i American Rhapsody ' By Joe Eszterhas

Hailing Bill Clinton as the “Rock and Roll President,” Joe Ezsterhas (a former Rolling Stone writer) examines every erogenous detail of the scandal that mired the later years of Clinton’s presidency. Heavily based on facts, American Rhapsody scrutinizes every aspect of the scandal, offering incredible insights into the early lives of all the players involved. Taking a little artistic license, the author even assumes the voice of a few, creating some of the most absurd, and hilarious, soliloquies ever penned. Offering some intriguing social commentary, Ezsterhas’ American Rhapsody is a must have for any political nut, comedy enthusiast, or rock and roll fan. 14 The Cowl Arts & Entertainment October 23,2003 Move over, Luda got somethin’ to say comes back out of the dirty south with Chicken N Beer, a self-predicted hit album complete with Snoop and Chingy

She does the wash, tends the land, and makes the pigs’ food as if it is second nature— which for Josie, it is. Duclos is able to take what is one of O’Neill’s most difficult tasks, and she combines the hard-working, headstrong Josie with the naive and caring person that lies inside every woman who loves (even the fircest personality has a soft soul deep within, as Sullivan makes sure to make us understand). This is by no means an easy role, and Duclos does her part well. As her unlikely companion, Sullivan also accurately captures his role. Sullivan, too, has multiple levels to his role; by day he is the pretentious landlord, and by night he is the swaggering drunk. Though at first we think Sullivan is too conceited to be a friend of the Hogans, his charismatic manner is contagious—we, like the Hogans, somehow grow attached to this distorted man. Sullivan has us questioning right until the very end of the play how his character plays in the clever schemes and manipulations concocted between the characters. But there is one question that both Duclos and Sullivan leave unanswered. I left the theater not completely convinced of the connection between Josie and Jim. Where was it? This is a big problem. The bond between Josie and Jim is the focal point of the whole second act (Trinity Rep opted to combine O’Neill’s second and third acts into a one and half hour second act—which was too long, no matter how moving it might have been).
