Greetings from Graham

Dear Friends, Here are a number of events over the next couple of months that I would like to highlight. I look forward to seeing you at some or all of them!

Harvest Some of you will be reading this October edition before the end of September. If that is the case, it may not be too late to invite you to our Harvest Fetival on 30th September. This year we are meeting on a farm, so that we can celebrate the harvest in a place where we can also see it. ‘All is safely gathered in’ around us. We meet at Home Farm, thanks to the kindness of Harry & Jane Parker. This is in Stourton Lane, as you head towards Kilmington, postcode BA12 6QL. There is plenty of parking, and the service will be suitable for all ages. Sudan & South Sudan You may know that Diocese has been linked with Sudan and South Sudan for over 40 years. Our deanery, the Deanery, is specifically linked with the Maridi Diocese in South Sudan. These two new countries have struggled greatly since their recent independence, and there is great need. On Friday 12th October, at 7.30pm, there is a quiz, with hot supper, to raise money and awareness in Village Hall. Call Eve on 01985 216238 for tickets [see page 12] Jill Farndale Jill is the new Headteacher at Bourton School, and we are delighted to welcome her into the parish. On Sunday Oct. 7th, Jill will be commissioned in our service at Bourton Church (10am). She will also share some of her hopes and ambitions for the school. Money On Thursday 17th October, Nigel Salisbury, Chair of the Salisbury Diocesan Board of Finance, will be speaking to the Deanery Synod about the plans the Diocese have for the next 10 years. For various reasons, the Fairer Share, which we pay to the Diocese, for the provision of stipendiary ministry in this parish, will increase significantly. This is an opportunity to hear and to question, and to make our views known. The meeting is at All Saints at 7.15 for 7.30. Lifts are available. [see page 12] Remembrance Sunday This year is significant for two reasons: Remembrance Sunday falls on Armistice Day (11th November), and we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the ending of the First World War. Because of this, we are expecting that many will want to give thanks for the sacrifices of all those who have preserved our freedoms in times of conflict. We will therefore be holding a service in each church in the parish at 10.15am, followed by an Act of Remembrance at the four War Memorials, with two minutes silence at 11am. We look forward to seeing you there. [see page 14] And finally… They told me I was gullible. I believed them. Your friend in Christ, Graham Rev Graham Perryman 3

News from

As October arrives it means the garden will soon be visited by thousands every day, here to see the leaves change around the lake. Many people often ask when the best time to see the garden is, and it’s a hard one to answer. What we always recommend is that people visit a few times to see autumn throughout the season, capturing the trees and their changing colours at different stages.

Whilst some of the trees already seem to be changing due to the conditions this summer, we are hopeful that this autumn will be as spectacular as previous years. The autumn colour that we experience will depend on how much wind and rain and sun we have over the next few weeks; cold nights and sunny days is one recipe for a great autumn display.

We recently said goodbye to Mac, who has been our General Manager for the past 13 years, and, as of 1 October, will be welcoming Phil Niemand to the post. Phil is very excited to be joining the team here at Stourhead and hopes that together we will continue to care for and share this beautiful place.

Another recent addition to the team here at Stourhead is a new Volunteering Officer, Hannah Bester. We couldn’t do the work that we do, in terms of welcoming and giving visitors a great time, as well as caring for and conserving Stourhead for future generations to enjoy, without our Volunteering Officer. Hannah’s role sees her looking after and improving the experience we offer the 500+ volunteers to help us do what we do every day.

On the property our Christmas plans are coming together, and scarily enough we already have Christmas cards for sale in our shop. Our Father Christmas events are once again proving popular with quite a number of families calling each day to book their places to see the jolly man in red.

If you are keen to find out more about Stourhead or get involved in the work that we do, we have lots of volunteering opportunities across the property. Please do contact me. We look forward to seeing you at Stourhead again soon.

Kilmington House Group Report 2017-18 The house group, jointly led by Brian Martin and Harry Allen, has met on a regular basis all year with breaks for the summer holidays and school half terms. Typically seven members attend each Wednesday evening at Fiona Redfearn-Mcnab`s house in Kilmington. Studies in 2017-18 covered the following topics:  “Standing Firm in Faith” by John Stott  “Psalms-Prayers from the Heart” – 12 studies by Eugene H Peterson  During Advent we studied “Journeying with the Magi” by Keith Duke. This was a 5 week course including readings, prayers and discussion  We continued with “Psalms” until Lent  During Lent we did a course “Towards Wholeness” prepared by Mona Tyler. This was 5 sessions comprising bible readings, discussion, prayers, singing and a short service in the Celtic tradition  “Psalms” continued until the summer break in June We resumed the House group on September 5th in Kilmington and are studying James using a book on “Early Christian Letters for Everyone” by Tom Wright It has been very enjoyable discussing the various topics around Fiona’s log fire with a glass of wine. We have each enjoyed the stimulating discussions on the various topics we have studied Harry Allen and Brian Martin

Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education The Board of Education, formed in 1830, serves 194 schools and 43,000 children. Many of the church schools were founded before that date and the Board was formed to support their work and promote new schools. There is an exciting plan for the next 5 years, which includes:  opening new church schools with church communities at their heart  supporting strong school improvement to ensure that every church school is a great school  placing chaplaincy and the development of spiritual leadership at the heart of our work  supporting a culture of academy trusts (church and non-church led) in which church school education flourishes and supporting the training, recruitment and retention of inspiring teachers. If you would like to learn more, please contact the Clerk to the Board of Education: Sarah McNicol: [email protected] 01722 746949. Please send your name and short CV. 10

Report on the Thursday Housegroup: 2018 What do you believe about heaven and angels? Do you believe in guardian angels? How are angels described in the Bible? How do we prepare for Advent? Do we need to learn the value of waiting? How do we face death ourselves and the deaths of others? What makes you angry? How can it be controlled? What is the balance between faith and works? What can we learn of relevance to our lives from Books such as James in the NT? These are a few of the questions we have considered in the Thursday Housegroup. About 9/10 of us meet weekly (not all members of Upper Stour) and we meet to share our faith and our doubts. There is honesty and openness in the group founded on mutual trust. We are ready to challenge one another and even more to support one another in our individual journeys of faith. Generally the group is led by Glenis or myself but there is a high level of participation. The group has been running for almost 9 years and it has been the most important influence on my own Christian life in the last few years. It has prompted me to read more widely to illuminate my faith and think about some difficult issues which face Christians today. The greatest benefit has been sharing within the group and I know other members would say this. We also find meeting together very enjoyable and there is plenty of laughing! Our meetings last about an hour on Thursday mornings usually in my home. It can last longer if you include chatting over coffee but we aim to finish by 11am and people leave if they have to go but others stay. We welcome new members anytime. Margaret Martin and Glenis Allen

October Parish Catering Days Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th October This year we will be serving the public and selling produce on the THREE days mentioned above. For this major effort we will clearly need a great deal of help in various areas such as shopping, making soup, making cakes (of course!), setting up and clearing up. In addition we will require kind and willing souls on the three days to be in the kitchen, or serving, or operating the dishwasher and the till. If you think you can help, please contact me or Jane Parker, as below: Celia Cotton 01985 844613 / [email protected] Jane Parker 01985 844248 / [email protected]

At the same time we will again have a produce stall at which we will be selling home made jams, chutneys etc, plus anything anyone might care to offer for sale. Before 13th October any produce can be taken to Sue Evans (Badgers, Forge Lane, Zeals BA12 6NF), and after Saturday 20th October to Liz Kemp (Appletree House, Zeals BA12 6NH, 01747 840272).

These days represent a vital fundraising effort for our parish. Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated

News from Parish Councils Bourton Although it seems a long time ago now, The Bourton Bash was a big success, so well done to Alex Ross and Tom Shean and also their small army of volunteers for organising such a great community event. The children are now all back at St George's School for the autumn term but it would seem some parents are still parking inconsiderately on West Bourton Road, opposite Brickyard Lane. Parking on the corner here presents a danger not only to other road users but also to parents and children who walk to school. This problem will continue to be monitored both by the school and the Speedwatch Team. The Community Workshop event held on Saturday 15th in Bourton Village Hall was well attended. Everyone was able to see outline plans for the site of a New Hall together with a video of aerial footage of both potential sites. There was a lively interchange of views at a debate held the same evening. The New Village Hall project team has gathered in more than 60 written comments as well as the points raised during the debate. The team will be remounting the presentation of the plans on Saturday the 29th September from 14.00 to 17.00 for those who were not able to make the 15th. Eve Wynn, Bourton Parish Clerk: 07702 709 557

Kilmington The new swings have been installed in the playing field; we have been able to provide this new equipment from Section 106 monies. These funds are generated from a charge made to property developers and is part of the cost of planning permission and is a local planning authority requirement. One of the purposes of the fund is the provision of recreational facilities. This year’s RoSPA report been received; the inspector visited the playing field on Monday 10 September. This will be studied in detail over the course of the next few weeks and a plan to implement any remedial works put in place ready for approval at the next PC meeting. Cllr Cotton has been assured by that a works order for the resurfacing of The Street has been issued and it is expected to be done at the end of the year/early next year. Cllr Cotton has driven around the village taking photographs of the large pot holes and these will be reported en bloc to Highways in the hope that action can be taken to repair them. There is nothing further to report at this time on the improvement to parking for the residents of Brookside Terrace but our next step is to obtain advice from Wiltshire Council on a pre- planning application and Cllr Meeker, in conjunction with Cllr Cotton, is will be moving this forward over the next few months. The Clerk has drawn up a revised Snow Plan for the coming winter which has been signed off by the Weather Team at WC; a quantity of salt has been ordered which will be collected by Cllr Reeves from the depot later this month. The efforts of Cllrs Jeans and Cotton to have the mirror at the Coombe Barn Lane/B3092 junction replaced have been successful. /cont page 17..... 16

The next meeting of Kilmington PC will take place on 22 November at 7.30 pm in Whitesheet CE Primary Academy. Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Stourton with Gasper Due to the diligent efforts of former parish councillor Harry Parker, the SID which we own in conjunction with the neighbouring parishes of Zeals and Kilmington, is now up and running in Stourton Lane; the intention is for it to be rotated between the three villages on a regular basis. There is nothing further to report on the B3092 double white lines request but we are hoping to hear the results of the survey before the next CATG meeting on 7 November. A revised Snow Plan for the parish has been signed off by Wiltshire Council, in conjunction with the National Trust, for the coming winter and an order placed for 40 x 25kg bags of salt which will be stored at Home Farm in readiness for any bad weather. The Parish Council has revised its policy on the defibrillator as the Wiltshire Ambulance service now recommends that these are not kept in locked boxes so the access code is now displayed in the kiosk; a new light has also been fitted in the kiosk. It was agreed that a Housing Needs Survey will be undertaken in the parish to establish if there is a need for the bungalows proposed to be built by Stourhead Western Estate. This will be conducted by Wiltshire Council at no cost to the parish council. The next meeting of the PC will take place on Tuesday 4 December 7.00 pm in the Memorial Hall, Stourton. Ruth Burrows, Clerk to Parish Council

Zeals Zeals Parish Council met on 13th September in the much improved Village Hall. Councillors and the Hall's Committee were delighted with the outcome of the roof repair: not only were the west-facing tiles replaced, but the whole project was finished on time, it was completed within budget, and with minimum disruption too. Councillors were very pleased with the new-look village bus shelter, with its walls freshly painted by volunteers, together with the wooden seating added, again aided by a donation from a local resident with the installation completed by a local craftsman. Good news was received from Wiltshire Council. Their Highways Engineer has approved our preferred site for the Speed Indicator Device; the Principal Engineer will be sending one of her representatives to view the state of the turfed build-outs on New Road, and, finally, the Planning Enforcement Officer will be visiting the depot at Longcross to check that all planning conditions have been met. Special arrangements have been made to commemorate the Centenary of Armistice Day in a significant and fitting way. Full minutes can be viewed on the Parish Council website, www.hugofox.com/communities/zeals, or on the Parish noticeboards. The next meeting is scheduled for 8 November. Graham Edgar: Clerk to Zeals Parish Council. . 17

Country Calendar: October Heavy dew, autumn’s hue, misty hills and vale A nip in the air, the sight of a hare ! The screech of a buzzard, a master of his craft The whoosh of his wings as he dives so fast ! Hare is aware and quick as the blink of his eye Has gone – he has no wish to fly in the sky ! Autumn is upon us, and I do love this season; it seems there is so much happening in the countryside. The ram will be going in with his ladies and the cattle will be coming into their winter quarters. Next year’s harvest is now in the ground and at Home Farm we have moved on from minimum tillage to Conservation Agriculture, which means no cultivations at all, just straight in after the combine with the newly purchased direct drill. The principles of Conservation Agriculture are forward thinking and progressive with minimum soil disturbance. We do not plough, cultivate or disturb the soil. We have been doing minimum tillage for 15 years and moving to Conservation Agriculture (CA) is the next step. The aim of CA is to improve soil structure, stability and fertility by building carbon (organic matter/humus) into the soil. Conservation Agriculture does not encourage any cultivations, for this damages the soil particles which break down the glues/gums that binds the soil. Pluses are: reduction in purchasing fertilizers and chemical sprays, a healthy worm population, more natural fertility reducing the weed problem, and a huge reduction in fuel consumption. Conservation Agriculture has proven to increase crop output and is a greener sustainable way forward. With environmental issues at the forefront of Britain’s Agriculture policies we need to be ahead of the game especially as we go forward into Brexit ! Jane Parker

Green Fingers : October Notes from the not so green fingered Autumn is now here for real and what a beautiful time of year it is with the trees changing colour. It is a great time to visit Stourhead and see the magnificent display of autumn colour . Having just been to Bourton garden club and listened to Mike Burke from Castle Gardens in Sherborne on putting our gardens to bed --- it seems there is a lot to do so here are a few tips:

1 Now is a good time for planting as the soil is warm and moist. 2 Cut back and divide herbaceous perennials. 3 Move tender plants to the greenhouse or conservatory. 4 Harvest apple', pears, grapes and nuts . 5 Do a bit of lawn work by scarification, aeration. Apply a top dressing. 6 Rake up those leaves. Pippa Schofield

First Ever DOG SHOW held on 16th September at Kilmington & Stourton Home Guard Club This was a complete and utter success from start to finish, with very positive feedback from social media and friends alike. Best in Show went to a beautiful German Pointer bitch called Islay whose owner Laura Dietz lives in the village. They received a cup which will be kept by them for the year and then given to next year’s annual winners. Bellevue Vets sponsored the day, judging all 10 classes including Best Spaniel, Best Condition etc. They supplied amazing goody bags to all the winners and the winning rosettes were printed with the Club name, the class details and the vets’ details on the ribbons. Every one who entered received rosettes and The Dogsfriends charity goody bags were given out throughout the day. A staggering £345 of profit (£69 expenses) was made for my chosen local charity Dogsfriends: It was a fabulous day and I can only thank everyone involved for making it so special and to add that all the dogs are winners in my eyes! Zeals Walkers Seventeen Walkers met to share the drive to a new destination at The Coppleridge, Motcombe. The Inn welcomes walkers and we were invited to choose from their Sunday Menu to give us all an incentive! Setting off in ideal walking conditions we headed west along a lane and over one of the very few stiles to be negotiated. We could then take in the splendid far reaching views: King Alfred’s Tower to the north and Duncliffe and to the south with Bulbarrow beyond. Next we made for Kings Court Wood passing the impressive Donedge Lodge Farm which could be seen from various points along the walk. Their land seemed well maintained along with the gates and accesses easy to negotiate. The figure of eight walk then crossed, for the first time, the community field with various ponds, wildlife habitat and picnic tables. It was here that we were to disturb a heron on our return journey. Turning onto New Lane we followed the footpath to the main road heading into Motcombe Village. We then took a little pathway, near the church, bringing us to the Village Hall. Crossing the playing fields there we turned left onto a tree lined road leading back towards the village itself. Back onto New Lane for a brief criss-crossing of the community field again we took a path marked as a bridleway on the map but surely too narrow for a horse? Arriving at The Coppleridge just in time to see someone arrive in style for their lunch - landing their helicopter is apparently a common occurrence! Fourteen walkers, who remained to eat, were then treated to excellent service in a spacious private setting in the sun lounge. All agreed it was very enjoyable and one commented it may have been the best meal for a long time. Those indulging in desserts probably exceeded the five hundred calories apparently burned by the eleven thousand steps taken on this five mile (approximately) walk. Steve Gale The walk of October 7th will be in and around the village of with lunch at The Royal Oak. We will meet at Zeals Post Office a little earlier than usual, 9.45. If you are interested in joining us for the walk please contact Liz Kemp on [email protected] or 01747 840272.
