  • Mining TV Twitter Networks for Adaptive Content Navigation and Community Awareness
Mining TV Twitter Networks for Adaptive Content Navigation and Community Awareness Hugo Hromic, Andrea Barraza-Urbina, Conor Hayes, and Neal Cantle Abstract In this work, we explore the potential of mining social media streams for extracting collective knowledge related to television (TV) programming. We pro- pose to provide near real-time online community awareness around a set of current TV shows being broadcasted, as well as an adaptive content navigation experience purely based on automatically updated social relatedness, to enhance the online tele- vision services and support the characteristics of modern television viewers. As an example, we take the case study put forth by Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), the na- tional public television and radio provider of Ireland. RTÉ also streams its content online and has a strong presence in the Twitter micro-blogging service. To support end-users in exploring the RTÉ catalog and understand what is happening in Twitter related to its programming, we developed the RTÉ XPLORER prototype. By using Adaptive Content Navigation and Community Awareness services, we aim for users to find interesting content faster and participate in an enhanced/richer social expe- rience around their favorite shows. The main contributions of this paper include an analysis of captured Twitter data, an in-detail description of the RTÉ XPLORER and the presentation of a functional prototype that showcases our system within the existing RTÉ streaming service. 1 Introduction The way we consume television (TV) today has changed. Our TV viewing experi- ence has shifted more towards the use of social media platforms. • An Ethnographic Analysis of an On-Line Buffy the Vampire Slayer Fan Community
ABSTRACT Title of Document: SUBJACENT CULTURE, ORTHOGONAL COMMUNITY: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF AN ON-LINE BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER FAN COMMUNITY Asim A. Ali, Ph.D., 2013 Directed By: Professor John L. Caughey Department of American Studies This dissertation presents an ethnographic analysis of the community of fans of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer whose members frequented the online linear posting board known as The Bronze. Buffy originally aired from 1997 until 2003, but the community that formed at the official Buffy fan site in 1997 continues on in real life and on line, having survived the end of Buffy and the closure of all three of its official posting boards. This study uses an interdisciplinary combination of textual analysis and ethnographic techniques (interviews, participant observation, autoethnography, cyberethnography) to ascertain the importance, relevance, and meaning of The Bronze community to its members, known as Bronzers. I argue that the nature of the linear posting board allowed Bronzers to form a unique and long-lived community by using The Bronze in creative and imaginative ways. In particular, language—to some degree appropriated from Buffy—was used by Bronzers to write a better world for themselves on line. Hence, the community is built on (and maintained by) language that is used in an unusually postmodern manner. As a group, Bronzers tend to be highly educated, literary, and artistic. To Bronzers, much of Buffy’s appeal was its emotional realism and imaginative depth. Unusually for television, these elements were combined with strong female leading roles, a cast of bookish and somewhat countercultural characters, and a foregrounding of emotionality and interpersonal relationships.

As transmedia storytelling one may understand it as a story told throughout different media, with exclusive content pointing back to the main narrative, working as a potential new audience entry-point. “Which transmedia elements of the Lost formula could be transferable to other cases?” is the research question proposed and in order to answer it, all Lost transmedia events and other marketing elements are discussed and analysed. Alternate Reality Games (ARG) were the main part of this transmedia strategy, counting five in total. Added to ARG, there were mobisodes/websodes and a pseudo- documentary. Beside the transmedia, the following marketing elements are also analysed: a video game, a web game-style narrative, official podcasts, and DVDs/Blu-rays. Fandom is also discussed, as it is inevitable to talk about a TV show success without touching the subject. Transmedia elements are analysed based on the very transmedia storytelling concept, (a) the medium utilised; (b) strategy applied/objective(s); (c) how much it affected the viewser’s knowledge compared to the main narrative; (d) where did the transmedia event led the viewser; and finally, (e) if this transmedia event could actually work as an inviting entry-point to new audience.
