With the Zanesville Museum of Art A resource for fourth-grade educators and students Zanesville Museum of Art Exploring Ohio’s History Through Art Getting to Know the Zanesville Museum of Art 1 Dear Fourth-Grade Instructor, Exploring Ohio’s History Through Art is a collaborative initiative between the Zanesville Museum of Art, Zanesville City Schools, and the Ohio Arts Council. This Teacher Resource Kit and the accompanying Student Activity Guide are tools that I hope will inspire and engage you and your students to learn about history though art. I also hope that this exciting resource provides you both enhanced access to the Zanesville Museum of Art and all the wonderful resources we offer educators and students, including our unique 8,000-object collection of two- and three-dimensional art that spans the ages and bridges continents. Our incredible museum staff are here to assist you along the way. This Teacher Resource Kit, which uses art from the museum’s permanent collection to illustrate key concepts, is intended to supplement and enhance fourth-grade curriculum and meets Ohio fourth-grade curriculum standards. Unique in-class activities and field trip experiences meet state curriculum requirements and foster a greater appreciation for art. Exploring Ohio’s History Through Art curriculum includes: Teacher Resource Kit Digital images of the art the students will explore, background information on those artworks, field trip summaries, and activity examples. Each unit comes with an additional resources section. Student Activity Guide Students can use the guide to take notes, jot down questions, journal, complete activities, and sketch. Source Materials list Zanesville Museum of Art Exploring Ohio’s History Through Art Getting to Know the Zanesville Museum of Art 4 Getting to know the Zanesville Museum of Art Zanesville Museum of Art Exploring Ohio’s History Through Art Getting to Know the Zanesville Museum of Art 5 This unit will: • Engage students with Zanesville Museum of Art (ZMA) staff. • Introduce students to the museum’s history and rules. • Prepare students for their museum field trips by introducing/reviewing vocabulary and concepts related to the artwork they will encounter. • Allow teachers and ZMA staff to discern what the students already know about art museums in general and ZMA in particular. • Give students the opportunity to articulate what they are excited about learning during the Exploring Ohio’s History Through Art program. • Demonstrate the connections the curriculum will make between fourth grade Visual Arts, English Language Arts, and Social Studies standards. The students will learn the Museum’s history and the special rules an art museum enforces to preserve its fine art collections. Let them know they will visit the museum several times; they will learn about art, and through art learn lessons in Social Studies. After the students take part in the three social studies units, they will complete a final art project that will be displayed at the museum. Ask students to open their Exploring Ohio’s History through Art Student Activity Guide to the Art Museum K-W-L chart on page 4. Have the students fill out the K section: What I Know About the ZMA and Art Museums. Discuss their comments. Then ask the students to fill out the W section of the chart: What I Want to Know About the ZMA and Art Museums. The ZMA staff member will answer these during their visit. Note that students will complete the L section (What I Learned About the ZMA and Art Museums), after they have visited the museum. Activity Two: Pre-curriculum Assessment Have students complete the pre-curriculum assessment to gauge what they already know. Results will be compared to a post-curriculum assessment. Activity Two: ZMA Staff Member Visit A ZMA staff member will visit the classroom to meet the students and share the museum’s history. They will also talk with students about the role art museums play in the community. The ZMA staff member will review art museum rules and etiquette with the students and explain why following the rules is essential. The ZMA staff member will discuss the questions from the students’ KWL charts. Activity Three: Art Vocabulary Tell the students that art, like any subject, has its own language or jargon. You will review special vocabulary words that students should be familiar with to increase their understanding of what they will see at the ZMA. Ask the students to take out their Exploring Ohio’s History Through Art Student Activity Guide and open to the Getting to Know the Zanesville Museum of Art Vocabulary activity on page 5. The terms are listed at the beginning of this lesson plan, and defined at the end of this unit. Go over the vocabulary for this unit with the students. If time allows, have the students guess what the words mean before you show them the definitions. Ask the students to fill in the vocabulary definitions as you go over the terms. Let the students know that there are additional activities in their Student Activity Guide to help them become more familiar with the new terms. A copy is attached at the end of this unit, and students will see the rules in their guide. Artist: A person who is skillful in creating works of art. Art Museum: A place where works of art are collected, preserved, and displayed for education and pleasure. Landscape: A work of art that shows land or the natural environment. Medium: The material used to make a work of art. Examples are paint, pencil, clay, pen and ink, and pastel. Portrait: A work of art depicting a person. A self-portrait is the artist’s representation of himself or herself. Still Life: A painting or drawing of objects such as flowers, fruit, food, or common household items.
