s a 5-year-old child growing up in Budapest, Hungary, Attila Sávolt remembers accompanying his older brother to the sports club. He watched the older kids A play tennis as he picked up balls, trying to stay busy until he reached the required age of seven so that he could finally take up his favorite sport. From the moment he picked up a racket, he loved being on a tennis court or hitting balls against the wall. As he began to excel at the sport, the hard work, competition, the game itself, and traveling around the world were the motivating factors that fueled his love for the game. He considers his backhand to be his best shot. He speaks Hungarian, German, and English. Sávolt now lives in Sarasota and has a successful private lesson coaching career. When he returns to Hungary to visit, he occasionally acts as a sports commentator on Sports 1. He and his wife Sylvia have two sons, 15 and 7 years old. Here’s what else we learned: Who were your idols growing up? What player do you think most revolutionized the game? Stefan Edberg was my big idol. My room was full of his posters. Every era had its players that revolutionized the game (Borg, McEnroe, Lendl, Sampras, Agassi), but the big four today are Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray who have taken tennis to a new level. Open stance is an advanced footwork which should be developed as the player advances. I hate to see coaches teach the open stance from the start just because that is the modern thing to do, or trying to teach the forehand like Nadal’s buggy whipping forehand to young kids. The grip is another important issue. Don’t let young kids develop a full Western grip. That is a suicide in tennis and I see so many do it and suffer from it later.

Who was your toughest tennis competitor? I lost 3 times in 3 sets against Fernando Meligeni, a very tough fighter, lefty player from Brazil. I didn’t like to play against heavy topspin hit- ter lefty players, so playing Nadal on clay these days would be the toughest for me. What else should we know about you? I’m a food fanatic and take my diet very seriously. This is something I would have done differently when I played. I believe now that food is the main fuel for people as gas is for cars, and athletes are like race cars. Many people don’t pay attention to their diet, especially here in the U.S. I have a Bachelor’s Degree at the Faculty of Physical Educa- tion and Sport Sciences from the University of Sport Management in Hungary where I majored in Nutrition and Sport Psychology. I’m also a dog fanatic. My wife and I used to breed German Boxers back in Hun- gary. We went to dog shows all over Europe with our world champion dogs and sometimes we had more than 20 dogs living at our house. We miss them a lot. What is your best tennis advice as a coach? You have to learn to be humble and patient. Without humility it is not possible to become a good player, as it is not possible to endure the anxiety and suffering of a difficult match. Patience is key to long term success. That is what I look for in a player over and above talent.

12 December 2012 Totally Tennis CHRONIC INJURIES: PREVENTION, NOT CARE ow popular is the game of tennis? In the United States alone there are over 15 million active tennis players. While the popularity of the game is evi- Hdent, the possibility of an injury is not something many players think about. Tennis is a demanding sport for the body, and one that requires sudden stops and turns at exceptional speeds. The toll on the body’s joints and structural integrity is tremendous. A recent study suggested that elite male tennis players suffered 2.3 injuries per player per 1,000 playing hours. The usual course for those suffering from tennis injuries is to seek treatment so that they can return to the courts. Yet, while treatment is important, the mindset of just treating the injury is disadvantageous to the tennis player. Educating the athlete on how to maintain his injury makes more sense, especially if the athlete wishes to keep playing tennis. Elbow epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, for example, is a common injury. Once treated, one can usually return to activities after a short downtime, depending on how severe the injury was. That player, however, will continue to have recurrence of that injury if she is not shown how to maintain it. Like all of the professional tennis athletes on the circuit today, a specific program that en- courages shoulder, elbow, and lower extremity strength should be implemented throughout the tennis season. Proper strength, flexibility, and good movement postures all help prevent further injuries and increase sport performance. This is especially true with the older athlete who wants to compete; injuries take longer to heal but can be avoided with the proper protocol. Short, specific, and isolated exercises are all that is required for a long and satisfying tennis life. Timothy Agnew, kinesiologist, has a private practice in Sarasota. 16 December 2012 Totally Tennis Forest Hills Back in the Day… By Steve Parker t was a cool early September Saturday in 1953. I was 13 years old. Like hundreds of other tennis fans, my dad and mom packed the car, and off our family of four went, from Longmeadow, MA to I Forest Hills, NY. Forest Hills – the name itself was nearly as famous as Wimbledon. It would never change; the ivy colored walls were the sacred temple of U.S. tennis. One didn’t even say, the U.S. Championships. Forest Hills Vic Seixas was enough. When we got to Jewel Avenue, my heart started to pound. We then circled around the secluded Forest Hills community searching for a driveway to park the car. Big business at the championships was the driveway parking busi- ness. Young boys beckoned us to “a deal.” It was the semifinals. We did not have tickets in advance. There was no Tony Trabert need. Good tickets could be bought at the box office. Stand in line for a couple of minutes and in we went, good seats available at the semifinals of a grand slam tournament. The featured match was a Tony Trabert vs. Ken Rosewall af- fair. It was a good year for teenager Ken; he won the French and Australian that year. Tony was the more mature darling of American tennis. Two years later he would win three of the four Grand Slams. Tony prevailed that afternoon. Ken was only eighteen at the time, and yet he was well known. He and Lew Hoad were named the “Whiz Kids” a year earlier. They were only seventeen, November babies, born just three weeks apart. Blond and strapping, Hoad was a cover magazine’s delight. He was powerful and set to take over Australian and world tennis. Rosewall, later nicknamed “Muscles” was better than anyone Pancho Gonzales suspected and lasted and lasted. He possessed the quintessential backhand and defined for a generation of young players, the penetrating slice with pace that became simply known as the Rosewall backhand. The two represented the new Australian wave, the Harry Hopman kids and would continue the Aussie dynasty. The great Frank Sedgman, best “amateur” in the world had joined the Kramer tour. Kramer, the author of the big game,

It was the new way to make a living in tennis. Only the top five or six could make enough to live on, but it was the beginning. Each year a new amateur phenom would join the tour, leaving the grand slams and other famous tournaments, and try to earn an honest buck. Their entrance into the pro ranks was a series of matches against the indomi- table Pancho Gonzales. Who was really number one? Meanwhile the amateurs continued. Emerson, Rosewall, Hoad, Trabert Lew Hoad and Seixas continued to rack up grand slams. Poor Pancho – was cut out of all those possible Grand Slam wins. When he finally did come back in 1969, he Rod Laver met Charlie Pasarell, America’s new number one amateur at Wimbledon. The 41-year-old Pancho prevailed over two days, 22-24, 1-6, 16-14, 6-3, 11-9, a 112 game thriller. Pancho overcame seven match points against Charlie to beat his young rival who was also his student. What might Pancho have done in an open era between 1952-1968? His single match longevity record would still stand were it not for that little hit-around by Isner and Mahut. And then there was a new guy named Laver with Popeye’s left bicep. He was strong enough to hit the topspin backhand with one hand. Hardly anyone else could do it successfully. I remember being told not to try it or teach it because you had to be Popeye to do it. But, Laver did and the world begrudg- ingly changed. The slice became defensive and the era of the one and two handed backhand topspin began. And so it goes . . . and that’s how I remember it, back in the day.

While he now plays out of Mis- sion Valley CC, he still is in the League. In fact, he played in the first match of the 2012-13 season on November 1 vs. the Wal- ton team from Bradenton. Born in December, 1922, Jim played social tennis in his home state of Massachusetts until retiring in 1982 and moving to Waterford CC in Venice, FL. He joined Courtside Tennis Club and was on hand to be on their first SCSMTL team. Mis- sion Valley has only one team in the League and Jim has been on their 60’s team roster since 2006. It is not uncommon for hips and knees to need man-made parts as a tennis player gets older, but Jim is proud that he plays with his original parts. While a steady player, he admits to always being a court three player. His daughter, however, was a ranked USTA player in Massachusetts while in school.
