This exceptional canyon owes its name to a specific area which does not exceed a length of 80 meters. There the icy waters, which come from the steep mountain of Kaliakouda, in their attempt to become one with the waters of the river Krikelioti find an outlet from sources on the tops of the canyon creating beautiful waterfalls. However, their flow is not contiguous and compact, due to their great height. To the contrary, it breaks down into a wide radius to both small and large drops, creating a continuous artificial rain. The result is a breathtaking scenery! To reach the canyon you can choose between three routes. In all of them a certain distance must be crossed by car- a jeep is the ideal choice. After that you hike into the river to reach the Pantavrechi area. Rafting from noveber to may River rafting with an inflatable boat is a really fun and memorable experience. The rafting crew consists of 6 to 12 rowers in each boat which is directed by a professional river guide. To those who will do it for the first time we propose rivers with little difficulty while the more experienced rowers can try difficult rivers. The prerequisites are swimming skills, mental and physical health. Equipment You must have with you a bathing suit, a spare pair of shoes, a T-shirt and a towel. The review also includes suggestions for further areas that should be designated within the scope of these two Directives. Although the two Directives have different objectives, the areas designated as sensitive or vulnerable are reviewed simultaneously because of the similarities in the designation process. The investigations will focus upon: • Checking that those waters that should be identified according to either Directive have been; • in the case of the Nitrates Directive, assessing whether vulnerable zones have been designated correctly and comprehensively. The identification of vulnerable zones and sensitive areas in relation to the Nitrates Directive and Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive is carried out according to both common and specific criteria, as these are specified in the two Directives. 1.1 THE URBAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIRECTIVE (91/271/EEC) The Directive concerns the collection, treatment and discharge of urban wastewater as well as biodegradable wastewater from certain industrial sectors. The designation of sensitive areas is required by the Directive since, depending on the sensitivity of the receptor, treatment of a different level is necessary prior to discharge.

Water Management, expertise and techno- politics in energy and Agriculture in greece, 1940–2014: the case of the Acheloos river STATHIS ARAPOSTATHIS AND SERKAN KARAS INTRODUCTION on 19 January 2014, the journal Eleftheria (Ελευθερία), an historic press in the city of larissa at the heart of the prefecture of thessaly, published an article entitled ‘Acheloos: Wish or curse?’.1 the article reported the continuing conflict over the dams and suggested tunnels for the diversion of the river Acheloos. the renowned project of Acheloos’ diversion has been one of the major incomplete technological infrastructures in modern greece, and this debate has frequently featured both in the local and national press. since the 1970s it has been a contested project and an ongoing, technological, political and cultural struggle between supporters of the diversion (comprising communities of power engineers, hydraulic and civil engineers, farmers’ associations, local politicians and political parties in thessaly) and its opponents. there have been fierce legal battles and court cases ing reece and the european High court.2 Acheloos is the second longest river in greece at a length of 280 km and the one with the highest mean annual flow (137 3m /s).3 in greek mythology, Acheloos was the god and father of the living rivers and since antiquity the river’s history, function and role for the population of the adjacent regions and the environment has been part and parcel of the collective memory. the river basin is estimated to be 5,472 km2 and is located in Western greece, while the river crosses five different prefectures: Aitoloakarnania, Karditsa, Arta, trikala and evritania.
