  • Antigonish Floodrisk and Erosion Climate Change Project
Antigonish Floodrisk and Erosion Climate Change Project The study commissioned by the Nova Scotia Department of Regional Economic Development and the Nova Scotia Department of the Environment By Dr. Tim Webster, Katie LeBlanc and Nathan Crowell Applied Geomatics Research Group, Centre of Geographic Science Nova Scotia Community College Middleton, NS B0S 1M0 & Acadia University, Wolfville, NS 1 Executive Summary The Canadian coastlines have been assessed for sensitivity to future sea-level change and it has been determined that the east coast of Canada is highly vulnerable to erosion and flooding. The third assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that there will be an increase in mean global sea-level from 1990 to 2100 between 0.09 m and 0.88 m (Church et al. 2001). The latest IPCC Assessment Report 4 (AR4) has projected global mean seal-level to rise between 0.18 and 0.59 m from 1990 to 2095 (Meehl et al. 2007). However as Forbes et al. (2009) point out, these projections do not account for the large ice sheets melting and measurements of actual global sea-level rise are higher than the previous predictions of the third assessment report. Rhamstorf et al. (2007) compared observed global sea-level rise to that projected in the third assessment report and found it exceeded the projections and have suggested a rise between 0.5 and 1.4 m from 1990 to 2100. Thus, Forbes et al. (2009) use the upper limit of 1.3 m as a precautionary approach to sea-level rise projections in the Halifax region.

CANADIAN MARITIMES 2016 19 June - 17 August 2016 SMART Canadian Maritimes Caravan 2016 19 June - 17 August 2016 Wagon Masters: Carl and Gwen Hopper Assistant Wagon Masters: Mark and Linda Avey The 2016 Canadian Maritimes Caravan started and ended in Hermon, Maine, and covered over 3,000 miles in the Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. We started the trip with 19 rigs but unfortunately lost one in Monc- ton, New Brunswick ,due to an accident. No one was seriously injured, but we had to continue on with only 18 rigs. Some of the highlights of this trip included the Bay of Fundy with 25-foot tides, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, rides on the Bluenose II and Amoeba sailing vessels, whale watching tours, and some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery in the world. Some of our group even took a day trip to Labrador, while others sailed out of St. Anthony, Newfoundland, to view icebergs and whales. We enjoyed many caravan-sponsored dinners with lots of lobster and other seafood. This was an amazing trip which was made even more enjoyable by the outstanding people who traveled with us. Many thanks to all who contributed time and effort to make this a truly memorable trip. • Antigonish County
Presentation to Law Amendments Committe e Bill No. 94 Good Morning Mr. Chairman, Members of the Law Amendments Committee : My name is Russell Boucher . I am a life-long resident of Havre Boucher, Antigonis h County, and I have also just been given the privilege to serve as the new Warden fo r Antigonish County . With me today is Pierre Boucher, newly elected Councillor for the Tracadie/Monastery area, Alan Bond, Municipal Clerk/Treasurer and Mr . Len Robertson, a strong community volunteer . First of all let me congratulate the good people of Shelburne and their MLA, Fisherie s Minister, the Honourable Sterling Belliveau; who through their efforts convinced this Committee to be here today to hear the electors concerns over proposed changes t o the Provincial Electoral Boundaries . The electors of Shelburne, much like many o f those in Antigonish County, were not given the opportunity to be heard prior to th e final report of the Electoral Boundaries Commission being released . Unfortunately ou r request to hold a similar meeting in Havre Boucher was turned down by th e Government. We therefore felt it necessary to travel here today and, on behalf of ou r Municipal Council and the electors of Antigonish County, we wish to convey ou r concerns over Bill 94 which provides for merging the area of Antigonish County, east o f the Tracadie River, with Guysborough-Sheet Harbour to form East Nova . We acknowledge the Commission had a daunting task before them . However, thi s process, in our opinion, has been flawed from the start.

WINTER Les Guédry et Petitpas d’Asteur 2021 VOLUME 19 ISSUE 1 GENERATIONS Our Winter 2021 edition of Generations highlights the Acadians of Massachusetts. If traveling to Massachu- setts, be sure to review the many sites there that have an Acadian connection. I found it amazing that a carved powder horn given as a gift by Acadians to a British farmer has survived to this day. Read about this group of Acadians expelled to Andover, MA and their relationship with Jonathan Abbott and the unique gift he re- ceived. In the Summer 2020 (Vol. 18 No. 2) issue of Generations we discussed the many museums and historic villages across the world that displayed our Acadian heritage. As expected, we did not capture every museum. Al Pettipas of Dartmouth, NS added another museum to our list – the Amos Seaman School Museum in Minudie, Nova Scotia near Amherst. Built in 1840 by Amos Seaman as a one-room school for his children and those of his tenants – likely including some Acadians. He also built the historic Unitarian and Catholic Churches on either side of the school. The museum contains many historic artifacts and documents preserving the history of the Minudie community which was an Acadian settlement from 1672 – 1755. In addition to documents identifying the Acadian residents in Minudie before 1755, the museum contains an original Acadi- an aboiteau found in the Minudie area in 1989, the original desks and furniture of the school and a model of an Acadian house. The museum is open in July and August from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm, seven days a week.
