Their vast filmography is as diverse as the material that served as the bases of many of their narratives, including writings by Brecht, Hölderlin, Duras, Kafka, Pavese and Vittorini, as well as music by Bach and Schoenberg. Straub and Huillet often reinterpreted forgotten or overlooked classical works, investing them with a renewed polemical relevance. Their films bring stories of class struggle and resistance to the surface, examining post-war power relations and offering a critique of capitalism throughout history and across linguistic and territorial borders. Created with intense rigor, beauty and political commitment, each of their deeply inventive films demands our full attention at every moment, presenting cinema as something both surprising and necessary. Straub and Huillet’s films reflect the couple’s creativity and generosity, their solidarity with their collaborators, and their respect for language and nature. Critic Louis Séguin wrote that Straub and Huillet “belong to a non-hierarchical and frontierless clan of rebels, stateless persons and social misfits, and the challenge of their cinema matches this permanent irreducibility.” 88 Eldridge Street / 36 Orchard Street, New York, NY 10002 • 212.995.1774 • fax 646.688.2302 88 Eldridge [email protected] / 36 Orchard Street, New York, • www.miguelabreugallery.comNY 10002 • 212.995.1774 • fax 646.688.2302 [email protected] • www.miguelabreugallery.com MACHORKA-MUFF 1963, West Germany, 35 mm, B&W, 1.37:1, 18 min. Film by JEAN-MARIE STRAUB AND DANIÈLE HUILLET ABOUT THE FILM Based on “Bonn Diary” by Heinrich Böll. With Erich Kuby, Renate Langsdorff. Relishing his political and sexual prospects in postwar Germany, a former Nazi colonel muses on the stupidity of the bourgeoisie, who can be easily duped in the voting booth and in the bedroom. Straub and Huillet’s first released film is a powerful, almost surreal, distillation of Böll’s story, skewering the German soul through gallows humor, an interior monologue of calculation and cynicism, and a montage of jingoistic newspaper headlines. Straub would observe that the film is “built on the equation M [military] = M3 [murder].” [The] former Nazi officer enters the West German capital in triumph to lay the cornerstone for the Academy of Military Memories and is welcomed by the political, religious, and aristocratic elites. In interviews, Straub has referred to Machorka- Muff as the story of a rape—the rape of Germany by the military—whereas Not Reconciled is the story of the frustration of violence, since a German rebellion against twentieth-century militarism and Nazism never occurred. — Barton Byg CREDITS Ein bildhaft abstrakter Traum, keine Geschichte. NICHT VERSÖHNT ODER ES HILFT NUR GEWALT, WO GEWALT HERRSCHT (NOT RECONCILED, OR ONLY VIOLENCE HELPS WHERE VIOLENCE RULES) 1965, West Germany, 35 mm, B&W, 1.37:1, 55 min. Film by JEAN-MARIE STRAUB AND DANIÈLE HUILLET ABOUT THE FILM Based on Billiards at Half-Past Nine by Heinrich Böll. With Henning Harmssen, Ernst Kutzinski, Ulrich von Thüna. “Long live dynamite!” Straub and Huillet attempt to unmoor their audience by denying them the soothing reassurances of conventional storytelling, spatial continuity, or psychological explanation as they hopscotch across the chronologies of Heinrich Böll’s novel, moving freely between the Kaiser autocracy of the 1910s and the Adenauer economic miracle of the 1950s. In doing so, they chart the origins and legacy of Nazism, and the moral demands of obedience and sacrifice within the German bourgeois family. The film and the novel on which it was based concentrate a vigorous critique of German fascism and militarism, a memorial to the victims, and fragments of German history and domestic life over the decades as viewed through the kaleidoscope of a single day. The relation of history, time, and memory in Not Reconciled anticipates the dichotomy between word and image in Moses and Aaron: memory is invoked here by the lack of an image, by absence and paralyzed time. Not Reconciled traces the recovery of denied memories in three generations of a family of Cologne architects. The men have repeatedly subordinated their architectural skill to military purposes, at great human cost, and the grandmother, Johanna, commits a “terrorist” act to force a confrontation with this legacy. — Barton Byg CREDITS Anstatt der Eindruck hervorrufen zu wollen, er improvisiere, soll der Schauspieler lieber zeigen, was die Wahrheit ist: er zitiert. Bertolt Brecht. (Instead of wanting to create the impression that he is improvising, the actor should instead show what is the truth: he is quoting.) [Quote in opening credits]. BAMcinématek announces the world theatrical premiere run of Jacques Rivette‟s long-unseen, 13- hour masterpiece OUT 1: Noli me Tangere (1971) in a new restoration, Nov 4—19 “The cinephile‟s holy grail.”—Dennis Lim, The New York Times The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Aug 11, 2015—BAMcinématek announces the world theatrical premiere run of Jacques Rivette’s long-unseen masterpiece OUT 1: Noli me Tangere (1971), screening in a new DCP restoration courtesy of Carlotta Films US from Wednesday, November 4 through Thursday, November 19. The restoration and reappearance of Jacques Rivette’s legendary magnum opus brings this long- impossible-to-see, 13-hour masterpiece to the big screen. Over eight episodes shot on 16mm, a cast of French New Wave icons improvise a spellbinding tale based on Honoré de Balzac’s History of the Thirteen, involving two theater troupes rehearsing Aeschylus, a female con artist (Juliet Berto) who seduces her victims, and a deaf-mute (until he speaks) busker (Jean-Pierre Léaud) on a quest to uncover a mysterious secret society. As the characters’ paths crisscross and the film’s puzzle-box structure—including one 45-minute take—grows ever more elaborate, a portrait of post- May 1968 Paris and its dashed dreams emerges. The result is a cinematic experience unlike any other, in which, as Rivette himself put it: ―the fiction swallows everything up and then self-destructs.‖ An unfinished version of OUT 1 premiered at the Maison de la Culture in Le Havre in 1971 before being edited down to the four-hour OUT 1: Spectre.

Integral to this concept is the variable and highly subjective distinction made by various parties between “good” and “evil,” “right” and “wrong,” “us” and “them.” This thesis examines these concepts as they relate to the actions and manifestos of the Red Army Faction (die Rote Armee Fraktion) in 1970s Germany, and seeks to understand how its members became regarded as terrorists.

  • The Thrill of Cinema Lives at the Mole Antonelliana
THE THRILL OF CINEMA LIVES AT THE MOLE ANTONELLIANA Unique in Italy and among the most important worldwide, the NATIONAL MUSEUM OF CINEMA is hosted within the Mole Antonelliana in Turin, the symbol of the city. Inaugurated in July 2000, it has become one of the most visited museums in Italy, garnering much acclaim at an international level; a remarkable goal for a very particular museum, which proposes to charm its visitors by drawing them into the enchanting world of the Seventh Art. What really makes the National Museum of Cinema unique is the invaluable asset of its collections and the peculiarity of its layout, developed spiral-wise upwards and structured over several display levels, illustrating the history of cinema by alternating spectacular and evocative posters, objects, film fragments and set-staging, covering an overall surface of about 3,200 square metres. In planning the museum layout, François Confino did not only take into account the characteristics of the building housing it, but, as he followed Antonelli’s crescendo, he overlaid different levels of perception, combining the need for rigorous scientific foundations with the need for a spectacular presentation which aimed to reproduce and play with those fascination mechanisms at the basis of cinematographic depiction. The Museum preserves a considerable fund of rare and precious material, holding over 1,800,000 items, in many cases one-off pieces worldwide: its collections number 950,000 photographs, 530,000 posters and advertising material, 8,900 gadgets and film memorabilia, 8,950 devices and 10,850 artistic artefacts, 37,000 silent and sound films, 42,000 volumes, 138,000 brochures and magazines, 250,000 press clippings, 1,350 musical scores, 15,000 archive files, 37,700 titles in its video library and 4,800 film audio recordings.

FONDAZIONE PRADA PRESENTS THE EXHIBITION “K” FEATURING MARTIN KIPPENBERGER’S THE HAPPY END OF FRANZ KAFKA’S ‘AMERIKA’ ACCOMPANIED BY ORSON WELLES’ FILM THE TRIAL AND TANGERINE DREAM’S ALBUM THE CASTLE, IN MILAN FROM 21 FEBRUARY TO 27 JULY 2020 Milan, 31 January 2020 – Fondazione Prada presents the exhibition “K” in its Milan venue from 21 February to 27 July 2020 (press preview on Wednesday 19 February). This project, featuring Martin Kippenberger’s legendary artworkThe Happy End of Franz Kafka’s “Amerika” accompanied by Orson Welles’ iconic film The Trial and Tangerine Dream’s late electronic album The Castle, is conceived by Udo Kittelmann as a coexisting trilogy. “K” is inspired by three uncompleted and seminal novels by Franz Kafka (1883-1924) ¾Amerika (America), Der Prozess (The Trial), and Das Schloss (The Castle)¾ posthumously published from 1925 to 1927. The unfinished nature of these books allows multiple and open readings and their adaptation into an exhibition project by visual artist Martin Kippenberger, film director Orson Welles, and electronic music band Tangerine Dream, who explored the novels’ subjects and atmospheres through allusions and interpretations. Visitors will be invited to experience three possible creative encounters with Kafka’s oeuvre through a simultaneous presentation of art, cinema and music works, respectively in the Podium, Cinema and Cisterna.“K” proves Fondazione Prada’s intention to cross the boundaries of contemporary art and embrace a vaste cultural sphere, that also comprises historical perspectives and interests in other languages, such as cinema, music, literature and their possible interconnections and exchanges. As underlined by Udo Kittelmann, “America, The Trial, and The Castle form a ‘trilogy of loneliness,’ according to Kafka’s executor Max Brod.

TERRORISM IN GERMANY: THE BAADER-MEINHOF PHENOMENON Lecture delivered at the GHI, June 5, 2008 Stefan Aust Editor-in-Chief, Der Spiegel, 1994–2008 Recently on Route 73 in Germany, between Stade und Cuxhaven, my phone rang. On the other end of the line was Thilo Thielke, SPIEGEL correspondent in Africa. He was calling on his satellite phone from Dar- fur. For two weeks he had been traveling with rebels in the back of a pick-up truck, between machine guns and Kalashnikovs. He took some- thing to read along for the long evenings: Moby Dick. He asked me: “How was that again with the code names? Who was Captain Ahab?” “Andreas Baader, of course,” I said and quoted Gudrun Ensslin from a letter to Ulrike Meinhof: “Ahab makes a great impression on his first appearance in Moby Dick . And if either by birth or by circumstance something pathological was at work deep in his nature, this did not detract from his dramatic character. For tragic greatness always derives from a morbid break with health, you can be sure of that.” “And the others?” the man from Africa asked, “Who was Starbuck?” At that time, that was not a coffee company—also named after Moby Dick—but the code name of Holger Meins.
