January 23, 2012, Issue 278 Do Call Letters Matter? That’s the question bouncing around Country Aircheck headquarters, based on recent developments. Our overview of the Charlotte Country battle (CAW 1/9) and two recent major market station launches (Minneapolis and Cincinnati) got the wheels turning. Neither Charlotte outlet – Clear Channel’s WKKT (96.9 The Kat) nor CBS Radio’s WSOC (103.7 Country’s Hottest Hits) – uses calls except for legal IDs. Elsewhere, CBS Radio’s KMNB (BUZ’N)/ Minneapolis flipped Christmas Day and, while it did make a call- letter change (from WLTE), its on air branding is built exclusively around the BUZ’N handle. That’s also the case with the imaging of Cumulus’ WNNF/Cincinnati, which focuses on the “Great Country” position but has not instituted a new set of calls. PPM, clearly, has changed the call-letter game. “People don’t have to remember what they listened to,” says CC’s Greensboro and Greenville, SC OM Bruce Logan. Jersey Boys: KTCS/Ft. January 23, 2012 Page 3 has surely changed the equation,” Rosin added. “The image is out there ... that the radiothon ‘kills’ ratings.” Rosin, however, says the picture isn’t anywhere near that bleak, particularly for those employing the proper strategies. For instance, he notes that stations that hold their radiothons during the Holiday book lose less audience (23%) and bounce back more quickly (94% back within five days) than those staging in Q1 (26%/92%). Another successful tactic is scheduling the radiothon for Thursday and Friday, pushing the two days of audience recovery to the weekend. In looking at stations that take that approach, Rosin found that ratings for the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday following a radiothon were down only 3%. “This should help put into perspective the total impact,” Rosin says. “It is not small, but not nearly as large as the mythology that has grown around it. It is not a ratings killer ... the drop is not that large, and it is fleeting.” –Chuck Aly PAGE THREE PIC That Kind Of Girl: PattyPAGE Loveless gets 3 the PIC label and radio love from Tours: Blood, Sweat & Peers (l-r) MCA’s Bruce Hinton, radio’s Greg Cole, the label’s Pat Surnegie Eric Church opened his Blood, Sweat & Beers ([email protected]) and (far right) MCA’s Shelia Shipley Tour with support act Brantley Gilbert Thursday Biddy ([email protected]) during CRS 1989.
