Introduction – Comprehensive Strategic Partnership It is a great pleasure for me to be given an opportunity to speak at this inaugural international public policy conference, IN THE ZONE, organized by the University of Western Australia. I am delighted to have come back again to this beautiful city. As a matter of fact, immediately after I assumed the present post, I did visit Western Australia for my first official state visit in Australia as ambassador. The reason is obvious. Western Australia is most important for Japan. In this session, following the excellent tone-setting address by Minister Evans and the speech by Ambassador Zhang, I would like to speak about the bilateral relationship between Japan and Australia, focusing on recent developments, referring to the strategic importance of Western Australia. As you are all aware, the Democratic Party of Japan gained a landslide victory at the last general election and the new government led by Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama came into office in September. Prime Minister Hatoyama and Prime Minister Rudd have already met in New York at the United Nations General Assembly and at the G20 Summit held in Pittsburgh last September. 2 They also met at the East Asia Summit meeting in Thailand late October and will meet again at the APEC leaders’ meeting in Singapore later this week.

Introduction The Smart Freeways Project is an initiative to reduce northbound congestion on the Kwinana Freeway between the Roe Highway Interchange and the Narrows Bridge. This account of the development and achievements of the animal sciences in Australia is prefaced by a brief history of the livestock industries from 1788 to the present. During the 19th century, progress in industry development was due more to the experience and ingenuity of producers than to the application of scientific principles; the end of the century also saw the establishment of departments of agriculture and agricultural colleges in all Australian colonies (later states). Between the two world wars, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research was established, including well supported Divisions of Animal Nutrition and Animal Health, and there was significant growth in research and extension capability in the state departments. However, the research capacity of the recently established university Faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Science was limited by lack of funding and opportunity to offer postgraduate research training. The three decades after 1945 were marked by strong political support for agricultural research, development and extension, visionary scientific leadership, and major growth in research institutions and achievements, partly driven by increased university funding and

MR C.J. TALLENTIRE (Gosnells) [12.28 pm]: Thank you, Mr Speaker, and congratulations on your election to that position. As I stand here I am filled with a deep sense of the honour that has been given to me to represent the people of Gosnells in this Parliament. I am humbled to be an elected member in a Parliament that draws on the Westminster tradition, with its hundreds of years of crafting and refinement. I am also humbled and filled with a sense of connection and profound respect for the Nyoongah people. I consider them to be the traditional owners of this land. I also recognise the traditional owners of other lands across this state, and I recognise the thousands of years of custodianship they have held over this land. The electorate of Gosnells has a strong working class tradition. In my lifetime it has gone from being a semi- rural area to part of Perth’s south-eastern suburban corridor. We are now seeing more infill housing as people come to appreciate the area’s proximity to central transport infrastructure. Housing in the area is relatively affordable, and of a style that reflects the down-to-earth honesty of the people of my electorate. The area has an excellent selection of schools, strong sporting clubs, places of worship and other community facilities. My political predecessors have been significant contributors to the development of the area’s community assets.

    Health and Medical Sciences MeDeFacts www.meddent.uwa.edu.au Volume 23 | Number 3 | September 2017 Please be upstanding – a toast to the Medical School on its 60th anniversary and to all its alumni. From its jubilant beginnings in 1957, when 15 students completed their first year of medicine, to last year’s total of 253 graduands, the Medical School has flourished. Over the 60 years it has witnessed enormous talent and produced exceptional alumni, including a Nobel Laureate, ACs, AOs, AMs, Australian of the Year, Rhodes Scholars, world-renowned researchers, clinicians, teachers and administrators. Above all, it prides itself on its doctors who not only care for their patients, but about them, and give unstintingly of their time for their welfare in all arenas. It is well known that the Medical School only exists because of the generosity of the West Australian public who dug deeply into their pockets from 1955 to raise funds to establish it. These included community organisations, industry groups, professional groups, individuals and many others. Rural communities entered into the spirit and many farmers pledged part of their wool cut or crop – and now, of course, the Medical School boasts an enviable Rural Clinical School with 14 country sites. In this edition, we celebrate our alumni and the impact they have had on future generations of doctors, the health of the community and the progress of medicine. And UWA Pro Vice-Chancellor and Faculty Executive Dean, Professor Wendy Erber, casts a line into the future to see what the next 60 years might bring forth.
