Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir ’14 is a single vineyard wine from Te Mata Estate’s Woodthorpe Terraces vineyard, harvested on 30th March 2015. The unique ‘maceration carbonique’ fermentation, which enhances the vinification fruit and floral aromas of the wine, was used for 50% of the grapes. The other 50% received a traditional, warm, red wine fermentation. The resulting wines completed their malolactic fermentation and were matured for seven weeks in seasoned French oak barrels, before blending and bottling. A vibrant crimson with a bright purple edge, Estate Vineyards Gamay Tasting Note Noir ’15 has a beguiling fragrance of rose petals and crushed ripe raspberries, with a floral citrus blossom twist. The palate is refreshing, soft and rich, with an immediate delicacy. Plum, black cherry and notes of cocoa and French vanilla add to the wine’s charm and luxurious, velvet feel. It is a very special place for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and a host of other grape varieties planted there. It is located in Oregon’s newest sub AVA (American viticultural Area) of the Willamette Valley, The Van Duzer Corridor AVA. There are many factors that differentiate this area from those surrounding it. The primary factor is that the vineyards are directly affected by powerful and cooling winds from the Pacific Ocean that are funneled through a break in the mountains of the Coast Range. This cooling influence delays ripening and helps balance alcohol levels. Simultaneously the strong winds cause the grapes to develop thicker protective skins which impart flavor and structure into the finished wines. The unique soils at Johan help to balance the wines. There is a large amount of calcareous material found throughout the vineyard which helps keep acidities high and the wines bright.     M. LAPIERRE MORGON ILLINOIS MARKET ONLY The late Marcel Lapierre was an icon to artisan producers of top-quality Beaujolais. Working his vineyards near Villié-Morgon, in the Cru Beaujolais appellation of Morgon, Marcel began employing techniques that at the time were considered radical: organic viticulture, natural yeasts, minimal or no use of sulfur dioxide, unfiltered bottling. This style of production is often referred to as “à l’ancien” or “in the old manner,” and today has become widespread among quality growers. The results are wines of very pure fruit aromas and bright flavors, a wine that is slightly drier and a bit less alcoholic. The Lapierre wines are fruity and refreshing, yet more substantial and structured, with the ability to age. The domaine is now run by Marcel’s son, Mathieu, who continues to work according to the ideals of his father and the traditions he created. Ranging from 1400 – 2000 feet in elevation these low yielding vines are challenged by chalky limestone soils and afternoon blasts of cool marine air, a diurnal temperature swing of 40-50 degrees. Gamay Noir is the grape variety associated with Beaujolais in Southern Burgundy. Rarely found in California, Dr. Stanley Hoffman planted one acre of Gamay and 33 acres of Pinot Noir on the HMR Vineyard in 1964. Situated on the southernmost portion of the vineyard at the lowest elevation, it is cooler than the surrounding terrain. All Beaujolais style wines are not the same. Winemaker Jeremy Weintraub has made Adelaida’s first “Cru Beaujolais”. Cru Beaujolais is the term awarded to 10 villages that have the best terroir, meeting a higher standard than basic Beaujolais i.e. smaller vineyard yields and traditional barrel aging protocols. Previous Gamay wines at Adelaida have been in the “Nouveau” style producing a simple, fruity, drink now, celebratory wine, released a mere 7 weeks after harvest. Winemaking this year employed foot treading, stem inclusion, open top fermenting with punch downs and 14 months in neutral French oak barrels.
