In the shift to digital formats, we lost physical artifacts but gained data as a rich, but often hidden artifact of our music listening. The pair began working together as a team in 1975 and they quickly became Jamaica’s leading, and most distinctive, rhythm section. They have played on numerous releases, including recordings by U- Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Culture and Black Uhuru, while Dunbar also made several solo albums, all of which featured Shakespeare. They have constantly sought to push back the boundaries surrounding the music with their consistently inventive work. Dunbar, nicknamed ‘Sly’ in honour of his fondness for Sly And The Family Stone, was an established figure in Skin Flesh And Bones when he met Shakespeare. Dunbar drummed his first session for Lee Perry as one of the Upsetters; the resulting ‘Night Doctor’ was a big hit both in Jamaica and the UK. He next moved to Skin Flesh And Bones, whose variations on the reggae-meets-disco/soul sound brought them a great deal of session work and a residency at Kingston’s Tit For Tat club. Sly was still searching for more, however, and he moved on to another session group in the mid-70s, the Revolutionaries. This move changed the course of reggae music through the group’s work at Joseph ‘Joe Joe’ Hookim’s Channel One Studio and their pioneering rockers sound. -

Gently lunging melodies combine to produce a bustling tapestry of sound. Turn literally turns over its phrases, varying upon each repetition. Once I decided to dedicate this piece to my mother, an inveterate knitter, it struck me: that’s exactly what a turn is in knitting, a reworking on top of an already established stitched pattern! On a larger level Turn pushes towards build-ups that end each time with a literal turn in direction. This in a major way constitutes the modus operandi of the piece. -

March 23, 2012 Masters of Tradition celebrates the art of Irish music at the Annenberg Center “A terrifically enjoyable show—accomplished line-up...thrilling climax of galloping jigs and reels.” The Australian (Philadelphia, March 23, 2012)—In its American debut, Masters of Tradition, the ensemble comprised of seven of Ireland's most compelling musicians, brings the heart of Ireland to the Annenberg Center stage. Named for the music festival held each August in the Irish coastal town of Bantry, West County Cork and curated by renowned fiddler Martin Hayes, Masters of Tradition captivates audiences with intimate performances and dazzling instrumentals. The performance will take place on April 15, 2012 at 7 PM. Tickets are $20-$40 (prices are subject to change). For tickets or for more information, please visit AnnenbergCenter.org or call 215.898.3900. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Annenberg Center Box Office. A celebration of traditional Irish music in its purest form, the performance will showcase a variety of intimate solos, duets and trios as well as full group collaborations. The ensemble reads as a ‘who’s who’ in Irish music and includes vocalist Iarla Ó Lionnáird, fiddlers Martin Hayes and Cathal Hayden, guitarists Dennis Cahill and Seamie O’Dowd, accordionist Máirtín O’Connor and piper David Power. Artistic director Martin Hayes launched the Masters of Tradition Festival in 2002. "The goal of this tour is to focus on the nuances of Irish traditional music," says Hayes. "The performers are all masters of their instruments. Through their talent and abilities, the sophistication and artfulness of the music is revealed." Born in East County Clare, a part of Ireland renowned for traditional music, Hayes is lauded for his distinctly lyrical style. -

The launch of Loghaven Artist Residency is the culmination of years of planning, research, design, and input from artists, arts leaders, and the Alliance of Artist Communities. Developing an understanding of his creative practices and a familiarity with his aesthetic entails both a review of his personal narrative as well as its intersection with relevant musical, cultural, technological, and generational discourses. This study examines relevant groupings in music, art, and technology articulated to Perich and his body of work including dorkbot and the New Music Community, a term established to describe the generationally-inflected structural shifts! in the field of contemporary music that emerged in New York City in the first several years of the twenty-first century. Perich’s one-bit electronics practice is explored, and its impact on his musical and artistic work is traced across multiple disciplines and a number of aesthetic, theoretical, and technical parameters. This dissertation also substantiates the centrality of the piano to Perich’s compositional process and to his broader aesthetic cosmology. "In Iceland, everything revolves around nature, 24 hours a day," she told Oor magazine in 1997. "Earthquakes, snowstorms, rain, ice, volcanic eruptions, geysers … very elementary and uncontrollable. But on the other hand, Iceland is incredibly modern; everything is hi- tech." The Modern Things, a track from 1995's Post, playfully posits the theory that technology has always existed, waiting in mountains for humans to catch up. In fact, Björk has always seemed like an artist who's been waiting for technology to catch up with her. Finally, it seems to have done so. When Apple announced details of its iPad early last year, it acted as a catalyst for what would become Biophilia, Björk's seventh and most elaborate album, the title of which means "love of life or living systems". Along with a conventional album release, complete with music videos – at least one of which has been directed by Eternal Sunshine's Michel Gondry – Biophilia will also be released as an "app album" and premiered as a multimedia live extravaganza at MIF. Biophilia for iPad will include around 10 separate apps, all housed within one "mother" app. -
