FAMILY VALUES FAVOR SWISS SKYDIVER TO TAKE ON BOYS IN THE BLUE GRASS by Bill Finley UNCLE CHUCK The filly Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) will be out to make history Saturday when she takes on males in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland. No filly has ever won the prestigious race. Trainer Kenny McPeek had nominated Swiss Skydiver for both the Blue Grass and the GI Ashland S. for fillies. He waited until Wednesday morning, shortly before the draw, to make his decision. He said a major factor was that he has another filly for the Ashland in Envoutante (Uncle Mo). "In any other year, this would have been an easier decision, but I have Envoutante running in the Ashland and I think she has a big chance there," he said. "I hate running entries where you know you are going to beat yourself with one or the other. [Owner] Peter Callahan is as game as Dick Tracy and I am too. I do think it will be fun. If she can jump through this hoop, great. If she can't, we will backtrack and go to the [GI] Alabama or Uncle Chuck | Benoit just wait for the [GI] Kentucky Oaks." For instance: go to a horse sale; buy a colt with Classic pedigree; put him into training with a silver-haired dude in California--and Bob's your uncle. Not that it can have been terribly easy for Bob Baffert to show his most avuncular side just lately. A few weeks ago, for any of his unbeaten sophomores even to prove the best in their own shedrow seemed likely to certify something close to greatness. But now Nadal (Blame) has been retired; Charlatan (Speightstown) is out of the GI Kentucky Derby; and Authentic (Into Mischief) has met his match out on the track. Moreover positive tests for lidocaine now menace the immaculate records of both Charlatan and the breathtaking filly Gamine (Into Mischief) with a first blemish. With the confirmation this week of what had previously been a prematurely leaked report, at least Baffert has been able to publish the case for his exculpation. In the meantime, however, he had already reminded us that this cluster of scintillating talents, back in the spring, was never just a happy coincidence but simply the latest proof of his program's historic efficacy. Bold Ruler | Horsephotos In the round, then, Uncle Chuck can draw on some pretty deep wells of speed and class, hardly surprising when his first five dams are by Unbridled's Song, Gone West, Damascus, Buckpasser and Majestic Prince. Now it's over to Uncle Mo to help stretch out the family brilliance--conceivably to meet the demands of a 20-runner Derby. The most conspicuous element in that process is the duplication of Caro. Uncle Mo, of course, is keeping his outcross sire-line alive; while Forest Music's sire Unbridled's Song is out of the Caro mare Trolley Song. Though Uncle Mo is a grandson of the speedy In Excess, as bedrock Caro offers a strong Classic influence. MAKING UP THE GROUND KING SWOOPS FOR After weeks of manic re-jigging of the European Pattern, EXCELEBRATION COLT Thursday=s abundance of group-race action will see more pieces of the jigsaw fitted as the main racing nations come close to completing a catch-up with the established order. Alongside the opener of Newmarket=s July Festival, racing finally comes back to York with the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante S. and G3 Tattersalls Musidora S. taking some of the focus away from Suffolk. For the first and probably the last time, the two extended 10-furlong 3-year-old tests follow Saturday=s Epsom Classics to which they customarily prove such a vital pointer. His 2020 Royal Ascot treble is undoubtedly the highlight of his diversification to date and, with the assistance of his regular agent Anthony Bromley, he added another four Flat-bred horses to his string on Wednesday, including the day's top lot, a colt by Excelebration (Ire). "He was our favourite horse of the sale," said Bromley after being pushed to 140,000gns for lot 108 by underbidder David Redvers. EXCEED FOAL LEADS Mackenzie Extends for Exceed Bruce MacKenzie was the successful bidder on the day's top WAY AT INGLIS lot, going to $260,000 for Lot 174, a colt from Middlebrook Valley Lodge by Darley's Exceed And Excel. Mackenzie, whose horses carry the 'Oakfield' name of the family farm near Newcastle, was bidding from home and was happy enough with the reports he was given to bid with confidence. "I had multiple people look at the horse who I trust," he said. "He could be the nicest colt at the sale. I had a guy there for two days looking around, at end of the day had four-five picked out but said this was the one." Mackenzie said the horse would go back to the family property and would be trained by either Kristen Buchanan or Damien Lane. "We=ll break him in and educate him here. He=ll be here tomorrow," he said.
