The Berlin Botanical Garden is committed to the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) and conducts research, education and species protection to promote these goals. The Dahlem Seed Bank provides seeds on an exchange basis to other institutions that are also committed to these goals. The Index Seminum of Botanical Gardens has been a tried and tested tool for decades. The seeds are not for sale. They are only made available for research, teaching, education and conservation. Hints The seeds are stored in a drying room at 15°C and 15% relative humidity. Woody seeds are stored in the refrigerator. If you are looking for a species and cannot find it in the Index Seminum, you are welcome to send us a request. We store in our freezer a more than 9000 other seed accessions which are not published. Our Index Seminum contains seeds from sites in the wild as well as from the Berlin Botanical Garden. The seeds are from open pollination; hence hybridization is not impossible in seeds collected in the garden. Some of the species might be invasive and should be cultivated with special care. All determinations of the seeds offered in this Index Seminum have been verified and documented with a specimen in the Herbarium B. We are grateful for any information on possible misidentifications or seeds that do not germinate. The nomenclature of the European and Mediterranean plant species follows as far as published Greuter & al., Med-Checklist 1-4 (Genève 1984-2008), respectively “The Euro+Med PlantBase” (www.emplantbase.org/home.html), otherwise Tutin & al., Flora Europaea 1-5 (Cambridge 1968- 1993) or other critical regional floras. Author citations (until 1998 following Draft Index of Author Abbreviations, Kew 1980) from 1999 onward follow with few exceptions the standard list of Brummitt & Powell (Authors of Plant Names, Kew 1992). H. perforatum was determined to exist more abundantly in the research area in comparison with H. montbretii and H. origanifolium. While H. montbretii and H. origani- folium have black glands, H. perforatum lack such glands. Upon the examination of the root cross-rections, the pith was determined to be completely covered by xylem cells. As to stem cross-sections, it was observed that large parenchymatic cells were present in the pith of the young stems, while old stems were observed to have formed cavity in their pith. The species examined were determined to bear resemblance to one another in con- sideration of their leaf anatomy. Leaves are equifacial and amphistomatic and they have amaryllis type stomata. They are mesomorphic and there are schizo-lisigenous type secretion pockets in the leaves. Compared to adja- cent cells, stomata are anisositic or diasitic. Stomata on the lower surface of the leaves show higher frequencies than those on the upper surface.

It is cited as a highly productive oleaginous palm tree presenting high potential for biodiesel production. The aim of this work was to characterize and study the genetic diversity of A. aculeata ex situ collections from different geographical states in Brazil using microsatellite (Simple Sequence Repeats, SSR) markers. A total of 192 accessions from 10 provenances were analyzed with 10 SSR, and variations were detected in allelic diversity, polymorphism, and heterozygosity in the collections. Three major groups of accessions were formed using PCoA—principal coordinate analysis, UPGMA—unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean, and Tocher. The Mantel test revealed a weak correlation (r = 0.07) between genetic and geographic distances among the provenances reaffirming the result of the grouping.

  • Federico Selvi a Critical Checklist of the Vascular Flora of Tuscan Maremma
Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) Schinz & R. Keller, H. vasconicum Martrin-Donos, Onobrychis arenaria (Kit.) DC., Typha domingensis (Pers.) Steud., Vicia loiseleurii (M. Bieb) Litv. and the exotic Oenothera speciosa Nutt. Key words: Flora, Phytogeography, Taxonomy, Tuscan Maremma. Introduction Inhabited by man since millennia and cradle of the Etruscan civilization, Maremma is a historical region of central-western Italy that stretches, in its broadest sense, from south- ern Tuscany to northern Latium in the provinces of Pisa, Livorno, Grosseto and Viterbo.
