************ v ABSTRACf If the battle of Bir Hakeim was but one of many feats of arms during the Second World War, it particularly marks the memory of "Fighting France", because the exploit of the Free French Forces occurred during a period in which the Allies were having few successes on the Pacifie and Mediterranean fronts. Allied propaganda therefore celebrated this battle, thus attracting adherents to the cause of "Fighting France", and aiding general de Gaulle's French National Committee in obtaining recognition from the British and American governments. General de Gaulle's challenge was to keep France at war so that France would participate in the Allied victory, offsetting the Vichy's government's collaboration. The legendary epic of the Free French Forces at Bir Hakeim is an important part of the myth, and the reality, of "Fighting France". White the official memory of "Free France" still celebrates the unity of Frenchmen under the banner of "the Cross of Lorraine", the soldiers at Bir Hakeim could not forget the franco-french tensions they experienced. ************ CHRONOLOGIE SOMMAIRE vii Chronologie sommairel 1940 10 mai 13 mai Offensive allemande à l'ouest. • The Women Veterans of World War II
Hiding in Plain Site: The Women Veterans of World War II Gerri Wilson History 410 Dr. Halfond 2 Wilson Post WWII America settled in the cloud of the Red Scare, and the threat of a Cold War was pressing upon the nation. The Red Scare served to divide the nation by turning citizens against each other in America's fight against Communism and the Soviet Union. The world was drawn into the public sphere of influence of one of these two "superpowers". The women of post-World War II became unforeseen victims of the scare and the containment policies that followed, propelling them back to the private sphere. Anti-communist Congressional committee leaders became suspicious of anyone who was a liberal thinker or of suspected loose morals, someone who bucked the traditional values of the social norms, in other words the women veterans of WWII. Concerns about espionage and communist sympathizers prompted officials to initiate loyalty checks, and what was more loyal than the American housewife? Post-war Americans saw feminine stay-at-home moms cleaning, cooking, and taking care of children while masculine dads left home early and returned late each weekday, tending to their designated roles as lawnmowers and backyard BBQers on the weekend. They did not see their wives and mothers and daughters continuing as grease monkeys repairing planes or driving jeeps or ambulances in foreign countries. They needed their women to be lavished in soft full skirts and peterpan collars all soft and sweet. In addition, there was concern about women taking soldiers' jobs; worries about the effect on the family and anxiety about the breakdown of social values.

C2CC2CJOURNAL JOURNAL | JANUARY 2020 page 12 CONTENTS FUTURE OF CONSERVATISM SPECIAL SERIES: Part 1: The Enduring Appeal of Red Toryism PAGE 1 Ben Woodfinden C2C Journal’s name is a deliberate double-play on our central aspirations – to be read from coast to coast and to nurture important conversations between Canada’s conservatives. While we may not always get along perfectly, having just lost an entirely winnable federal election in which the Conservative Party topped the popular vote, now is a critical time to have a wide-ranging and civil debate about the future of conservatism in our beloved country. Ben Woodfinden kicks off C2C’s new special series on this important topic with a thoughtful essay about a Canadian political tradition that enjoyed plenty of success in our past, and deserves to be revived today. March or Die, Canadian-Style PAGE 9 Peter Shawn Taylor Few Canadians have any connection to our depleted military, fewer still enlist, and the number who consider joining a special branch of a foreign country’s forces that began as a way to soak up society’s dregs must be vanishingly small. Yet that was the path chosen by Joel Struthers, and his five years spent in the French Foreign Legion don’t seem to have done him any lasting harm. Peter Shawn Taylor shows that the historical aura of the kepi-clad brawlers still exerts a romantic tug on certain modern-day hearts in this fond portrayal of one Canadian’s life in the Legion and his remarkable work since getting out intact.

  • The WARRIORS WORE SKIRTS
The WARRIORS WORE SKIRTS “What is your name, sir?” Before the curious gambler and well- dressed spectators at the baccarat table received his reply, the ruggedly handsome tuxedoed gentleman with a British accent lights up a cigarette, one of 80 cigarettes he smokes per day. “Bond,” he replies with a sneer in a cloud of cigarette smoke. “James Bond.” Ian Fleming’s fictional British super spy was based on Fleming’s military service in the British Naval Intelligence Office during World War Two. Fleming also smoked eighty cigarettes per day, plus he and Bond used the same toiletries, loved to gamble and golf, and had an eye for attractive women. For the name of his super spy, Fleming asked and received permission, with gaiety, from one of his buddies, ornithologist (bird expert) James Bond. And 007? The same classification used to categorize the British breaking of the German diplomatic code in World War One. The adventures of Fleming’s James Bond found its genesis in a fertile imagination along with the exploits of at least 15 World War Two secret agents, none more so than Dusko Popov, code name Tricycle. Popov was a playboy, party animal, cagy super spy, and avid gambler. Fleming’s Casino Royale was based on Popov’s real life jaunt to Lisbon, Portugal during the war, with Fleming as his Intelligence escort. While gambling on baccarat at the Estorial Casino, Fleming watched in awe as Popov forced a rival at the table to fold after Popov bet $40,000, equivalent to $700,000 in today’s money.
