Signed Page 3 ABSTRACT This thesis considers the English parliamentary privilege of freedom from arrest (and other legal processes), 1603-1629. Although it is under-represented in the historiography, the early Stuart Commons cherished this particular privilege as much as they valued freedom of speech. Previously one of the privileges requested from the monarch at the start of a parliament, by the seventeenth century freedom from arrest was increasingly claimed as an ‘ancient’, ‘undoubted’ right that secured the attendance of members, and safeguarded their honour, dignity, property, and ‘necessary’ servants. Uncertainty over the status and operation of the privilege was a major contemporary issue, and this prompted key questions for research. First, did ill definition of the constitutional relationship between the crown and its prerogatives, and parliament and its privileges, lead to tensions, increasingly polemical attitudes, and a questioning of the royal prerogative? Where did sovereignty now lie? Second, was it important to maximise the scope of the privilege, if parliament was to carry out its business properly? Did ad hoc management of individual privilege cases nevertheless have the cumulative effect of enhancing the authority and confidence of the Commons? Third, to what extent was the exploitation or abuse of privilege an unintended consequence of the strengthening of the Commons’ authority in matters of privilege? Such matters are not treated discretely, but are embedded within chapters that follow a thematic, broadly chronological approach. -

This boundary, often referred to in the West as a ‘Chinese Wall’, is designed to uphold the inde- pendence of journalists from commercial interests or the whims of news proprietors. But does this separation still exist in today’s age of social media and at a time when news revenues are under unprecedented pressure? This article focuses on Twitter, now a widely used tool in the newsroom, analysing the Twitter output of 10 UK political correspondents during the busy party conference season. -

LIVER DISEASE: TO da Y ’ S COMP la C E NCY , TOMO rr OW ’ S C A T as T R OPH E The All-Party Parliamentary Hepatology Group (APPHG) Inquiry into Improving Outcomes in Liver Disease March 2014 About the All-Party Parliamentary Hepatology Group (APPHG) The APPHG is a group of cross-party MPs and Peers with an interest in liver disease. Its purpose is “to promote discussion of hepatology, including viral hepatitis and related public health issues, and to raise matters of concern with, and make representations to, government and other policy makers”. The Group is co-chaired by David Amess MP and Baroness Masham of Ilton. Jason McCartney MP and Virendra Sharma MP are vice-chairs of the group. The Hepatitis C Trust provides secretariat support to the group, helping to arrange meetings and to conduct research and write reports. The APPGH Inquiry Committee The APPHG Inquiry into Improving Outcomes from Liver Disease was chaired by David Amess MP, supported by Baroness Masham and the chief executives of two patient organisations, Charles Gore of The Hepatitis C Trust and Andrew Langford of the British Liver Trust. The analysis of the evidence and writing of the report was supported by Jane Cox of The Hepatitis C Trust. Today’s public servants have joined an undeclared public-private partnership with their future employers if, that is, they serve their future paymasters well. It is a unique service that begins and ends with the needs of young people and takes their support as its guiding principle on the value base, methodology and purpose expressed in Transforming Youth Work Resourcing Excellent Youth Services. By youth work we mean those practices which exist within the Youth Service as defined above which are developed by JNC qualified youth workers and those under their direction working part time or volunteering or in voluntary organisations. -

Under the terms of our new Charter, we are now required to publish an annual report for each financial year from the Remuneration Committee with the names of all senior executives of the BBC paid more than £150,000 from licence fee revenue in a financial year. These are set out in this document in bands of £50,000.
