MAY 2017 Poche Parole Vol. XXXIII, No. 18 PRESERVING AND PROMOTING ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE SOCIAL MEETINGS/EVENT OVERVIEW JOIN US AT THE ICS GALA: May 19th, 2017 - ICS Gala at the Italian Embassy. This year’s theme: “Italian creativity, fashion and design”. More information, Sponsorship, RSVP and payment at http://www.italianculturalsociety.org/ PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE At our April 23 meeting, Towson U. professor John McLucas, introduced by UMD classics professor Judith Hallett, led us on a delightful tour of Roman buildings from the most ancient times to the present, as their materials were recycled from age to age, to construct new buildings contemporary to each age. Even the ancient Romans used this practice to construct their temples and other public buildings from older buildings…except for the use of a new material, concrete, a Roman invention, which was used to construct, for example, the dome of the Pantheon, with many layers beginning with denser to lighter concrete, and still standing intact after nearly 2000 years. We also tried to hold our board election, as required by our by-laws, but while there were nearly 55 people at the meeting, there was not a quorum (35) of members present, so we arranged to hold the election electronically. The results are now in, and your elected board members with a 2020 expiration date are: Ranieri Cavaceppi, Ellen Coppley, Luigi De Luca, Sara Forden and Paolo Vidoli. Our move to our spacious new headquarters is well underway, and by the time you see this newsletter we will be located at 4833 Rugby Ave., Suite 201.

  • Press Release Steve Hiett
PRESS RELEASE STEVE HIETT: BEYOND BLONDE February 13 – April 21, 2019 Opening Reception: Wednesday, February 13, 6-8 pm 10 Corso Como Gallery presents the first exhibition in New York of British fashion photographer Steve Hiett. Curated by Fondazione Sozzani, Beyond Blonde by Steve Hiett features many of Hiett’s renowned images and videos, as well as his Polaroid collages and silkscreens, shown for the first time in the U.S. The exhibition will be on view from February 13 – April 21, 2019. A reception for the artist will be held on February 13, 6 – 8 pm. For almost five decades, Steve Hiett has documented the changing world of fashion through his distinctive pop graphic, and even musical, imagery. Known for his vivid color style lit by using exterior flash, Hiett’s images are characterized by sharp, richly textured figures set against indefinable urban landscapes and radiant blue skies in deep focus. They tell stories, and the stories change with time. Whether it’s 1970s Miami, France in the 1980s, or New York at the end of the 20th century, Hiett creates an of-the-moment impression that feels neither contrived nor self-conscious. “Whether I take them in Paris or Miami, my photographs are middle-class stories of the suburbs; they’re about being alone and dreaming,” he said. Hiett’s work unveils an era of experimental fashion photography that emerged in the late seventies in the British, French and Italian magazines: “Things got simple....a camera and one 35mm lens. This meant I could travel light and keep things as simple as possible.

  • University Microfilms International 300 N
INFORMATION TO USERS This was produced from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material subm itted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Pagc(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing pagc(s) or section, they arc spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted you will find a target note listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It Is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.

You were a dancer, I believe, weren’t you, about how you came to be a dancer and you're initial experiences and anything you’d like to share. LK: Well, that’s pre-1945 [laughter] but Lilian Baylis said, just out of thin air when she introduced me to Queen Mary on the 22 December 1932, ‘Oh, and he’s going to join our ballet one day…’! I was flabbergasted! But if Miss Baylis said anything, it was so, so I thought, ‘Oh well, I’ll join their ballet’. And at this point Queen Mary, who I was chatting to, said, ‘Oh, if you’re going to do ballet, you must shake my hand…’, She drew herself up and put her hand out and shook, ‘…because I'm a pupil of the greatest dancer that ever lived: Marie Taglioni’. So, I thought that was lovely and she turned to go away, and then suddenly she turned back and said, ‘And that’s why I don’t have to wear a corset.’ [laughter] So, it was ordained by Baylis that I should be a ballet dancer, so I became one.
