  • Early History of Petroleum Exploration Offshore Norway and Its Impact on Geoscience Teaching and Research
NORWEGIAN JOURNAL OF GEOLOGY Vol 99 Nr. 3 https://dx.doi.org/10.17850/njg99-3-2 Early history of petroleum exploration offshore Norway and its impact on geoscience teaching and research Knut Bjørlykke1 1Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo. P.B. 1047, 0316 Oslo.. E-mail corresponding author (Knut Bjørlykke): [email protected] The Norwegian government and also the universities were unprepared for an offshore oil province. Very little information about the offshore geology was then available due to the thick cover of Quaternary and Tertiary sediments in the North Sea basins. The potential for oil and gas in the North Sea could not have been predicted before the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) was opened for petroleum exploration and drilling in 1965. Statements from the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) in 1958 that there was no potential for oil offshore Norway referred specifically to the coastal areas, where no oil has been found. The midline principle was introduced in 1964, through an agreement with the UK. A continental shelf committee led by Jens Evensen from 1963 to1965 prepared the legal aspects and the regulations applicable for oil companies applying for licences to explore and produce oil and gas offshore Norway. A proposal for a Norwegian petroleum-related research project in 1964 was not funded and it took several years before petroleum-related teaching and research were established. After several dry wells the Ekofisk Field was discovered late 1969–early 1970, making it clear that Norway would become a significant oil-producing country. However, at that time nearly all the expertise was inside the major international oil companies and petroleum-related research at Norwegian universities and research institutes had a slow start.

NYDAL Radiological Dating Laboratory The Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim, Norway INTRODUCTION This date list covers the period from September 1958 to December 1959 and a few earlier dates omitted from our first list (Nydal, 1959) . As regards C14 the geologic samples, the accordance between the age and the age predicted from geologic considerations is generally very good, and most of the dis- crepancies can be reconciled in favor of the C14 result. Particularly serious are some deviations that arise with samples of well- known archaeologic age. This is especially the case with charcoal from certain habitation sites, where the discrepancies exceed any possible systematic error (T-134 and T-136) . The explanation of such discrepancies has been rather difficult. Counter design.-Our laboratory has now two different counter designs and two electronic counting units for C14 measurement. Counter 1, described earlier (Trondheim I, 1959), has been used since we started with CO2 gas-counting in 1956. It is a proportional counter of stainless steel, with total volume of 6.3 liters.

Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 65, pp. 247-254. Oslo 1985. ISSN 0029-196X. Based mainly on stratigraphical data and information on sea-leve! and cirque glacier erosion rates, the age and processes for the formation of the Norwegian strandflat are discussed. It is concluded that the main processes are frost-shattering in combination with sea-ice transportation and planation during glacial stages in the last 2.5 Ma. E. • Thesis Is Mainly About the Dynamics of the Palaeo-Ice Sheets That Covered Scandinavia, Barents Sea and Svalbard During the Last Glaciation
Ice-sheet dynamics and glacial development of the Norwegian continental margin during the last 3 million years Dag Ottesen Department of Earth Science University of Bergen Norway 2006 Dissertation for the degree dr. philos 1 Abstract This thesis is mainly about the dynamics of the palaeo-ice sheets that covered Scandinavia, Barents Sea and Svalbard during the last glaciation. Morphological interpretation of regional and detailed bathymetric data sets on the Norwegian shelf from the North Sea (57˚N) to Svalbard (80˚N) has elucidated the ice-flow patterns along the western margin of the Scandinavian and Barents/Svalbard ice sheets. About 20 cross-shelf troughs with glacial lineations are interpreted as former pathways for fast-flowing ice streams. The two largest palaeo-ice streams were the Norwegian Channel Ice Stream and Bear Island Ice Stream, each 150-200 km wide at their mouths. Studies of large-scale margin morphology and seismic-reflection profiles have identified large submarine fans at the mouths of several major cross-shelf troughs. Improved knowledge of the regional development of the margin, and detailed morphological maps of the buried palaeo-surfaces, show that similar large-scale glacial processes have been active in a substantial part of the Late Pliocene/Pleistocene (c. last 3 million years). Interpretation of a large seismic data base has made it possible to map the whole Naust Formation, which comprises sediments deposited on the mid-Norwegian margin during the last 3 million years. During this period, large quantities of glacially derived material were transported westward from the Norwegian mainland and the inner parts of the shelf, and deposited mainly as prograding sediment wedges into a basin of intermediate depth offshore of Mid Norway.

  • The Norwegian Strandflat Puzzle a Geomorphological
The Norwegian strandflat a geomorphological puzzle HANS HOLTEDAHL Holtedahl, H.: The Norwegian strandflat - a geomorphological puzzle. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 78, pp. 47-66. Oslo 1998. ISSN 0029-196X. The strandflat between Karmøy and Bodø has been geomorphologically analysed, primarily on the basis of constructed hypsographical curves. By this method, height conditions and the rnaturity of the strandflat have been estimated. The general leve! of the strandflat is to a great extent related to the Late Weichselian marine limits along the coast from Karmøy to Frøya/Hitra, indicating a formation, closely connected to glacial isostasy, but with increasing maturity, reaching a maximum in the Smøla island area. Along the Helgeland coast, there is great discrepancy in height between the high Late Weichselian marine limits and the leve! of the low, and very mature, partly submerged strandflat. The horizontality of the Helgeland strandflat, and the peripheral parts of the strandflat farther south, must be due to denudation during stages of crustal stability, i.e. during interglacials or interstadials. The strandflat is polycyclic, and remnants of higher levels are present dose to the backwall in many areas, and also at some distance inside the fjords. The strandflat was most likely formed in Late Pliocene/Pleistocene times, i.e. during the last 2.57 Ma. It is thought to be a product of glacial erosion, marine erosion and subaerial weathering, where frost processes have played an important part. Conditions similar to the Late Weichselian must have been particularly favourable for the strandflat-forming processes. The pre-strandflat palaeo-surface has been reconstructed, and in some coastal areas where it nearly coincides with the present strandflat surface, the strandflat rnay represent an exhumed pre-Jurassic surface.

  • Ny Holtedahl
MINNETALE OVER PROFESSOR DR. PHILOS.
