CASIO to Release 35Th Anniversary NIGO®×K.IBE G-SHOCK Collection CASIO to Release 35th Anniversary NIGO®×K.IBE G-SHOCK Collection Special Models Designed in Collaboration between Fashion Designer NIGO® and G-SHOCK Inventor Kikuo Ibe DW-5635-9 DW-6935-4 Norderstedt, January 10, 2018 — Casio Computer Co., Ltd. will mark the 35th anniversary of its G-SHOCK brand of shock-resistant watches in April 2018. As part of its celebration of this milestone, CASIO announced today the release of two special models developed in collaboration between the leading Japanese fashion designer and creative director, NIGO®, and the G-SHOCK inventor, Kikuo Ibe. A special edition of 35 watches of each model will be sold worldwide. The new models are based on the DW-5600, in a nod to the heritage of the first G-SHOCK ever, and the DW-6900, which is the basis for many G-SHOCK collaboration models and a model NIGO® feels a personal connection with. To realize the two collaborators’ aspiration to bring an unprecedented expression to the design, the watches use vividly colored, translucent, fluorescent plastics. The fluorescent paint is coated with two layers of plastic and further coated throughout with a UV-resistant clear paint after molding. The process protects against discoloring and this is the first time for this technology to be featured in any G-SHOCK watch. The collaboration models employ special design features including a message from the collaborators inscribed on the back case: “35th Anniversary Model Thank you from NIGO & K.IBE.” Model Color MSRP No. of Watches Released DW-5635-9 Yellow US$135 35 DW-6935-4 Pink US$135 35 The special models will be sold in a raffle among hopefuls who pre-register at a special website. Those who pre-register may also enter themselves for a chance to be selected as the one lucky person to receive their watch directly from Kikuo Ibe, wherever they are in the world. How to Order Pre-register at the special website. If you are selected in the raffle, you will receive an email. For details about pre-registering, please visit the following website. Website: world.g-shock.com/35th Pre-registration Period: From 3:00 am, February 1, 2018 to 14:59 pm, March 5, 2018, Coordinated Universal Time Raffle: March 2018 (tentative date) 1 DW-5635-9 DW-6935-4 Case back engraving About NIGO® NIGO® first took the world by storm with his own fashion brand in the 1990s, which catapulted him into a position as a street culture pioneer. NIGO® made a clean break from the brand in 2011, and has since branched out into various fields. In addition to producing designs for his own brand, HUMAN MADE®, he has served as creative director for a number of projects with global companies including Uniqlo’s UT Collection, iQOS by Philip Morris, YOHO! (China’s leading youth culture magazine), and a collaborative label with CyberAgent, an Internet TV and ad company. At the same time, NIGO® continues to wield considerable influence in the music world; the artists, sounds, and visuals he has produced have received numerous awards. The multitalented NIGO®’s reach extends beyond fashion, including being a producer and DJ for the hip hop group HONEST BOYZ®, designing album artwork and merchandise for the girl group Happiness, producing a collaborative event with the SEVEN label directed by NAOTO of Sandaime J Soul Brothers from EXILE TRIBE, and producing the Curry Up restaurant. About Kikuo Ibe Born in 1952, Kikuo Ibe earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Faculty of Science and Technology of Sophia University in 1976, before joining CASIO. Initially assigned to the Design Department, Ibe was involved in digital watch construction development. In 1981, he proposed a rugged watch that would not break even if dropped and began developing a shock-resistant construction. After two years of hard work, the first G-SHOCK was released. Ibe later oversaw product planning for the MR-G series of G-SHOCK watches with a metal exterior and the OCEANUS line of full metal watches equipped with radio-controlled, solar-powered systems. While continuing to be active in watch development, Ibe also participates in G-SHOCK events around the world as the father of G-SHOCK, working to expand the global reach of the brand. 2 Specifications DW-5635-9 Construction Shock-resistant Water Resistance 200 meters 1/100 second; measuring capacity: 00’00”00~59’59”99 (for the first 60 minutes), 1:00’00~23:59’59 (after 60 minutes); measuring unit: Stopwatch 1/100 seconds (for the first 60 minutes), 1 second (after 60 minutes); measuring modes: elapsed time, split time, 1st and 2nd place times Measuring unit: 1 second; countdown range: 24 hours; countdown Countdown Timer start time setting range: 1 second to 24 hours (1-second increments, 1-minute increments, and 1-hour increments); other: auto-repeat Alarm Multi-function alarm; hourly time signal Full auto-calendar (to year 2099); 12/24-hour format; EL backlight with Other Functions afterglow; flash alert: flashes with buzzer that sounds for alarms, hourly time signals Accuracy at Normal ±15 seconds per month Temperature Battery Life 2 years on CR2016 Size of Case 48.9×42.8×13.4 mm Total Weight Approx. 53g DW-6935-4 Construction Shock-resistant Water Resistance 200 meters 1/100 second; measuring capacity: 00’00”00~59’59”99 (for the first 60 minutes), 1:00’00~23:59’59 (after 60 minutes); measuring unit: Stopwatch 1/100 seconds (for the first 60 minutes), 1 second (after 60 minutes); measuring modes: elapsed time, split time, 1st and 2nd place times Measuring unit: 1 second; countdown range: 24 hours; countdown Countdown Timer start time setting range: 1 second to 24 hours (1-second increments, 1-minute increments, and 1-hour increments); other: auto-repeat Alarm Multi-function alarm; hourly time signal Full auto-calendar (to year 2099); 12/24-hour format; EL backlight with Other Functions afterglow; flash alert: flashes with buzzer that sounds for alarms, hourly time signals Accuracy at Normal ±15 seconds per month Temperature Battery Life 2 years on CR2016 Size of Case 53.2×50.0×16.3 mm Total Weight Approx. 66g 3 .

It offers abundant possibilities to tell stories, address themes in a nuanced, durational manner, create carefully art-directed universes, and reach audiences much larger and more diverse than those at any gallery or museum. So for Takashi Murakami, an artist known for his ambitious multimedia practice, international scope, and brand-name recognition, feature film was inevitable. Since the 1990s, his work has grown to encompass a staggering range of media—from large-scale painting and sculpture to Louis Vuitton bags—taking on the vast subject of the Japanese pop psyche on a global stage. It’s clear why an artist of Murakami’s stature would attempt the medium of film, but there was no guarantee that his gallery reputation would translate to success in cinema. The scale of a film requires a collaborative component—the cast and crew—that doesn’t jibe with the traditional idea of the artist alone in the studio creating a thoughtful masterpiece.

This series aims to further our understanding of the origins, dealings, decisions, and outcomes of social movements by fostering dialogue among many traditions of thought, across European nations and across continents. All theoretical perspectives are welcome. Books in the series typically combine theory with empirical research, dealing with various types of mobilization, from neighborhood groups to revolutions. We especially welcome work that synthesizes or compares different approaches to social movements, such as cultural and structural traditions, micro- and macro-social, economic and ideal, or qualitative and quantitative. Books in the series will be published in English. One goal is to encourage non- native speakers to introduce their work to Anglophone audiences. Another is to maximize accessibility: all books will be available in open access within a year after printed publication. Series Editors Jan Willem Duyvendak is professor of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. James M. Jasper teaches at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. • Exploring the Cultural Phenomenon of Language in Japanese Band Names
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE 135 Hey! Say! JUMP: Exploring the cultural phenomenon of Language in Japanese band names Lee, Jackson Koon Yat & A.R.Woollock Abstract In Japan, English-language usage in the public sphere, from advertising through popular music, general media, and signage runs a gamut of uses and accuracies from the intentional and unintentional misuse, to the irreverent and the occasional sublime. This paper sets out to explore and record the use of English in the naming of Japanese pop and rock groups. The central thesis of this essay being that Japanese pop and rock group names fall into five distinct categories or phenomena: meaningless names using language other than Japanese, arbitrary names from second languages, bastardised 'other' language derivatives, Romanised Japanese, and mixed Japanese and other language. This grouping ignores those names rendered in kan-ji, which although acknowledged, are not specifically within the scope of this research. By deconstructing and analysing this use, it is hoped to contribute to discourse in the fields of both culture (cultural appropriation), and language (language use and accuracy). Keywords Japanese popular music, Japan, English Language, Wa-sei ei-go, Japanese culture [email protected] 136 Lee, Jackson Koon Yat & A.R.Woollock Introduction Glancing through the racks in your local Japanese music shop or rental store, the native speaker of English will be greeted with an array of Japanese band names which span the spectrum of use and comprehension from the expected and the mundane, through to the questionable and the incomprehensible.

  • Chapter 3 Chapter 3
CHAPTER 3 3 CHAPTER LISTENING TO NOISE IN KANSAI It was late, and we were wandering up a side alley away from the light and clamor of the main market road that leads away from the station. I was woozy after several drinks of strong Okinawan liquor that Tabata Mitsuru and I had been drinking at an uchiage, a collective gathering of musicians after a performance. “I’m going to miss the last train,” I complained, as we headed farther into the darkness, away from the rumble of the trains. “Don’t worry about it,” mumbled Tabata, pointing to a tall hedge that ran along the wall of a nearby house, “I’ve slept back there a couple times when I missed the train . besides, we’re almost there, and we can hang out and listen all night. Unless it’s closed . .” We stopped before the door of what looked like an abandoned storefront, its large window completely pasted over with record album jackets, their images so faded that only blurs of blue ink remained. Some peeled of the wall in shreds, like remnants of old posters from some long-past political campaign. Te door, too, shed bits of old magazine pages as we swung it open to step inside. As my eyes ad- justed to the darkness, I could see that the interior walls and ceiling were the same, covered with faded images and torn posters behind shelves clut- tered with junk and bottles of Jinro shôchû, a Korean rice whiskey, marked with the names of the regulars by whom they were claimed.
