Knowing Good Sex Pays Off: The Image of the Journalist as a Famous, Exciting and Chic Sex Columnist Named Carrie Bradshaw in HBO’s Sex and the City By Bibi Wardak Abstract New York Star sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw lives the life of a celebrity in HBO’s Sex and the City. She mingles with the New York City elite at extravagant parties, dates the city’s most influential men and enjoys the adoration of fans. But Bradshaw echoes the image of many female journalists in popular culture when it comes to romance. Bradshaw is thirty-something, unmarried and unsure about having children. Despite having a successful career and loyal friends, she feels unfulfilled after each failed romantic relationship. I. Introduction “A wildly successful career and a relationship -- I was afraid…women only get one or the other.”1 That’s a fear Carrie Bradshaw just can’t shake. The sex columnist for the New York Star is unmarried, career-oriented and unsure if she will ever have a traditional family.2 Just like other modern sob sisters, she is romantically unfulfilled and has sacrificed aspects of her personal life for professional success.3 Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker in HBO’s hit television show Sex and the City, portrays a stereotypical image of female journalists found in television and film.4 She and other female journalists in the series struggle to balance a successful Knowing Good Sex Pays Off: The Image of the Journalist as a Famous, Exciting and Chic Sex Columnist Named Carrie Bradshaw in HBO’s Sex and the City By Bibi Wardak 2 career and satisfying romantic life.

  • HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007
1 HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007 Submitted by Gareth Andrew James to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, January 2011. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.

Wolk Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester, Ralph Meranto, Artistic Director. Welcome... “Collaboration, which in circumstances associated with hate-generating leadership, has often and rightfully been given a bad name. In the theatre, it is our lifeblood; the essential component that allows for creativity to thrive. In light of recent events in our world that may equate collaboration with complacency or worse, we have made an intensive effort to accentuate the positive definition of that word. Using the testimonies of Survivors of Hitler’s death camps and the gift of hope they continue to share with succeeding generations, they have become our lodestar, guiding us toward light, reframing our present dread into action. That action makes use of our skills as artists. We hope that by sharing Never Is Now with you, we may help you reframe what seems daunting into something life-affirming. For those of us collaborating on the making of this event, we’re stronger than we were when we began.

  • Introduction: Placing the Self Within the Frame 1 New Storytelling
Notes Introduction: Placing the Self within the Frame 1. This is performed by the Mamas and the Papas (see Chapter 6). 2. For various opinions on the potential of textual analysis see Childs (2006), Kovala (2008) and McKee (2003). 3. Although Gwen Haworth’s documentary is relevant to lesbian discourse, as Haworth, a male to female transsexual, expresses lesbian desire, I have not included this work in my book, as the focus is largely transsexual. Despite this, Haworth’s documentary is highly contiguous to the theoretical ideas expressed within this book, concerning self-reflexive narrative expression and sexual diversity. 4. Also there are still laws which oppress non-heterosexuals within the Western world. 5. It is important to note that this often includes production funding from Anglocentric sources, which bears its own implications of textual influence. 1 New Storytelling: Transitions from the Past 1. Howard Auster had changed his name to Howard Austen early in his career, on advice from Gore Vidal to avoid advertising his Jewish identity at a time when it was hard to obtain work as a Jew (Vidal, 1995). In Gore Vidal’s mem- oir, Howard’s name is restored to the original spelling; hence I have adopted it here. 2. I use the term ‘literature’ in the general sense as ‘serious writing’, esteemed by authority such as academia. 3. I am only discussing the media of radio in this chapter, as a precursor to later developments in television, film and new media through the World Wide Web. 4. It is important to note that in some non-Western countries conversely homo- sexuality under certain circumstances may be considered to offer positive myths.

  • Hbo Premieres New Season of Boardwalk Empire
HBO PREMIERES NEW SEASON OF BOARDWALK EMPIRE Miami, September 25, 2012 – HBO Latin America announced that it will premiere the third season of the four-time Emmy® winning, highly acclaimed series, Boardwalk Empire, on October 14. Created by Terrence Winter (Emmy® Award-winning writer of The Sopranos) and directed and produced by Martin Scorsese (Academy Award® winning director), this one-hour drama series chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Emmy® nominee and Golden Globe® winner Steve Buscemi), Atlantic City’s undisputed czar at a time when Prohibition proved to be a major catalyst in the rise of organized crime in America. At the end of the second season, Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) married Nucky to avoid being forced to testify against him. After a prosecution witness was found dead with a “confession” next to his body, the judge declared a mistrial and Nucky was freed. Van Alden (Michael Shannon), with the feds in pursuit and his baby and nanny in tow, moved to Cicero, IL, under an assumed name. Jimmy (Michael Pitt), regretting his role in the failed hit on Nucky, tried to get back in his former boss’ good graces, but Nucky was unmoved; using Manny Horvitz (William Horsythe) as bait, Nucky called Jimmy out in the rain and killed him. The next day, he told Margaret that Jimmy had reenlisted in the Army, then celebrated a windfall with cronies on the highway site he thought he owned. Little did he realize that Margaret had just signed the deed over to the Church. Consisting of 12 episodes, season 3 is set 16 months later on New Year’s Eve 1922-23.
