ONE MAN AND HIS CAMERA THE RAILWAY PHOTOGRAPHY OF TREVOR OWEN COMPILED BY PAUL CHANCELLOR Trevor Owen is undoubtedly one of the greatest names in railway colour photography. Avid readers of the railway press will be very familiar with his name whilst many others would be able to spot one of his pictures without noticing the photographer credit. First and foremost the quality of the image was generally second to none but other factors would betray the touch of his genius, such as the creative use of light, often low £30.00 winter sunshine. Other ‘trademarks’ were locomotives in action rather than at rest and POST FREE trains in the landscape rather than being tightly framed front three quarters views. -

No. 12 The “Midland Scotsman,” L.M.S. First published in the Meccano Magazine December 1927 In this country the year 1927 has been one of railway record-breaking. Three out of the four great railway groups have each produced an express passenger locomotive design of greater power than ever previously attempted on the respective lines, and it was only a year previously that the fourth of the groups did the same thing. A working steam pressure of 250 lb. per sq. in., higher than ever previously employed in a British locomotive design, has been incorporated in two of the 1927 designs just mentioned. While these developments have been taking place in the locomotive power itself, new changes of a record character have been made in the working of the train services for which these engines have been designed. During the past year there has been a kind of “competition” in long-distance running. The world’s record in daily non-stop journey distance, hitherto held for so many years past by the Great Western 1 Railway with their 225 ¾ -mile journey from Paddington to Plymouth, went doubly by the board last summer when the L.M.S. Company instituted non-stop running over the 236 miles between Euston and Carnforth, and the London and North Eastern over the even longer distance of 268 ½ miles between Euston and the Border City of Carlisle. It is the “Royal Scot” Express – the subject of our consideration this month – that is responsible for this remarkable feat, and it is the new “Royal Scot” type of three-cylinder 4-6-0 express locomotive, which is one of the two new British types employing the record working pressure of 250 lb. -

The following pages are an attempt to supply something amusing, instructive, and suggestive to travellers who, not caring particularly where they go, or how long they stay at any particular place, may wish to know something of the towns and districts through which they pass, on their way to Wales, the Lakes of Cumberland, or the Highlands of Scotland; or to those who, having a brief vacation, may wish to employ it among pleasant rural scenes, and in investigating the manufactures, the mines, and other sources of the commerce and influence of this small island and great country. In performing this task, I have relied partly on personal observation, partly on notes and the memory of former journeys; and where needful have used the page 1 / 380 historical information to be found in cyclopaedias, and local guide-books. This must account for, if it does not excuse, the unequal space devoted to districts with equal claims to attention. But it would take years, if not a lifetime, to render the manuscript of so discursive a work complete and correct. I feel that I have been guilty of many faults of commission and omission; but if the friends of those localities to which I have not done justice will take the trouble to forward to me any facts or figures of public general interest, they shall be carefully embodied in any future edition, should the book, as I hope it will, arrive at such an honour and profit. -

EARLY BRITISH RAILWAY TUNNELS The implications for planners, landowners and passengers between 1830 and 1870 Hubert John Pragnell Doctor of Philosophy University of York Railway Studies October 2016 2 3 Abstract Of the many fears of early railway travellers, speed and a journey through a dark tunnel were among the greatest. This thesis looks at railway tunnels and their place in the minds of travellers, landowners, engineers and navvies, writers, journalists and artists, during the pioneering days of railway development up to 1870. Although tunnels and tunnelling occupy an important place in engineering literature, they have been neglected by social historians. The intention of this thesis is to demonstrate that tunnels are worthy of as much attention as other railway structures such as the station, which has been the subject of railway literature in recent years. Chapter 1 begins with a review of recent railway literature in which the railway tunnel has been introduced as a secondary topic. Chapter 2 discusses the problems involved in early tunnelling, and uses Brunel’s Box Tunnel as a case study. Chapter 3 discusses the relationship between railway companies, landowners and Parliament. Lord Lichfield and the Trent Valley Railway at Shugborough Hall are used as a case study. Chapter 4 discusses tunnels in early railway guide books and literature. It also examines their depiction in railway prints, as an architectural feature in their own right or set into a wider landscape with its own message for the viewer. Particular reference is made to pictures by J.C. Bourne for his volumes on the London & Birmingham and Great Western railways.
