A Chat with the DJ

Beginning his career in 1990, DJ’ing at some of the early Plymouth raves, Phil soon became household name in the South West, holding residencies at the Plymouth Warehouse with Cultural Vibes and later Scream. Playing across the UK as well as spots in Europe throughout the 90s, he shared line ups with some of the best DJs in the World, including Sasha and John Digweed, to name just a couple. Also dipping into production, he had several releases on the local Urban Collective label, as well as remixing tracks for labels such as Whoop!, Limbo and DMC. Now back as a resident DJ at Cultural Vibes in their new Hanging Gardens venue, Phil is still delivering seamless, technical mixes of the very best in current melodic house and techno.

MB.. You Have very kindly agreed to do a mix for the podcast but I feel its always good for listeners to get to know you a little with a 5 step Q & A.. So we know that you play the deep, melodic and progressive style but when did you start to DJ and what made you take the step from punter to player ?? (as in the DJ kind) PJ: I went to my first raves back in 1990, and the friend who took me was a DJ. We used to go back to his place afterwards where he kindly introduced me to the decks, and it was at one of these after parties that I suddenly got it and everything fell into place. Big thanks to Kevin Thomas!

MB.. If you can share one musical memory with us, as a DJ or punter, which has lodged itself in the memory bank, what is it?? PJ: Has to be the party at Botelet in Cornwall. Such a special night which I enjoyed as a DJ and punter in equal measure. Those who were there know!

MB.. Tell us about a significant moment in your Dj’ing career?? (A warm up slot for a name, release of a track, the moment we asked you to do a mix !!) PJ: Warming up for Sasha at the Plymouth Warehouse, which I was lucky enough to do a few times.
