CASIO to Release 35Th Anniversary NIGO®×K.IBE G-SHOCK Collection
CASIO to Release 35th Anniversary NIGO®×K.IBE G-SHOCK Collection Special Models Designed in Collaboration between Fashion Designer NIGO® and G-SHOCK Inventor Kikuo Ibe DW-5635-9 DW-6935-4 Norderstedt, January 10, 2018 — Casio Computer Co., Ltd. will mark the 35th anniversary of its G-SHOCK brand of shock-resistant watches in April 2018. As part of its celebration of this milestone, CASIO announced today the release of two special models developed in collaboration between the leading Japanese fashion designer and creative director, NIGO®, and the G-SHOCK inventor, Kikuo Ibe. A special edition of 35 watches of each model will be sold worldwide. The new models are based on the DW-5600, in a nod to the heritage of the first G-SHOCK ever, and the DW-6900, which is the basis for many G-SHOCK collaboration models and a model NIGO® feels a personal connection with. To realize the two collaborators’ aspiration to bring an unprecedented expression to the design, the watches use vividly colored, translucent, fluorescent plastics. The fluorescent paint is coated with two layers of plastic and further coated throughout with a UV-resistant clear paint after molding. The process protects against discoloring and this is the first time for this technology to be featured in any G-SHOCK watch. The collaboration models employ special design features including a message from the collaborators inscribed on the back case: “35th Anniversary Model Thank you from NIGO & K.IBE.” Model Color MSRP No. of Watches Released DW-5635-9 Yellow US$135 35 DW-6935-4 Pink US$135 35 The special models will be sold in a raffle among hopefuls who pre-register at a special website. -

Jeffrey Angles Dissertation
WRITING THE LOVE OF BOYS: REPRESENTATIONS OF MALE-MALE DESIRE IN THE LITERATURE OF MURAYAMA KAITA AND EDOGAWA RANPO DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jeffrey M. Angles, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor William J. Tyler, Adviser Professor Richard Torrance ______________________________ Professor Naomi Fukumori Adviser Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures Copyright by Jeffrey Angles 2004 ABSTRACT During the twenty-five years between the beginning of the Taishō period in 1912 and the Japanese invasion of China in 1937, the spread of medical psychology and sexological discourse helped contribute to the development of new ideas about masculinity and gender in Japan. Popular literature represented one forum in which people explored, promoted, and qualified these new ideas. The manifestations of male-male desire that one finds in the literature of the period, however, do not just passively reflect changes in contemporary ideology. Literary developments also helped shape the idioms that writers used to describe the subject. This dissertation examines the representations of male-male desire in the bestselling works of two authors active during this window of change: the poet, writer, and painter Murayama Kaita (1896-1919) and the mystery author Edogawa Ranpo (1894-1965). Through critical analysis and original translations of their works, this dissertation shows that their depictions of desire between men were shaped not only by changing ideas about gender relations but also the artistic movements and genres with which both authors were associated. -

Japanese Artists in the United States, 1895-1955
Art across Borders: Japanese Artists in the United States, 1895-1955 Ramona Handel-Bajema Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree for Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 ©2012 Ramona Bajema All Rights Reserved Ramona Handel-Bajema ABSTRACT Art across Borders: Japanese Artists in the United States, 1895-1955 From the 1880s to the early 1920s, hundreds of artists left Japan for the United States. The length of their stays varied from several months to several decades. Some had studied art in Tokyo, but others became interested in art after working in California. Some became successful in the American art world, some in the Japanese art world, and some in both. They used oil paints on canvas, sumi ink on silk, and Leica cameras. They created images of Buddhist deities, labor protests, farmers harvesting rice, cabaret dancers, and the K.K.K. They saw themselves and were seen by others as Japanese nationals, but whether what they created should be called Japanese art proved a difficult and personal question. The case of Japanese artists in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century demonstrates that there is a national art – a Japanese art and an American art – but that the category is not fixed. A painting can be classified in the 1910s as Japanese, but the same painting can be included in a show of American art a few decades later. An artist can proclaim himself to be American, but can then be exhibited as a Japanese artist after his death. -
