IJAPS, Vol. 6, No. 1 (January 2010) HAKKA CONSTRUCTION OF FEMININITY IN THE CHARACTER OF CHUNG PHIN-MOI IN THE FILM "CHINA, MY NATIVE LAND" Tenn Nga-I* National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), Taiwan. e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT "China, My Native Land", directed by Lee Hsing and released in 1980, was the first film that highlights the life story of Taiwanese Hakka writer Chung Li-fo (1915–1960) and his wife Chung Phin-moi (1914–2008). In reality the Chungs had challenged a contemporary Hakka taboo that couples with the same surname could never tie the knot. Throughout their lives they experienced ridicules, illness, death of a child and extreme poverty. Nevertheless they managed to stay together and remained in love with each other. On its debut the film was acclaimed a masterpiece of "Healthy Realism", a new trend of cinematic art of the 1980s. Reexamined two decades later, the film turned out a cultural product targeted advocating the Kuomintang (國民黨 KMT) pro-China policy and consolidating its rule of martial law. Furthermore, Phin-moi's image represented in the film goes through duplex distortion, first by her husband and next by the director with Chinese mentality. Illiterate, Phin-moi could not take the initiative of constructing her image either in creative writing or in film production. At first her husband described her personality. Afterwards the director based on his description to reconstruct her on the screen. In this light Phin-moi is exploited twice, first by Hakka patriarchy and then by Chinese ideology. Image construction involves complicated knowledge politics.

Prospective investors should be aware of the potential risks of investing in such companies and should make the decision to invest only after due and careful consideration. The greater risk profile and other characteristics of GEM mean that it is a market more suited to professional and other sophisticated investors. School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts When Tiger Mothers Meet Sugar Sisters: Strategic Representations of Chinese Cultural Elements in Maxine Hong Kingston's and Amy Tan's Works Sheng Huang This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University December 2017 Declaration To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgment has been made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signature: …………………………………………. Date: ………………………... i Abstract This thesis examines how two successful Chinese American writers, Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan, use Chinese cultural elements as a strategy to challenge stereotypes of Chinese Americans in the United States. Chinese cultural elements can include institutions, language, religion, arts and literature, martial arts, cuisine, stock characters, and so on, and are seen to reflect the national identity and spirit of China. The thesis begins with a brief critical review of the Chinese elements used in Kingston’s and Tan’s works, followed by an analysis of how they created their distinctive own genre informed by Chinese literary traditions. The central chapters of the thesis elaborate on how three Chinese elements used in their works go on to interact with American mainstream culture: the character of the woman warrior, Fa Mu Lan, who became the inspiration for the popular Disney movie; the archetype of the Tiger Mother, since taken up in Amy Chua’s successful book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother; and Chinese style sisterhood which, I argue, is very different from the ‘sugar sisterhood’ sometimes attributed to Tan’s work.

  • George Chun Han Wang Portare Il Sorriso in Tempi Che Cambiano: Il Cinema Comico a Taiwan
Ufeff13_Libro_ITALIANO_Layout 1 12/04/2011 10:01 Pagina 361 ASIA RIDE!

HEALTHY REALISM: PARADOXICAL AESTHETICS, IDEOLOGY, AND NATION- BUILDING IN TAIWAN CINEMA 1964-1982 BY MEI- HSUAN CHIANG DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Cultures in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Gary G. Xu, Chair Associate Professor Jose B. Capino Associate Professor Robert Tierney Professor Kai-Wing Chow Abstract This dissertation focuses on Healthy Realist Film Movement (jiankang xieshi dianying) and its influence on Taiwan cinema from 1964 to the rise of New Taiwan Cinema in 1982. Healthy Realism was first introduced to Taiwan film industry in 1964 by the Central Motion Picture Corporation (CMPC), a studio owned by the Chinese nationalist party, or the so- called Kuomintang (KMT). It claims lineage to postwar Italian Neorealist films, but purposely avoids realism’s dark and pessimistic themes. Current scholarship has often interpreted Healthy Realist Film as the KMT government’s propaganda tool; however, the historical approach tends to overlook the subversive voices and the melodramatic expressions exhibited in the actual film texts. Therefore, drawing on western melodrama study and feminist film theories, this project departs from previous scholarship to examine the melodramatic mode in Healthy Realist Film. It argues that the melodramatic mode was employed to reconstruct the postwar social order, and, at the same time, to provide an auto- critique of the cultural policies and social values proposed by the KMT government. This dissertation is consisted of four core chapters, each investigating the transformation of Healthy Realism at different stages during the 1960s and the 1970s.
