The guidelines are designed to help teachers by providing film synopses and suggestions on use, objectives (behavioral and general), motivation, vocabulary, culminating activities, evaluation, and additional resource materials. Florida edition films are listed by subject area with title, captioned films for the deaf number, appropriate age level, and page number. A complete list of all other educational captioned films for which study guides have been written for the past 8 years appears in the appendix. Also provided is a directory of publishers and distributors. The scripts of five films are included as a possible helpful addition. This workshop was held on July 10 through August 4, 1972 , at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine, Florida. It was jointly sponsored by the Florida School and Media Services and Captioned Films for the Deaf, United States Office of Education. This study guide will be referred to as the Florida Edition. These guides are designed to help teachers by giving a Film Synopsis and suggestions on Recommended Use, Objectives- both general and behavioral, Motivation, Vocabulary, Culminating Activities, Evaluation and references to other Resource Materials. The suggested behavioral objectives which are listed under Purpose are basically written in pure behavioral terminology. They are written in terms that would permit the teacher to measure changes in pupil behavior asa result of viewing the film and completing related studies. The outline may be followed precisely, in part, or modified by the teacher to meet the needs of individual classes and students. Scripts have been included in the Study Guide Section for the following five films: Rosie's Walk, At Your Fingertips: Boxes, What Do Flowers Do?, Volleyball: Skills and Practice, and The Industrial City. This isa new addition and if it proves helpful, future editions may include scripts asa regular part of the format. A complete list of all captioned films for which study guides have been written for the past eight years appears in the index portion of the appendix. Films are listed under subject area headings with divisions for: title of the film, CFD number, level, edition and page on which they can be found. The appendix also includes a list of abbreviations, and a directory of publishers and distributors. The films in the Florida edition cover a wide range of subjects. Many of them can be used in more than one subject area. Their uses are as VI unlimited as yamr own imagination... they can stimulate discussion and 3 creative expresNon, promote personal involvement, and clearly demonstrate difficult or new concepts. In making them available to classroom teachers, the publishers express appreciation to the many individuals who contributed with the hope that deaf students throughout the nation will be beneficiaries of these efforts.     FILMS FANTASTIC 5 The Original CAPTAIN MARVEL Films Fantastic 5, published by Eric Jamborsky for the NFFF Film Bureau. [email protected] Captain Marvel was originally a character in Fawcett Comics, their entry into the super hero comic market. In the origin story newsboy Billy Batson encounters the wizard Shazam who tells Billy that by speaking the wizard’s name he will become Captain Marvel. In the form of Captain Marvel he will have the wisdom of Soloman, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury (thereby hopeless scrambling Greek/Roman mythology). The character quickly caught on, due in part to the often tongue-in-cheek approach. In 1940 Republic Pictures was interested in bringing a super hero to the screen and approached DC Comics about licensing Superman, but DC had already made a deal with Max Fleischer to produce a series of animated cartoons. Republic then approached Fawcett and got the rights to make a serial of the ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL. Now Republic made the best serials at the time, but was not necessarily known for its fidelity to the source material. Billy Batson was no longer selling newspapers, but was broadcasting on radio. Captain Marvel became a bit more gritty, casually tossing bad guys from the roofs of tall buildings and not bothering to catch them. But the Saturday morning audiences ate it up and the ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL became one of the most popular serials of all time, right on the heels of Universal’s FLASH GORDON.

Indeed, the war movie and action-adventure genres underwent a resurgence in that era, paralleling and epitomizing the "America First" and "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!" ethos of the Ronald Reagan-George Bush era and its immedi- ate aftermath.' Despite Steven Spielberg's early reputation as a "pop- corn" director of "kidult" movies and his more recent incarnation as a "serious" filmmaker and liberal "FOB" (Friend of Bill [Clinton]), his oeuvre stands as one of the chief cinematic purveyors of American ex- ceptionalism and triumphalism in contemporary filmdom. He could rightly be called the American Kipling.2 Six of the top twenty box office hits of all time have been Steven Spielberg films. In addition, eight of his seventeen features to date have dealt with the World War II epoch.3 In most of Spielberg's feature films, the Americans win the day--either 115 3. 116 FRANK P.
