Session 2, 17h00 PETE LOCKETT (Angleterre) PETE LOCKETT, percussions Né à Portsmouth dans le sud de l'Angleterre, Pete Lockett y fait ses premiers pas dans la musique en jouant d’abord de la batterie. A 21 ans il s’installe à Londres. C'est là-bas qu'a lieu sa reconversion dans les percussions et qu'une réelle passion naît pour les tablas, qu'il considère comme étant le summum en matière de rythme linéaire. Pete est internationalement reconnu pour ses talents incontestables. Il est l'un des percussionnistes les plus polyvalents au monde. Il a été élu Meilleur percussionniste en 2005 par le Rhythm Magazine et le site international de batterie, www.mikedolbear.com. Il joue toutes les percussions, qu’elles viennent du Nord comme du Sud de l’Inde (tabla, mridangam, kanjira, ghatam, etc.) du Moyen-Orient (darbouka, req, bendir, etc.) ou encore du Brésil, de Cuba, d’Irlande, d’Afrique de l'Ouest, et tant d’autres encore ! Son implication lui a valu de nombreuses collaborations avec des artistes provenant d'horizons musicaux différents, tels que Björk, Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant, ou Jeff Beck, qui reflètent la diversité de son jeu. Ce passionné a sorti 5 albums et mis ses talents au service de l'industrie cinématographique (B.O. de Quantum of Solace, L'Incroyable Hulk 2, Casino Royal, etc). Pete Lockett partage également son savoir avec la sortie de méthodes, de livres et de DVD comme Indian Rhythms for Drummers, dans lequel il adapte des grooves issus de la musique Indienne à la batterie. Pete Lockett explorera sur scène les percussions des quatre coins du monde, et devrait entraîner le public du Drums Addict Festival dans un tourbillon rythmique mémorable, avant de faire un court set avec Damien Schmitt. www.petelockett.com www.myspace.com/petelockett Drums Addict Festival 2010 23 Session 2, 17h00 DAMIEN SCHMITT (France / Etats-Unis) DAMIEN SCHMITT, batterie/chant Né de parents musiciens, Damien Schmitt commence la batterie dès son plus jeune âge. Il suit ensuite un cursus scolaire à l'école de musique de Saint-Nazaire, sa ville natale. Il joue dès 4 ans dans les bals avec l'orchestre de ses parents, et affine ses connaissances en grandissant au sein de différents groupes. Photo : Frédéric Ruault Il joue du funk, du hip hop, en passant par le metal, le jazz (en trio, quartet, et big band), le jazz fusion, et même les percussions brésiliennes au sein d'une batucada. Il monte ensuite son groupe où il compose et écrit les textes et fait ainsi la finale du Printemps de Bourges en 2000. Après avoir vendu quelques milliers de disque en auto production, il décide de s'installer à Paris. Il commence alors le métier en accompagnant Yannick Noah ou encore Khaled, Gage, Georges Alain Jones, Emma Daumas, Zap Mama, les Nubians, etc., mais conserve un intérêt certain pour le jazz fusion et la musique électronique. Damien joue alors avec Dominique Di Piazza, Jean-Marie Ecay, Hadrien Féraud, remplace Paco Sery dans Sixun, et enregistre avec Jannick Top, Eric Lelann, Lionel Louéké, Bireli Lagrène, Les Frères Raymond, Clara Ponty, etc. Il part ensuite à Los Angeles et débute des collaborations avec Jean-Luc Ponty, Alain Caron, Franck Gambale. En 2008, Damien joue au V-Drumcontest, puis en 2009 au Drum Fest de Montréal et au Namm Show au sein du V-Trio avec Franck Gambale et Alain Caron. Ses prestations sur la batterie Roland TD-20 - qu'il considère comme un instrument à part entière grâce à tous les sons qu’elle propose (marimba, nappes de synthé, basse, etc.) - sont étonnantes de créativité. Fidèle au Drums Addict Festival (qui l’a accueilli en 2007, 2008 et 2009), il est depuis cette année le Parrain du Festival (avec Jean-Philippe Fanfant). Damien Schmitt est un artiste complet doté d’une technique et d’une musicalité époustouflantes. Après un set avec Pete Lockett, il fera une prestation solo de batterie et chant à couper le souffle ! www.myspace.com/schmittdamien Drums Addict Festival 2010 24 Session 3, 20h30 (1ère partie par le Gagnant du Concours Drums Addict Festival) ERIC MOORE II (Etats-Unis) + Hadrien Féraud, Michael Lecoq & Renaud Gensane ERIC MOORE II, batterie Eric Moore II est né à Stockton, Californie. Issu d’une famille de musiciens, il tape sur tout ce qu’il trouve dès l’âge de 2 ans. En remportant le Guitar Center Drum Off en 2004, il devient le Meilleur Batteur des Etats- Unis. Eric Moore est dès lors repéré par les plus grands fabricants de baguettes, batteries et cymbales. En seulement quelques années, il joue avec des artistes légendaires tels que Sly and the Family Stone, Bobby Brown, El Debarge, Kirk Franklin, Mario, Bel Biv Devo, et Infectious Grooves. Après une apparition à l’émission « Making his Band » sur MTV avec P. Diddy, il est contacté par le groupe trash/punk Suicidal Tendencies qui lui offre un job à temps plein pour un enregistrement et une tournée de 3 mois en 2008. Eric saute sur l’occasion, et enchaîne les interviews. Un des temps fort de la carrière d’Eric fut sa performance en 2008 au NAMM show à Sao Paulo, au Brésil, devant 800 fans éberlués par son jeu rapide, puissant, funky et tout en finesse, et la magie de ses jongles de baguettes. La prestation d’Eric Moore au DAF promet d’être inoubliable ! www.myspace.com/ericmooreii Drums Addict Festival 2010 25 HADRIEN FÉRAUD, basse Né en 1984 dans une famille de musiciens, Hadrien Féraud est très vite immergé dans un milieu musical très varié : rock, rhytm and blues, pop, jazz, etc. A l'âge de 8 ans, son père l'initie à la guitare, mais la batterie et la basse suscitent en lui d'avantage de curiosité. C'est en écoutant Jaco Pastorius, le fameux bassiste américain de jazz (et notamment de Weather Report) qu'il a une révélation pour la basse. En 2001, à 16 ans, Hadrien est invité par Christian Pegand (manager de John McLaughlin et Bireli Lagrène) à participer à Basse contre Basse, un concert organisé par la Sacem à la mémoire de Jenny Clark, dans lequel sont invités les plus grands bassistes français. Hadrien fera une prestation remarquée, entouré de Bireli Lagrène et de Sylvain Luc aux guitares et de Franck Aghulon à la batterie. Photo : JB Millot Par le biais de Bireli Lagrène, Hadrien fait la connaissance en 2002 des deux frères Jim et Jon Grandcamp, guitariste et batteur avec qui il forme le trio Le cartel et part se produire sur différentes scènes en France et à l'étranger. En 2004, il obtient le 1er prix du concours national français Haut les Basses. Hadrien multiplie alors les expériences musicales en accompagnant Jean Marie Ecay, Nguyen Lê, Rido Bayonne, Cheik Tidiane Sekh, Marc Berthoumieux, et fait de nombreux « jams » dans des clubs réputés. John McLaughlin l’invite à jouer sur son album Industrial Zen, et Hadrien part en tournée avec lui en 2007. L’album éponyme d’Hadrien sort en avril de la même année, c’est un succès. Chick Corea l'invite en Floride et ils enregistrent un album en trio avec Richie Barshay, From Brooklyn to Clearwater. John McLaughlin forme le groupe 4th Dimension avec Marc Mondesir (batterie), Gary Husband (claviers, batterie) et Hadrien à la basse. Ils partent pour une tournée aux Etats-Unis et au Canada, et en tirent un album : Pirate Bootleg. En 2008, Hadrien est à nouveau invité par John McLaughlin pour enregistrer Floating Point, album de fusion avec la crème des jeunes musiciens indiens. Puis Biréli Lagrène lui confie les arrangements et enregistrement de son album Electric Side (avec Damien Schmitt à la batterie !). Hadrien continue depuis une carrière internationale brillante. Selon John McLaughlin, il est tout simplement le nouveau Jaco Pastorius ! Hadrien accompagnera Eric Moore sur la scène du DAF avec deux membres de son groupe (Michal Lecoq et Renaud Gensane). Issu d'une famille de musiciens, il a commencé la musique par l'accordéon, à l’âge de 8 ans. Il s'est ensuite consacré au piano, et a obtenu un 1er prix de conservatoire. Il a étudié trois ans à la Bill Evans Piano Académie avec Bernard Maury. A cette époque, il a joué avec des photo : Allison Maarek musiciens tels que Pierrick Pedron, David Sauzay, Fabien Mary, etc. Ses expériences se sont enrichies à travers les différents groupes dans lesquels il a joué : Bireli Lagrène Electrik avec Bireli Lagrène (guitare), Hadrien Feraud (basse), Damien Schmitt (batterie), Yacine (DJ) ; Hadrien Feraud & Rumeurs avec Hadrien Feraud (basse), Damien Schmitt (batterie), Jim Gracamp (guitare), ou encore Mokthar Samba Group, aux côtés de Mokthar Samba (batterie), Kevin Reveyrand (basse), Laurent Bonnet (saxophone) et Jeff Kellner (guitare). www.myspace.com/michaellecoq RENAUD GENSANE, trompette Né à Antanananarivo (Madagascar) en 1988, Renaud Gensane fait ses débuts dans la musique à l'école de musique de Thuir où il étudie la batterie et la flûte à bec. Il entre ensuite au CNR de Perpignan et s’intéresse alors à la trompette, la batterie, la percussion classique et au jazz. Il obtient en 2006 un D.E.M de Jazz, une médaille d'or de batterie et un fin d'étude de trompette. Renaud Gensane ne cesse d’enrichir ses expériences au sein de diverses formations jazz notamment avec Stephane Kochoyan Group, Harold Lopez Nussa Trio, Triphase, François Constantin Group, Grégory Privat Group, ou encore avec le groupe de ska reggae 100 grammes de têtes.

    ABSTRACT Title: FRENCH STEWARDSHIP OF JAZZ: THE CASE OF FRANCE MUSIQUE AND FRANCE CULTURE Roscoe Seldon Suddarth, Master of Arts, 2008 Directed By: Richard G. King, Associate Professor, Musicology, School of Music The French treat jazz as “high art,” as their state radio stations France Musique and France Culture demonstrate. Jazz came to France in World War I with the US army, and became fashionable in the 1920s—treated as exotic African- American folklore. However, when France developed its own jazz players, notably Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, jazz became accepted as a universal art. Two well-born Frenchmen, Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay, embraced jazz and propagated it through the Hot Club de France. After World War II, several highly educated commentators insured that jazz was taken seriously. French radio jazz gradually acquired the support of the French government. This thesis describes the major jazz programs of France Musique and France Culture, particularly the daily programs of Alain Gerber and Arnaud Merlin, and demonstrates how these programs display connoisseurship, erudition, thoroughness, critical insight, and dedication. France takes its “stewardship” of jazz seriously. As the final preparations are being made for our annual AAA Festival, we remind you to make plans to attend this exciting event to be held in Alexan- dria, VA, featuring renowned American and International guests, a competition held in honor of the late Faithe Deffner with an unprecedented cash prize of- fering, workshops, concerts, a Festival Orchestra and numerous social events. We invite and encourage you to submit your news items for publication in the future issues of this Newsletter. Our membership is involved in a variety of activities, and we know our readers would love to hear about these things. At any one moment, our members are performing on Broadway, at the White House, in concert both here and abroad, producing fesitvals, undertaking various International projects, working on commissions and many other accordion happenings. We thank you in advance for keeping our readers informed.
