Message from Revd Liz Hassall

What does the word Christmas bring to mind? Perhaps it’s a combination of all the best memories of childhood: stockings and chocolates and warmth and good food, or is it shopping? A lot of people say that Christmas means family, but sometimes Christmas is a time of sadness, bringing back memories too painful to bear*. Perhaps Christmas is genuinely about celebrating the birth of Jesus and giving thanks.

The pressure to do Christmas well seems to grow each year. The list of things to be done begins to grow and sometimes it becomes too much. We end up overwhelmed, unable to celebrate or relax due to the pressure of getting the next thing right.

For those of us involved in leading worship, doing Christmas well means helping others to find the Christmas they need in church. It means providing a safe and welcoming space where people can come to rediscover the timeless truth of the baby born in Bethlehem. It means singing the familiar carols in each village, reading the familiar readings. In doing this, each time I hope for one or two people to hear it differently, to discover how much difference it can make to take this timeless truth of the Baby Saviour and live in the light of the Christmas gospel.

I invite you all to join us in Church, escape the Christmas overwhelm for a little while, stop and listen to those familiar words and let Jesus arrive once again

* If Christmas is a difficult time, come to on December 19th at 6pm for the Quiet Service: a short oasis of peace and reflection, where no-one will require you to sing.

A verse to think about

In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be your strength. Isaiah 30:15

2 From the registers Our Church registers mark some of the most significant times in people’s lives. Each of these services involves an extended network of family and friends and is one of the ways that the Church connects with people outside our usual congregations. Please keep all these people, and their families, in your prayers. The Funeral of Lenny Leonard took place on Monday 4th November at . The Funeral of Mabel ‘Bet’ Burn took place on Thursday 7th November at Coxwold. The Funeral of Phyllis Clark took place on Thursday 14th November at Husthwaite.

The Village Link distributors in Husthwaite will be calling soon for your annual contribution to the Village Link, which will now be £5.

Carlton Husthwaite Church WANTED Clear glass jars for church project are still needed. Please leave in plastic crate inside Carlton church to the left of the door. Thank you to all who have already provided jars. The church is open every day and all are welcome to enjoy the peace and tranquillity within.

Important message to all contributors: The deadline for articles for February’s Village Link is the 15th January. Please send them to [email protected] Thank You. 3 IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GARDEN – III “Now look,” you say, “it’s all very well chatting on about your carrots and leeks and the Lord knows what else. But don’t you have any flowers in your garden? Anyway I don’t have any room for vegetables.”

In practice veg don’t take up much room. Our garden is, I suppose, short of half an acre. Our veg lie behind a fence (protection against rabbits) but share that space with soft fruit and an exceptionally large cess-pit. The veg area is only 5 yards by 10. I’ve just paced it out. Not much really and it feeds us most of the year round.

But that does leave alot of room for flowers. And my! don’t we have flowers! Alison, who loves her flowers, often quotes an old saying, “You have to put flowers where they’re happy.”

Which is fine, except that sometimes when we all look out onto our gardens we gloomily reflect that we haven’t put in nearly enough flowers. Or maybe we have sown some flower seeds but the wretched things won’t come up properly and the flowers that are happiest are the ones we haven’t planted. That is, what we call weeds.

As we all know, weeds are plants growing where we don’t want them, and we shall battle with them all our gardening lives. But don’t be too hard on them. Even in December we might see a weed in flower, a coloured shrub or just a shape that takes our fancy.

So, if this isn’t old news for you, here’s a challenge. Do all your Christmas decorations as usual but then go out into the garden a day or two before the 25th and pick a few things that seem to go together, weeds or not, and arrange them in a vase. You’re not a genius arranger? So what! When the family come in to their Christmas dinner, glow when you hear one or two of them saying, “Oo, that’s nice.”

Crayke Coffee Morning: Before I give news of the November coffee morning, I must thank Michael & Janet Pepper for their first coffee morning held in October. They had a splendid morning with a large crowd of people & raised £117 05 for church funds. We do hope they will feel like having another one in 2020! Today we have been at the Rectory with The Revd Liz who had laid on a feast for us, & lovely weather so we could enjoy the beautiful view. We were trying to fill the hampers for the December Coffee morning, where we have a variety of stalls & a large Raffle - food hampers, wines & spirits. The hamper soon filled with a wide variety of goodies & £51:20p was added to the church fund. Many thanks to Revd Liz. Crayke Sports Club and Village Hall Update Following a successful Presidents dinner at the end of September and torrential rain throughout October, it was with some reservations that we looked forward to our biggest annual event, the Bonfire! Despite difficulties parking because of the soggy fields it was our most successful event in terms of revenue and a big thanks must go to the volunteers who made soup, hot dogs, served drinks, stewarded the field and finally orchestrated the firework display. We are going to make it even bigger and better next year. (As our politicians are constantly telling us!).

In December, as well as the election on the 12th, we will be opening the club on the 21st for an evening of ‘Carols carols’ and Thornton’s pie & peas will be served. All welcome.

Plans for next year include opening the club to watch the “6 Nations’ Rugby matches and the European Nations Football Championship in summer as well as regular social events.

Finally, apologies to all those who were frustrated with parking on the road on the 5th but the fields were extraordinarily wet & the event does give a lot of pleasure to literally thousands.

Crayke Local History Group By the time you read this, we will have had our first public event of the Crayke History Group, on 28th November. However, for those who missed it you can now enjoy our new web site: www.craykehistory.uk

As previously stated, if you would like to get involved, and especially if you have any old photographs, records or even simply memories of Crayke, which you can show or lend to the group, please get in touch, either via the web site or by emailing [email protected]

Parking in Crayke Parking is an increasing problem in all villages as car numbers increase (and garages often get used as storage rooms!). Generally parking in Crayke is good, and respectful. Nevertheless much of the annoyance and frustration we receive via the Parish Council is due to a few examples of selfish and inconsiderate behaviour.

Therefore we would like to ask politely for your help and co-operation as follows: • Please don’t park on the pavements. Although this is not strictly illegal it is very annoying to pedestrians, especially the elderly, the disabled and those with children.

• Please try not to park in a continuous long line of vehicles, or opposite another parked vehicle, when it is possible to avoid this by parking a few yards further on.

• And please note it is illegal to obstruct a road or a right of access, such as a driveway.

• Finally, if you have guests, such as over the busy Christmas holidays, please ask your guests to park respectfully too.

Thank you, and may we wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and prosperous New Year.

As always for information on the above, or any Parish Council matter, please contact us: Chair: Colin Merritt: [email protected], or 01347 823983 Vice-Chair: Lesley Hartley: [email protected] Or contact any parish councillor, or the clerk: [email protected] Or visit our website www.craykepc.org.uk
