I SEE YOU SEEING ME An analysis of the relationship between invitation and participation in Theatre for Early Years Sally Chance BA (Hons), PGDip Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Creative Industries School of Creative Practice Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2020 I See You Seeing Me I See You Seeing Me – Nursery, 2018 2 I See You Seeing Me • Abstract Abstract Through a process of scholarly research in the field of performance studies, and artistic practice in the field of Theatre for Early Years (TEY), my Doctorate of Creative Industries had the goal of understanding the work involved in structuring and presenting dance-theatre as an encounter (Kelleher and Ridout, 2006; Fischer-Lichte, 2009; Heim, 2016) between professional performers and audiences aged three years and younger, in the company of their adults. The practice-led nature of the research contributes to TEY practitioner knowledge infrastructure by uncovering a fundamental aspect of TEY practice, namely an analysis of the relationship between the work of the performers and their performative material, and the experiences of the very young audience members for whom the work is created. I chose the term participation to represent multiple types of involvement by very young audience members. My research makes an explicit link between the structure of the performance work, the work of the performers and the observable actions of young children as co-creative participants. I suggest that young children’s responses to live performance encompass a complex and codifiable spectrum of activities, expressed in aesthetic intention in relation to the world of the show. -

Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community. -

A Victorian terraced house in a road with no trees. Inside, a cloud of acrid dust rises from the ground floor. Two workmen are demolishing the wall that separates the dining room from the living room. They sweat; they curse; they sing; they laugh. The floor is covered in plaster, wooden slats, torn paper and lots of dust. Dust hangs in the air. Upstairs, Aleks is hiding from the disruption. He is sitting at his desk. His partner Lia is on a train, travelling across the city to deliver a lecture at the University of East London. Suddenly, the phone rings. It’s her. And she tells him that Sarah Kane is dead. She’s just seen the playwright’s photograph in the newspaper and read the story, straining to see over someone’s shoulder. Aleks immediately runs out, buys a newspaper, then phones playwright Mark Ravenhill, a friend of Kane’s. He gets in touch with Mel Kenyon, her agent. Yes, it’s true: Kane, who suffered from depression for much of her life, has committed suicide. She is just twenty-eight years old. Her celebrity status, her central role in the history of contemporary British theatre, is attested by the obituaries published by all the major newspapers. Aleks returns to his desk. -

William Golding described writing his novel as ‘like lamenting the lost childhood of the world’. Our production remains true to the vision of the novel, but in keeping with Pilot’s style of performance, this show is dangerous, contemporary and exciting. This education pack offers resources that give an insight into the production and that explore the themes of the play. -

Introduction to Ecovenue Ecovenue Is a Signifi Cant Theatre-Specifi C Environmental Project Being Run by the Theatres Trust
Introduction to Ecovenue Ecovenue is a signifi cant theatre-specifi c environmental project being run by The Theatres Trust. It aims to improve the environmental performance of forty-eight London theatres and raise awareness of how to make theatres greener. Ecovenue is promoting the sustainability of theatres and the reduction of carbon emissions through the provision of free theatre-specifi c, environmental advice. The project started in 2009 and runs until 2012. Forty-eight venues each undergo an Environmental Audit, and receive a Display Energy Certifi cate (DEC) and Advisory Report. They track their energy use through SMEasure. Each venue receives a second DEC a year after their fi rst to measure progress. Ecovenue includes a ‘DEC Pool’ of performing arts venues across the UK that have obtained DECs. The DEC Pool helps us to evaluate the project and share best practice and information, establish meaningful benchmarks, and provide a better understanding of energy use of theatres. Any theatre can join the DEC Pool. The Trust’s Theatres Magazine provides quarterly reports on the participants and the work of the Ecovenue project. The Theatres Trust Ecovenue project receives fi nancial support from the European Regional Development Fund.
