Kirjeldades enda kogemust õppejõule, sain teada, et minu kogemus omas sarnasusi Bucke’i kosmilise teadvuse kogemusega. See küsimus viiski mind Bucke’i kogemuse ning kontseptsiooniga tutvumiseni. Richard Maurice Bucke’i puhul oli tegu 19. sajandi Kanada psühhiaatriga, kes on teadusajalukku läinud oma 1901. aastal ilmunud teosega “Cosmic Consciousness: A Study in 2 Õnneks oli mul kasutada poolteist aastat tagasi kirjapanud kirjeldus enda kogemusest, mille lauseehitust ma antud töö raames veidi muutsin 4 the Evolution of the Human Mind”.3 Teos käsitleb inimese teadvust läbi teadvuse kolme arengustaadiumi teooria, millest viimaseks on kosmiline teadvus. Liikudes internetiavarustesse, selgub, et Bucke on kuum sõna new age’i liikumises. Kirjutades otsingumootorisse “Bucke cosmic consciousness” annab Google 0,19 sekundiga mitu tuhat tulemust. Lehekülgi sirvides selgub, et Bucke’i kosmilise teadvuse olemuse üle arutatakse mitmetes foorumites, kus inimesed kommenteerivad ning räägivad nii oma kosmilise teadvuse kogemustest kui ka Bucke’i teooriast üldiselt. 3 Richard Maurice Bucke. Sellest tulenevalt on käesoleva töö eesmärgiks

Self- transcendence is defined as a decrease in a sense of self and a increase in unity with the world. It can change what individuals know and value, their perspective on the world and life, evolving them as a grown person. Consequently, self-transcendence is gaining attention in Psychology, Philosophy, and Neuroscience. But, we are still far from understanding the complex phenomenological and neurocognitive aspects of self-transcendence, as well as its implications for individual growth and psychological well-being.

ARVIND SHARMA Jean Paul LaPointe Faculty of Religious Studies McGill University September 1989 ABSTRACT Con tex tuai theories of language and experience have been introduced in religious studies at the end of the 1970's to undennine the thesis of a corn mon core in mystical experiences. Those theorics were used, a few deeades ago, to question the "objective" character of the modem sClentific methodology. A polarity of views has rcsulted from their introduction in the study of mysticism: on one side the proponents of the existence of a corn mon core of mystical experiences (or at least in the category of experience generally known as "introvertive"), and on the other, those who argue tha~ aIl experiences are "contextual", thus necessarily colored by the uaditional and cultural background of the experiencer. A brief review of the essential arguments of W.T. Stace and s:r. Katz, who respectively embody those views, is presented. We will then examine how the most consequential attempts to extract intelligible models from the mystics' testimonies have been reflecting, to a large extent, the philosophical assessments of l science. We will justify the approach of modern psychology in the general endeavor of erecting an integrated epistemologlcal model of human awareness, since this approach is better positioned to respect both the subjective contribution of the subject and the revised concept of obJectlvity in empirical methodology.

  • Unique Ethical Insights Gained from Integrating Gradual Practice with Sudden Enlightenment in the Platform Sutra—An Interpretation from the Perspective of Daoism
religions Article Unique Ethical Insights Gained from Integrating Gradual Practice with Sudden Enlightenment in the Platform Sutra—An Interpretation from the Perspective of Daoism Rongkun Zhang Hujiang College, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai 200093, China; [email protected] Received: 19 June 2020; Accepted: 13 August 2020; Published: 17 August 2020 Abstract: Since sudden enlightenment in the Platform Sutra is over-emphasized and gradual practice is comparatively ignored by quite a number of scholars, this article is primarily intended to illustrate that for Huineng, gradual practice and sudden enlightenment are practically integrated, which has profound ethical implications. Furthermore, it goes a step further to explore how gradual practice is made possible, by using original material in the text and by introducing relevant theory from Daoism. It also addresses the question about transcendence of morality that some scholars raise. Through exploring the topics of virtue and knowledge in Huineng’s thought with the help of Daoist wisdom, I aim to show that, as sudden enlightenment is accompanied by gradual practice, virtue together with knowledge appear hand in hand in a “perfect” form, which also strengthens the feature of perfection revealed in Huineng’s ethical doctrine. Keywords: gradual practice; sudden enlightenment; ethics; Huineng; Zhuangzi 1. Introduction Chan1, as a school of Mahayana Buddhism, grew from a comparatively unknown school to a significant sect during the eighth century. The founder of Chan Buddhism Bodhidharma taught the practice of “wall gazing” in order to attain enlightenment; thus he set the tone for the centrality of “meditation” in the development of Chan Buddhism.

Theology and Metaphysics in Sombre, Scientific Times Karl Svozil∗ Institute for Theoretical Physics, Vienna University of Technology, Wiedner Hauptstrasse 8-10/136, 1040 Vienna, Austria (Dated: July 2, 2019) In view of the sobering findings of science, theology and to a lesser degree metaphysics is confronted with a humiliating loss, and a need for reinterpretation, of allegories and narratives which have served as guidance to the perplexed for millennia. Future revolutions of world perception might include the emergence of conscious- ness and superhuman artificial intelligence from universal computation, extensive virtual reality simulations, the persistence of claims of irreducible chance in the Universe, as well as contacts with alien species and the abundance of inhabited planets. As tragic and as discomforting as this might be perceived for the religious orthodoxy and by individual believers, a theology guided by science may lead us to a better and more adequate understanding of our existence. The post factum theological options are plentiful. These include dualistic sce- narios, as well as (to quote Kelly James Clark), a curling or bowling deity, that is, creatio continua, or ex nihilo. These might be grounded in, or corroborated by the metaphysical enigma of existence, which appears to be immune and robust with respect to the aforementioned challenges of science. • Morality and Mysticism (Ethical Research of Ethics and Religion)
Goran Stojanović1 Review article Faculty of Philosophy UDC 316.74:[2-67+2-42] Banja Luka DOI 10.7251/SOCEN1305067S [email protected] Accepted: 01.06.2013. Morality and mysticism (Ethical research of ethics and religion) Abstract In classical ethical theory it is a customary to base morality with: revelation, evolution, utilitarianism, deontology, intuition and mystical experience. Th is article considers only the last foundation of morality, in a mystical experience. In doing so, mysticism is understood broadly, and it represents the identical experience, though diff erently expressed in the esoteric tradition of diff erent religions. Th e ethical problem is that such experience does not necessarily lead to morality. Looking mysticism in general, it is not justifi ed to use it for ethi- cal foundation of morality. Key words: mysticism, moralism, amoralism. Introduction Two basic positions of the relationship of mysticism and morality are mu- tually opposed. For one position that is an unsolvable confl ict: the inner qu- est leads to a complete neglect of the outside world. Neither eff ect can touch an unchanging ultimate reality, and so, no action is important. Confl ict arises between the moral and spiritual freedom - morality is also as amorality, the product of ignorance. As enlightened prisoner who returns to Plato’s cave, the mystic does not consider the value or the shadow from the world of any signi- fi cance. Th e best-known authors who advocate this view are: Arthur Danto, Martin Buber, Paul Tillich and Reinhold Niebuhr. Opposing to this is the only position that sees mysticism as compassionate and moral.

INTRODUCTION This evening I’m going to talk about a certain type of experience in which one feels united with the natural world or discovers some deep unity in the world. Let’s look at a couple of examples. The first one, reported by a young man, took place in natural surroundings: Suddenly in less than a second came this “feeling”: a knowledge of oneness with ocean, sky, fish, birds, everything. The “feeling” was soon gone, but the impression remained ever since. It was not intellectual or emotional, but the feeling of certainty was there beyond all other feelings. I am surer of this than of anything else in life. It left a deep happiness which lasted for some hours. All was completely impersonal. “I was not there at all” is one way of expressing the “feeling”. I have used the words oneness, happiness, certainty, and so on, but all are imperfect expressions – ludicrously so, of what I had experienced. At this time I had not read of mysticism, but later when I did, I was much interested to read of similar experiences. (From Light of All Life, Raynor Johnson) Some phrases here refer to features that are pretty typical of the experiences: • ‘suddenly in less than a second’ The experiences often do come on very quickly, although there can be more gradual build-ups.
