2017 Fiscal Year Annual Report Our Mission

Transforming the lives of abused and at-risk children, young adults and families by empowering them to create new chances, new choices and new hope in a caring community.

Our Vision

To break the cycle of abuse and neglect by mending spirits and renewing hope. What We Do

Over 50 years of caring for Southern Nevada’s abused, neglected and abandoned children to offer hope, healing and ultimately break the vicious cycle of abuse.

I was once told “to whom much is given, much is required”. Working at St. Jude’s Ranch has afforded me the opportunity to be a teacher of life skills, a positive male role model and source of knowledge for those we serve. It has allowed me to be present in the lives of many who are in need of love and nurturing. It has also made me a better person and a better father.

Brian Franklin Senior Foster Care House Parent 11 years with St. Jude’s Ranch for Children Letter from Board Chair

Thank you once again for the opportunity to write this year’s Chairman’s letter. It has truly been a special year. St. Jude’s Ranch for Children serves the communities of Southern Nevada all the way north to Winnemucca. Also the vast majority of our funding comes from those same communities. Subsequently, we are answerable to the communities we serve. As Chairman of St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, I take great pride in reporting our progress.

From the beginning of the year to where we stand now is remarkable. In the world of organizations, whether for profit or not-for-profit, we create business plans and set goals. Hopefully we do the same in our personal lives as well. At some point in the future we measure our progress, and with much effort and good fortune, our successes outweigh any failures. When a great year is coming to an end, it’s a lot of fun to measure the progress. With all of that said, I don’t think we foresaw the great strides we would be able to make this year.

Our goals were pretty simple: Continue the reconstitution of our board, improve our relationships in the community and improve our Statement of Financial Position.

On the first goal, our board of trustees is now fully reconstituted. I am so proud to work with this team. The skills of our trustees are substantial but what is more impressive is how much this board cares. This is truly an active board. To a person, the board is vocal and motivated to provide the best working environment for our staff. Better yet we have new names soon to announce. We will make big news with these new members and their talents will make an immediate impact on our mission.

On the second goal, our standing in the community is better and substantially more noticeable. We have embarked on the process of reconnecting with our history and searching out those integral people that made us what we are today. The most common story that I hear now is someone welcoming us back and saying that they cannot wait to be involved with us again.

Just being better at our event coordination and reaching out to our donors has made a substantial impact on our financials. So for our 3rd goal, I am happy to report that our balance sheet is again stronger than it was a year ago Just being better at our event coordination and reaching out to our donors has made a substantial impact on our financials. So for our 3rd goal, I am happy to report that our balance sheet is again stronger than it was a year ago.

Looking forward and probably the biggest news of all is the return of Christina Vela to our organization. By the time this letter is published, Christina will be firmly entrenched in her new role as our Executive Director. As of this writing she has only been on the job for 3 weeks. I had so much fun vetting her for this position because I realized that most of our successful programs have her fingerprints all over them. When we announced she was returning to our organization it was as if we announced the favored daughter was coming home. The smiles on the staff’s faces made me feel that the board had really done the right thing. I anticipate great things from Christina, her energy and smile are both contagious and her ideas are big.

We have achieved so much in such a short period of time. St. Jude’s Ranch for Children really has just 3 goals now: Ensuring our stability so that we can always serve this community, to continue to improve operations and morale within our staff and most importantly, to be more impactful for more children and young adults in need. With regards to the 3rd goal of serving more children, you can expect that we are going to grow. We will be smart and measured in our pace but the board recognizes that this expanding community needs St. Jude’s Ranch for Children more than ever.

Sincerely, Lance T. Knight, Chairman St. Jude’s Ranch for Children

Letter from Executive Director

It is with great honor that I return to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children as the new Executive Director. St. Jude’s Ranch holds a special place in my heart as it does for many other people in Southern Nevada.

The services we offer at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children are specialized and tailored to help ensure they serve and meet the needs of all the children and young people that live at our Boulder City, Crossings, New Crossings campuses including our Child Focus siblings preservation program!
