www.alcornsports.com | www.facebook.com/AlcornStateSports | Twitter: @BRAVESSPORTS 5 Alcorn State University 2017 Volleyball Media Guide Chelsey Nicholas Head Coach • Second Season Chelsey Nicholas was named head volleyball coach at Alcorn State University before the 2016 season kicked off.

“I’m very excited to have her here. She’s taking over for a squad that is experienced, and we have a good team that needed some direction. I believe Coach Nicholas will come in and offer that for us and take us where we need to be as a program,” said director of athletics Derek Horne. “She brings in a level of discipline that will be the tipping point for the program.”

Nicholas was named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, anchoring the backline for Grambling State amid its championship run. A 2006 All-SWAC first teamer, she led the conference with 396 digs, highlighted by a SWAC season’s best 43-dig performance at Texas Southern (Oct. 27).

“I’m definitely excited to be here. I’m coming to show I have what it takes to make this program better,” Nicholas said. “The girls are hungry and have a passion is to implement some discipline, structure and belief for the game. I’m so glad to have a group of girls that that we can actually win and compete with anybody in actually have that. My goal for the upcoming season the SWAC. We have to believe that ‘work will win while wishing won’t.’ We have to have that mindset not only in the gym but in the classroom as well.”

After receiving her bachelor’s degree at GSU, Nicholas’ first coaching stints came as an assistant coach at Terrebonne High School (Houma, La.) and head coach of the Bayou Bandits, a Houma-based club team, in 2007. She was then hired as Houma Junior High’s head volleyball coach in 2009 before taking the same job at Riverside Academy (Reserve, La.) in 2011.

Also in 2011, Nicholas was named club director of the Louisiana Southern Swing Volleyball Club in the midst of immediate success at Riverside. She led the Rebels to back-to-back LHSAA Division IV semifinal appearances in 2012 and 2013. Nicholas spent this past year as head volleyball and track and field coach at East St. John High School (Reserve, La.).
