Want to know the real truth? Serra Head Baseball Coach Craig Gianinno invites student-athletes and their parents to a Q&A panel discussion from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 8 in the Serra Auditorium – all Padres are welcome! The purpose of this evening is to provide a deeper understanding of the college recruitment process. Recruiting is all about building relationships. It does not happen overnight, and it will consist of a number of different situations in which a recruit communicates with a college coach. What are some of the most popular majors for athletes on your team? Find a list of schools that fit you academically and athletically Athletics/Recruiting What are college coaches looking for in a player? What is your recruiting timeline? Scholarship How many scholarships do you have available at your university each year? What types of academic scholarships are available? What about other sorts of grants and aid? College Life Questions What is the housing situation like? Do teammates typically live together? What is a typical “day in the life” like for a member of your team during the season? Talk to players – learn about the daily routines of each program Our guest speakers will include: Greg Moore University of San Francisco Associate Head Coach National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA Division 1) Moore has enjoyed noted success especially with left-handed pitchers. Former USF players Derek Tate, Scott Cousins, Aaron Poreda and Matt Lujan all came to the Dons as undrafted players out of high school, later going on to become a freshman All-American (Lujan, 2008); West Coast Conference Co-Player of the year (Cousins, 2006); first-round draft pick (Poreda, 2006); and 34th round pick (Tate, 2004). Poreda, who was picked by the White Sox with the 25th selection in the draft, was the highest pick in program history. Most notable was Kyle Zimmer, who was picked fifth by Kansas City, the highest pick in the 106-year history of baseball on the Hilltop. Mike Neu University of California Assistant Coach National Collegiate Athletic Association Division (NCAA Division 1) Neu is a former Major League Pitcher for the Oakland A’s and the Florida Marlins. He currently is the pitching coach for the University of California Golden Bears. Prior to his new position, he was the head baseball coach at Diablo Valley College. He has been an associate scout for both the Kansas City Royals and the Atlanta Braves. In addition to playing for the A’s and the Marlins, Neu played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds. John Norfolk Cal State East Bay Assistant Baseball Coach National Collegiate Athletic Association (Division 2) Norfolk enters his second season as an assistant coach for Pioneer baseball after serving two years as a volunteer assistant at the University of San Francisco from 2008-10. As an assistant coach for the pioneers, he works with the pitching and catching staffs, assists with recruiting and strength and conditioning, and oversees academics. During his time at USF, Norfolk supervised a pair of catchers who signed Major League Baseball contracts. Before coaching at USF, Norfolk caught for the Dons from 2002-2007. A first-team All-West Coast Conference selection as a senior in 2007, Norfolk finished his career batting .315 with 121 hits. Gabe Ribas Santa Clara University Recruiting Coordinator and Pitching Coach National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA Division 1) Ribas is Santa Clara’s new pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. He was a pitcher in the Big Ten Conference and the Minor Leagues. In addition, he has coached college baseball for the past five years. Ribas has enjoyed noted success, especially with left-handed pitchers. He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 14th round of the 2002 Major League Baseball Amateur Player Draft and was named 1998 Maine State Player of the Year by USA Today. Doug Williams College of San Mateo Head Baseball Coach California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Williams, whose Bulldogs have averaged 32 wins per season since 1995, enters his 19th season as head coach. In 2012, he guided the Bulldogs to a 32-12 record, a 17th trip to the Northern California State Playoffs, and an 11th Coast Conference Championship in the past 18 years. One of his most memorable experiences was when his first team at CSM claimed the 1995 Coast Conference National Division Championship. The Bulldogs posted a 38-11 record in Williams' first season, setting a school single-season record for victories. His eighteen-year record at CSM is 540-218, and he is a seven-time recipient of the Coast Conference Coach of the Year Award, most recently winning the award in 2009. During his tenure, 204 out of 213 players have transferred to four-year schools or signed professionally. Ryan Allgrove (Serra, ’08) 2008 West Catholic Athletic League Player of the Year honors Student-Athlete Allgrove led the CSM Bulldogs to California Community College State Baseball Final Four, where CSM finished as the state runner-up for the fourth time. He posted a .352 batting average during the 2010 season, recording 40 runs, 51 hits, six doubles and three triples to go with 18 RBI and 18 stolen bases in 21 attempts. At Serra, he served double-duty as a shortstop and pitcher during a three-year high school career. Serra won three straight WCAL championships. Allgrove finished a stellar senior season as the WCAL Athletic League Player of the Year and was a Cal Hi Sports All-State selection for two years in a row. Other honors included the San Mateo Times Player of the Year and the California Baseball Coaches’ Association Junior All State North-South Series participant. Justin Maffei (Serra Class of ’09) 2012 All-West Coast Conference Student-Athlete Maffei is a centerfielder at the University of San Francisco. The speed demon led USF in multi-hit games with 18, including 144 games with two hits. Maffei was the CSM Dons’ offensive catalyst in his first year in Green and Gold. He finished first on the Dons in nine offensive categories and was ranked among the top five in the WCC in five categories. Maffei finished first in the WCC in stolen bases (24 of 29 attempts), 11 steals in front of the second place finisher. Maffei led Serra to a WCAL first-place finish in 2009. .
