Erwiana Sulistyaningsih said her former employer should receive “the maximum sentence” after the District Court found her guilty in a case that sparked international outrage. Speaking to reporters after the court verdict came out on February 10, Erwiana said Law Wan-tung, 45 and a mother of two, should be jailed for life after she was convicted in 18 out of 20 charges which included assault, criminal intimidation, and failure to pay Erwiana’s salary and to allow her holidays. “As a human being, I could forgive her and her family but since Hong Kong has a justice system, justice must be upheld. I hope Law Wan-tung will receive the max- imum sentence; even though for me, that is still not enough compared to what she did to me and the other victims,” Erwiana said. “For me personally, she should receive life imprisonment for what she did, and for the fact that she does not have any remorse for her past actions while also teaching her children to lie for her,” she said.
