Ba sed on Lorca's "The House of Bernarda Alba", this ballet concerns five unmarried sisters (Las Hermanas) whose lives are dominated by their proud and tyrannical widowed mother. The eldest, and plainest daughter (heiress under her father's will) is being courted by a young man and tragedy develops wh en the jealous sister discovers this man's secret association with her youngest sister.

Three world-famous ballerinas from Russia, and France are presented at a gala performance which is distinguished by this, their first joint appearance. "Gala Performance" was first presented by the London Ballet in 1938 and its American premiere by The Ballet Theatre was at the Majestic Theatre, New York, on February 11, 1941.
