  • The Children and Youth Empowerment Centre (CYEC), Nyeri
    The Children and Youth Empowerment Centre (CYEC), Nyeri. The Centre is located approximately 175 kilometers north of Nairobi on the outskirts of Nyeri town, the administrative headquarters of both Nyeri East District and Kenya’s Central Province. CYEC is an initiative of the national program for street dwelling persons and is intended to play a central role in the innovation of holistic and sustainable solutions for the population of street dwelling young people in Kenya. The Pennsylvania State University has been involved with the CYEC since 2009. Students from both the Berks and Main campuses of Penn State have focused on areas including bio-medical engineering, architectural engineering, teaching/literacy, and agriculture to help the CYEC. At the Center we have participated in constructing a green house, a drip irrigation center, creating books for the children, conducting various types of research, and much more. In 2010 the CYEC asked if Penn State would focus on the creation of an Eco-Village in Lamuria, a sustainable and eco-friendly village where the street children could go once they have reached adulthood to work and participate in a community environment and economy. Under the direction of Janelle Larson and Sjoerd Duiker, the 497C Agricultural Systems in East Africa class was The undeveloped Eco-Village site created at the Main campus. Our class consisted of only (2010) six students (five of whom were able to travel to Kenya) and met once every other Friday for two hours. This specific course focused on conducting research on agricultural production in semi-arid regions of east Africa, culminating with an opportunity for application through on-site assessment work in Kenya.

O Box 109-60401, Chuka Received January 2017; Revised March 2017; Accepted June 2017 ABSTRACT Understanding the local community perceptions and attitudes towards natural resource conservation is recognised a useful step in identifying strategies of involving community members in conservation programmes. The main aim of the current study was to determine the local community perception of the causes and effects of the deforestation of Kaptagat Forest. Descriptive research design was used to determine the causes of deforestation, extent of deforestation, the socio economic impacts, and the measures that have been put in place to control and stop further deforestation. Systematic random sampling was used to administer questionnaires to the target population and results analysed using chi-square tests. The results showed that the respondents differed significantly on the causes of deforestation. of Kaptagat.. Apparently illegal logging, charcoal burning and firewood were identified as the most important drivers of deforestation. Majority of the respondents felt that the forest has been highly deforested. The majority felt that reduction in water volumes in streams, changes in rainfall patterns, increased soil erosion and siltation were making the community worse off socio- economically. Furthermore, the community felt that there was a strong relationship between the level of poverty and the level of deforestation of Kaptagat Forest, thus revealing an understanding of the tripartite relationship between development, environment and conservation of the forest.

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract This study examines the potential for contemporary visual art to reinvigorate democracy in 21st century Nairobi, Kenya, through an interdisciplinary investigation. The new millennium ushered in fresh hope for democratisation in the postcolonial East African country. In 2002, Daniel arap Moi’s 24 years of authoritarian rule ended. The opposition were victorious at the ballot box, instilling a belief amongst the electorate that formal political processes could bring change. However, the post-election violence of 2007/8 shattered such convictions. But, from this election result came a progressive Constitution and with it possibilities for creating change. These momentous events underscore Kenya’s topsy-turvy path towards democracy – a path whose trajectory is charted in the experience of ordinary Kenyans who believe in democracy’s value and their right to participate in politics and civil life. Artists, too, have been at the forefront of this ongoing struggle. This study draws on empirical research to demonstrate contemporary visual art’s capacity to expand ways of practising, experiencing and understanding democracy.
