LONG TERM PRODUCING & ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP 2020-2022 Producer: HBO Max’s Artist in Residence with Mo Willems This long term artist in residency aims to bring family and youth centered programming to the cutting edge of on-demand performance and entertainment platforms for stage and screen. As a long-time creative collaborator with Emmy- award winning writer, author, and illustrator Mo Willems, I work closely with HBO Max and Stampede Ventures to produce animated and live action series and other creative performance projects based on the stories and sensibilities of Mo Willems. HBO Max will release various original properties written by Mo Willems over the course of several years. As Mo’s dramaturg and producer, I contribute to script development, staging, and storytelling; I ensure a sense of

Alrutz 14 3 quality and consistency in writing, visual storytelling, and audience engagement. I support communications and production flow. (See Directing and Dramaturgy for specific upcoming television releases, scripts, and productions.)

2018-2021 Associate Producer: John F. Kennedy Center’s Education Artist in Residence Program with Mo Willems This two-year initiative at the John F. Kennedy Center develops new works and experiential programming for family audiences through intra-disciplinary collaborations. The performance work engages youth and families in meaningful, quality arts experiences and to challenge artists to collaborate across disciplines (art, music, dance, theatre). Over two years, the creative team is developing 8-10 significant programmatic events, including collaborations with the National Symphony Orchestra and award-winning musicians Ben Folds and Jessie Montgomery, a new musical based on Mo Willem’s award winning Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus books series, and a televised comedy special that features a line-up of high profile comedians performing, reading, and singing award- winning children’s books. In addition to developing and community-engagement programs, I helped develop an interactive story-based app for exploring the Kennedy Center’s campus and other interdisciplinary projects across the center. This large-scale initiative is the first of its kind in the nation and the team is developing innovative models for collaborations between visual and performing arts for families, youth, and visitors. As the dramaturg and/or director for each performance event and the associate producer for the Artist in Residence program at large, I am working to re-imagine how a national performing arts house such as the Kennedy Center will engage intergenerational audiences. My experience with creating new plays and productions, building interdisciplinary and community-engaged audience experiences, and working with youth remains central to this initiative.

2016—2020 International Partnership Director: The PaperBoats Artist Platform The PaperBoats is an artist-focused platform led by seven international partnership directors in the USA, New Zealand, Singapore, and . There are over 70 artists involved in the development of new works for very young audiences, ages 0-8. The inaugural project is a four-way co-creation partnership with selected communities of artist and organizations. By creating and sharing content across our partnership communities, with the foundation of PaperBoats’ creative practices and principles, we are progressively developing a number of theatre works that will premier in each partner country over the five-year period. The projects are experimenting with new methods for devising original theatre and experimenting with cost-effective ways to develop dynamic and sophisticated work for young audiences. Moreover, the platform is committed to mentoring artists who wish to experiment in making high quality theatre for the very young. This platform aims to raise the visibility and importance of arts experiences for our youngest audiences and the in their lives. This 5-year project serves a proof-of-concept experiment in global arts-based partnership efforts.

Alrutz 15 3 LONG-TERM APPLIED THEATRE PROJECTS 2014—Present Co-director: Patchwork Stories (with Fiona MacBeth) This Applied Theatre project investigates and performs what makes people turn toward each other instead of away. Supported by an on-going partnership between the UT Austin and the University of Exeter (England), Patchwork Stories is a practice-based research project in which artist-scholars gather community stories and position them as collective reflections and wisdom about some of life’s seemingly impossible questions. Each project develops an interactive performance installation that includes curated audio-stories, a participatory sewing circle, and facilitated storytelling experiences. I am researching and piloting various models for collecting community stories, connecting personal story to myths and other societal , and imagining how aesthetics work to build community connections and spaces for reflection about self, others, society.
