From the Principal's Desk It is with great joy that the eighth volume of our annual campus newsletter is being released. The pages of this bulletin bear testimony for the academic and non-academic activities of the 48th year of our college and also reflects the attempts made to impart holistic education for our students based on the vision and mission of our pioneers. (Dr. Sr. Kripa) Principal NEW VENTURES Inauguration of the Blessed Pope John Paul II block KARUNYAM, an outreach programme was coordinated by the NAAC coordinator, Dr.W.S.Kottiswari, with the Social Service League as part of post re-accreditation process. It is a continuous process organized with the intention of creating social awareness and commitment in the minds of the younger generation. Students, faculty members and non-teaching staff are actively involved in this programme contributing generously to buy provisions, blankets, adult diapers and cotton clothes for the inmates of the isolated ward, District Hospital, Palakkad. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Activities of the Department The activities of the English association for the academic year 2011-12 were inaugurated by Dr.Anto Thomas C. (Associate Professor, St.Thomas College, Thrissur.) with a talk on the topic „Native Culture and Ecotopica: Ecocriticism in children‟s Literature‟on 13 September 2011. 2 „Shakespeare week‟ was celebrated on the third week of November (From 21.11.2011 to 24.11.2011) with events such as a quiz competition, a recitation competition, a film version of Shakespeare‟s tragedy „Othello‟ and a poster exhibition. A One day Seminar on „Post structuralism‟ was organized by P.G. Research Centre for Comparative Studies, Department of English, Mercy College on 1 December 2011. Dr.B.Sreekumar, Head, CMS College, Coimbatore gave a talk on post structuralism for I and III Semester M.A students. The Research Journal „Pursuits‟ Volume IX was formally released by Dr.Sr.Kripa Principal, Mercy College, Palakkad on 9 December 2011. Dr.T.C.Brindha Kumari submitted a Minor project titled “Subjectivity, Gender and Self- Representation in Contemporary Tamil Dalit Writings- A Study of the Selected Works of Sri Lankan and Tamil Dalit writers Daniel, Dominic Jeeva, Sivakami, Bama and Edayavendan”. University nominee and Subject Expert, Teaching Staff Selection Committee for the appointment of regular teachers, NSS Colleges under Calicut University (2004 & 2008), Amal College of Advanced Studies, Myladi, Nilambur (2009), Unity Women‟s College, Manjeri (2010), and St.Thomas, Thrissur (2011). published an article titled “Negotiations on the Female Space: Gender Identity in Sivakami‟s The Grip of Change” presented at the National Seminar, St. Joseph‟s College, Irinjalakkuda, March 23-24, 2011, in the book of conference proceedings. published an article titled “Negotiating Female Space: Gender and Self - Representation in Siva Kami‟s The Grip of Change and Bama’s Karukku. Scholastic International Research Journal of Language and Literature” Ethiraj college, 2011, in the book of conference proceedings. published an article titled “Rewriting the Cultural Paradigms: Counter Narrative as a Discourse Strategy in Idayavendan‟s Fiction” in the Literary Explorer 2011, published by Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirappilly. published an article titled“Emphasis on Practical Outcomes: Negotiation on the Constructivist Approach to the English Language Teaching” at an international seminar-jointly organized by UGC SAP, and Institute of English and Centre for English Language Teaching, University of Kerala Thiruvananthapuram, 3-4 February 2011 in the book of conference proceedings. presented a paper titled “Gender and Self Representations in Bama‟s „Karukku‟” at Kongunadu Arts and Science College Coimbatore, 15 February 2011. presented a paper titled “Rewriting the Cultural Paradigms: Counter Narratives as a Discourse Strategy in Idayavendan‟s Fiction” by the Department of English, N.S.S. College, Ottapalam, 25- 26 August 2011. presented a paper titled “Negotiations on the Female Space: Gender Identity In Sivakami‟s The Grip of Change” at St. Joseph‟s College, Irinjalakkuda, 23- 24 March 2011. presented a paper titled “Beasts and Wilderness: Environmental Rhetoric in Darkness in Saint Louis Bearheart” at St. Paul‟s College, Kalamassery, 16 September 2011. Dr.W.S.Kottiswari Secured the UGC Travel Grant to present a paper on Redefining Motherhood –Theory and Literary practice at the Sixth International Conference on Motherhood on 29 March 2011 at the University of Queensland, Australia. acted as Resource person in the UGC National Seminar on “The Inner Vision… Psychological Insights in Contemporary Literature” at Nirmala College, for Women on 6 January 2011 and gave a talk on “Native Canadian and Indian Women Writers- A Psychological Approach” gave Extension lectures to PG students at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore on “Modern Schools of Criticism” on 7 January 2011. delivered the Valedictory Address at the National Level Seminar on “Images of Women in World Literature” on 15 February 2011 at Kongu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore. acted as Resource Person at the UGC National Seminar on Socio-Cultural Perspectives in English Literature on 17 February 2011 at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore and gave a talk on “The Confluence of Sociological Ideologies and Feminist Literary Discourses-A Comparative Study of Ethnic Women with Emphasis on Native Canadian Works”. 3 acted as Resource Person at the UGC National Level Workshop on Emerging Trends in New Literatures on 4 March 2011 at Avinashilingam Deemed University, Coimbatore and gave a talk on “ New Trends in Feminist Literature”. acted as Resource Person at the National Seminar on Emerging Trends in Literatures in English on 7 March 2011 at MSS WAKF Board College, Madurai and gave a talk on “Post Feminism and Literature”. acted as Resource person for the Refresher Course at Madurai Kamaraj University on 8 March 2011. and gave a talk on Modern Literary Theories and its Application to Literary Works. Ms Sheena John presented a paper titled “Struggle and survival in Louise Erdrich‟s Tracks” at a two-day National Seminar organized by the Department of English,N.S.S College, Ottappalam. Dr. Praseedha G was awarded the degree of Doctorate in English in 2011. Dr. Praseedha G. published a paper titled “Seeking a Middle Ground: An Analysis of Monica Felton‟s A Widow’s Story,” in Literary Explorer, Vol.10, No.4, October 2011, Research Journal, Bishop Heber College, Trichy. Ms Sreedevi K.Menon published a paper titled “ Nature and Non-Human Space in the “Mahabharatha”” in Pursuits, Vol.9 ,2011. Published a paper titled “Othello on Screen” in Littcrit.2011 Presented a paper in the International comnference on “Film Studies- Screening Othello-A comparative Analysis of Kaliyattam and Omkara” at Little Flower , Guruvayur. Dr.Nila.N presented a paper titled “Socio-Cultural perspectives in literature” at PSGR Krishnammal College For Women, Coimbatore on 17 February 2011 . Dr. Nila.N published a paper titled “May or May not be: Transcending Boundary Lines in The Shadow Lines by Amitav Ghosh,” in the national journal, JIGGYASA, Volume 6 No:1.2011. Ms.Y.Mercy Famila published a paper titled “Humanism in Dorris Lessing‟s Novels: An Overview” in The Indian Review of World Literature in English Vol.7.No.1 January 2011. Ms.Y.Mercy Famila published a paper titled “Pathos and Revolt:Resisting the absurd in Albert Camu‟s” the Plague”” in Unheard Melodies Vol 6. 2011. Anusha Mathew published a paper titled “ The portrait of Womanhood in TonniMorrison‟s Sola and Shashi Desshpande‟s That Long Silence: A Comparative Study of Feminist Ideologies” in the national journal, JIGGYASA, Volume 6 No:1.2011. Achievements of Students Aathira P of III year bagged the first prize in English Versification at A Zone competitions. Bhavana K S of III year bagged the first prize in Clay Modelling as well as in Collage, the second prize in drawing Cartoons and the third prize in Poster Making. Preethy C N won the II place in Margamkali at A Zone Competitions. Thapasree P, Geethu N, Reshmi D, Roseena Xavier and Shalini T V bagged the III place in English Drama at A Zone Arts Festival. Gopika G of II year has won the III place in Group Song in A Zone arts Festival. Hafsa HyderAli bagged the II prize in the Paper Presentation competition conducted by the Research Forum of Mercy College on 15 December 2011. DEPARTMENT OF MALAYALAM Activities of the Department Keralapiravi dinam was celebrated with a talk on the topic “The Keralite and the identity of the Keralite in Malayalam films” by renowned film critic Sri.G.P.Ramachandran. Dr.Rajeshwari.C presented a paper titled “Fluttering of Birds in Malayalam Poetry” in the international conference on Indian Ornithology conducted by the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore, in November 2011. DEPARTMENT OF HINDI Activities of the Department Revati Krishna of I B.A English, Mercy College, Palakkad has secured I prize in the District level Hindi Elocution Competition organized by Nehru Yuva Kendra, Palakkad in co-operation with the Department 4 of Hindi , NSS College, Ottapalam at NSS college, Ottapalam on 23 September 2011 in connection with the Hindi Fortnight Celebrations.
