Rochdale's 2020 Vision Helps Secure World Famous Exhibit Rochdale’s 2020 vision helps secure world famous exhibit One of the most famous museum exhibits in the world is heading to Rochdale as part of an unprecedented national tour. The Natural History Museum’s famous diplodocus skeleton ‘Dippy’, which has been seen by tens of millions of visitors since it was first presented to the museum in 1905, is leaving the museum for the first time to go on a tour of the UK, and Rochdale’s Number One Riverside has been selected as one of just eight host venues around the country. Rochdale Borough council’s award-winning customer service centre, office building and central library will welcome Dippy from February to June 2020 and will be the only North West stop on the tour. Rochdale was selected following a competitive bidding process, which saw 90 venues from across the country apply to host the iconic exhibit. The bid was submitted in partnership by Rochdale Borough Council and Link4Life, the Borough- wide Culture and Leisure Trust which manages the Touchstones Rochdale Museum and Art Gallery. The main aim of the tour, which is being supported by The Garfield Weston Foundation, is to use Dippy as a way of inspiring people to get involved in science and encourage more youngsters to study the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and take up careers in STEM industries. Cultural and educational activities focussed around the key themes of origins and evolution, sustainability and climate change and biodiversity will be put on at each venue to coincide with Dippy’s stay. Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for Culture, Health and Wellbeing at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “This must be the first time an internationally famous museum exhibit has been placed in a council building and I think it is fantastic. In doing this, both ourselves and the Natural History Museum are bringing the natural collection right to people’s doorstep and that is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our young people, many of whom would not be able to see these incredible artefacts in their usual home. “Rochdale might seem like an unconventional location for Dippy, but we have a compelling story to tell. As a place which was at the forefront of the industrial revolution, we inadvertently damaged the environment, but we are now leading the way in a sustainable development and our host venue Number One Riverside, which has a number of environmentally friendly features, is probably the best example of that.” Darren Grice, Head of Culture, Health and Participation at Link4Life, said: “At Touchstones Rochdale we are always looking for opportunities to excite, educate and inspire people through learning about our past and thinking about our future. These objects resemble jewels both in their exquisite lustre and in their hybrid status between nature and culture, science and art. This thesis asks how these jewel-like hybrids – including shiny preserved beetles, iridescent taxidermised hummingbirds, translucent glass jellyfish as well as crystals and minerals themselves – functioned outside of normative gender expectations of Victorian museums and scientific culture. Such displays’ dazzling spectacles refract the linear expectations of earlier natural history taxonomies and confound the narrative of evolutionary habitat dioramas. As such, they challenge the hierarchies underlying both orders and their implications for gender, race and class. Objects on display are compared with relevant cultural phenomena including museum architecture, natural history illustration, literature, commercial display, decorative art and dress, and evaluated in light of issues such as transgressive animal sexualities, the performativity of objects, technologies of visualisation and contemporary aesthetic and evolutionary theory. Feminist theory in the history of science and new materialist philosophy by Donna Haraway, Elizabeth Grosz, Karen Barad and Rosi Braidotti inform analysis into how objects on display complicate nature/culture binaries in the museum of natural history.

    MUSEUM FRIEND Newsletter for the Friends of Lyme Regis Philpot Museum Issue no. 29 January 2017 Registered charity number 278774 THE MARY ANNING WING: PROGESS REPORT from our Director, David Tucker So far, even with delays caused by the town centre being closed for a week in September, and technical troubles with piling eight metres into the ground, we are on schedule! The site now looks like a large Meccano set, as like many modern buildings it is being constructed around a steel frame. A flight of stairs is in place and the first floor’s metal layer (onto which the concrete floor is poured) is in place. This meant that after donning the safety gear – and overcoming my fear of heights – I walked out onto the first floor of the Mary Anning Wing. When one walks out to the seaward side of the first floor meeting room, the view is spectacular. A loo with a view….. Our architect has pointed out that the best view (eastwards) will actually be visible from the new toilet. Current plan is to allow volunteers access to the new first floor as soon as possible now that Christmas is over and 2017 is well and truly under way. ************************** What will the Mary Anning Wing look like? It will stand on the Museum’s terrace on the seaward side of the building. However, it will look very different as it will be built of zinc and glass. Traditionalists may well have a problem with that, but zinc is in fact an ideal material for coastal locations – it doesn’t slowly dissolve like the local limestone, nor does it rust as it has no iron content.

Never before on public display outside of the Natural History Museum, Dippy has delighted visitors since he arrived in London in 1905. He travels the length and breadth of the country from 10 February 2018 to late 2020. The British icon is on a mission to inspire five million natural history adventures, encouraging families and schools to explore nature on their doorstep. The paper will explore the history of dinosaur discoveries, their display methodologies in museums, and how pop culture, including movies and video games, have influenced museum displays and public perception over time. The lack of updated dinosaur exhibits in smaller local museums leads to disbelief, or an outright denial, of new information such as feathered dinosaurs. Entertainment, such as movies and video games that have non-avian dinosaurs as part of their presentation, are examined over the past thirty years to determine how accurate or inaccurate they are to the understanding of dinosaurs from their respective years.

    REPORT ON ITP MA CONFERENCE 2018 BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND by MATSOSANE MOLIBELI (ITP 2017, Lesotho) It was a great pleasure to be back to the United Kingdom - this time in Belfast, Northern Ireland - after a short space of time, thanks to the British Museum through the ITP and our sponsor, the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust, who have made dreams come true through their generosity. It was wonderful to reconnect with our ITP network and to meet new colleagues. The trip from Lesotho to Northern Ireland was wonderful irrespective of long hours in the plane from Joburg to Heathrow. What made it exciting was the empty seat that was available next to me to and from, this therefore made it possible for me to occupy two seats, hence I enjoyed the flight and was able to stretch my legs. The fact that it was not our first time in the United Kingdom although this time it was to Northern Ireland, made our lives easier to move around and we found shops that we could identify ourselves with, or rather shops we came with a list of things to look for from them. This happened on the day that we arrived – Saturday, we were able to locate Primark and we went there to quiche our thirst. Visits to Museums in Northern Ireland Ulster Museum Meeting staff of the Ulster Museum on Sunday especially Louise Smyth was very exciting. She was nice, friendly and welcoming, we were really at home with her and she treated us with a smile so we felt as if we have known her for quite some time.
