Some people from CHAM deserve to be mentioned: without their help and encouragement it would probably have taken much longer for me to finish this thesis than what it did. Among these, my friend, colleague and “partner in crime” Margarida Rendeiro, my supervisor and mentor Prof. Ana Maria Martinho, and Prof. Rosário Monteiro for always believing in me and motivating me. I also would like to thank my friend and colleague Márcia Leão, for giving me a home in São Paulo and accompanying me through my research there. Finally, I would like to mention rappers Telva TVon, Mynda Guevara, Capicua, Samantha Muleka, Rose MC, Lívia Cruz, Keli Rosa and Sharylaine for generously sharing their experiences and thoughts with me. They have given me much more than just “study material.” This project would not have been possible without all these great women. JEE-NICE PRESENTS: HERE`S A LITTLE STORY THAT MUST BE TOLD Microphone Grandmistresses, Lady Def Jams, Battle Queens, Mixmistresses, Fly Emcees, Spinderellas from the late 70s to 1990. Enjoy & spread the word! This Booklet is dedicated to all the ladies who rock da mike and spin the turntables. This copied fan-mag tries to discover the story of female hiphop activity from the beginning of hiphop culture in the late 70s to 1990. There is a cut in 1990. It was difficult to draw that line, to decide which artists to include and which not. Yo Yo, Queen Mother Rage, Sister Souljah, BWP, Conscious Daughters are not in it because they are more 90s then 80s. Nikki D, Tairrie B. and L.A. Star are on the edge, but I included them, because they are more 80s. What I did was to collect all the lyrics and pictures, which I could find and republish facts which are important for making history. I didn’t want to write anything new, I wanted to collect, to see what you can find out (in Germany), if you want to. In the end it’s not much and nothing that was published in the german language. You will find the source material in an appendix, so that you can check out where it comes from and read more, if you want to. Pictures without numbers are from my own record collection. This compilation can’t be complete and some facts will be wrong, but I have tried to make it as accurate as I can.

Artistic Resistance in the Holy Land: ‘48 Palestinian Fiction and Hip-Hop DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Miriam Rudavsky Bourgeois Graduate Program in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee: Naomi Brenner, Advisor Alexander Kaye Johanna Sellman Ryan Skinner Copyright by Miriam Rudavsky Bourgeois 2019 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines two literary works and two rap songs by Palestinian citizens of Israel (‘48 Palestinians) that challenge the Jewish state: Emile Habibi’s satirical novel Saeed The Pessoptimist (1974); DAM’s rap song “Innocent Criminals” (2000); MWR’s rap song “Ashanak Arabi” (2001); and Sayed Kashua’s semi-autobiographical novel Dancing Arabs (2002). Habibi and Kashua participated in Israel’s mainstream literary scene: their two novels were read by contemporary Israeli readers and published by Israeli presses. The rappers of MWR and DAM participated in an underground ‘48 Palestinian rap scene in Israel: aside from MWR’s short-lived radio popularity, the selected rap songs were not consumed by mainstream Israeli listeners, played on Israeli radio, or produced by Israeli record labels. How can we account for these discrepancies? I suggest they are more reflective of attitudes within Israeli society than differences between the works themselves. As a result, factors such as genre (rap or literary text); candor (explicit or implicit critique); and language (Hebrew or Arabic) allow the artists to accomplish different things through their art. With a horizontal form of analysis that replaces more traditional hierarchical genre analysis with an emphasis upon the similar rhetorical force of both oral and written communications, I maintain that the “low” art of rap contains as much depth, substance, and nuance as the “high” art of written fiction.

How is it that a popular culture survived its perceived death and actually reconstituted itself in an attempt, although conflicted, to retain elements of its past and spread its art form globally? There is a distinct order that plays out in the way of performances by dancers.

Derecho EVANSTON, ILLINOIS June 2008 2 ABSTRACT Illegitimate Media: Race, Gender and Censorship in Digital Remix Culture Abigail T. Derecho In 2008, the term “remix culture” is widely understood to refer to mash-up videos and movie parodies, distributed on websites such as YouTube and authored primarily by white male teenagers. This dissertation argues that digital remix was invented primarily by African American men, who, in the mid-1980s, began using digital samplers to cobble together pieces (or “samples”) of existing recordings to form new sonic compositions, and by white American women, who, in the early 1990s, formed online communities on Usenet groups to share fan fiction (fanfic) – stories based on their favorite characters from television and film texts. In other words, digital remix culture was pioneered largely by communities that had long been (and continue to be) marginalized by mainstream mass media industries. Both digital sampling and online fan fiction were censored soon after they appeared. In the case of sampling, censorship was imposed from forces outside the music industry, by a New York District Court, which ruled in 1991 (five years after digital sampling began) that all unlicensed sampling was equivalent to theft. In the case of fan fiction, censorship was imposed from within fanfic communities, as peers’ negative reactions to explicitly sexual content caused writers to cease posting such content.
