He Was Trustee and president of board of trustees of Delaware Literary Institute for many years in 1835 in Franklin, Delaware Co., NY. DELAWARE LITERARY INSTITUTE

In 1835 an effort was made to obtain an act incorporating an institution of learning, to be located at Franklin, and on the 23d day of April, 1835, the Legislature passed such an act, the school to be called the Delaware Literary Institute. Daniel Waterbury, Isaac Platt, Ichabod Bartlett, David Dewey, Elihu McCall, Joseph H. Merrick, Orator Blakesley, William Betts, Asahel B. Roberts, Amos Douglas, Joseph P. Parsons, Harvey Mann, Beriah Bowers, Cyprean S. Smith, Wills C. Ripley, Harvey Parsons, Herman D. Gould, Ozias Waters, Thaddeus Mather, Benjamin B. Eells, Ebenezer Penfield, Samuel A. Law, William H. Downs, and Jacob S. Fitch and their successors were constituted trustees. Measures were then taken to procure subscriptions for the purchase of a site, and to erect a suitable building. The sum of $7, 000 was soon subscribed to purchase fifteen acres of land for a site, and to put up a building; and on the 5th day of May, 1835, the board of trustees voted to erect a stone building, eight fee long, forty feet in width, and four stories high. Elihu McCall, Osias Waters, Harvey Mann, James P. Parsons and Amos Douglas were appointed a committee to superintend its erection. The contract for the building was given to Wills C. Ripley. On the 17th of February, 1836, Miss Mary Downs of Colchester, was employed as principal instructress of the ladies' department. She was the first teacher employed, and was to receive a salary of $150 and board. She taught the first school of the institution in a private hall before the institute building was completed. Miss Catharine L. Upham was appointed her assistant. On the 24th of August, 1836, the board of trustees appointed Rev. William Frazer principal teacher of the institute, to commence the school in November, 1836, at a salary of $600 a year; and in October, 1826, Miss Emily Downs was appointed assistant teacher. Charles O. Waters and Adam Craig were appointed assistant teachers in the male department; Waters at a compensation of $10.50 a term, for two hours instruction

39 each day; and if Rev. Mr. Frazer should need more assistance, Mr. Waters was to assist him three hours a day for $12.50 a term. At the first meeting of the board of trustees, Isaac Platt was chosen president; William Betts, vice-president; Amos Douglas, Secretary, and Harvey Mann, treasurer.

In April, 1838, institution was placed under the superintendence of the regents of the University of the State of New York; and in August, 1838, the first memorial was presented to the regents for an amount of money equaling an amount raised by the trustees for the purchase of a library, as allowed by statute. The purchase of books had before been only by the voluntary contributions of the public, by which a very respectable library had been collected. On the 8th of October, 1838, Mr. Frazer having resigned his position as principal of the school, Silas Fitch, Jr. was employed as principal, the avails of the term of bills to be his compensation. In January, 1849, Roger Case having resigned his seat as president of the trustees, Harvey Mann was appointed to his place. In November, 1839, the contract with Prof. Fitch was so altered as to allow him to receive the money drawn from the State by the regents of the university. In April, 1841, Miss Mary A. White, of Walton, was appointed assistant teacher in the female department, at a salary of $250 a year.

On the 30th day of April, 1837, Dr. Seymour C. Wilcox was chosen secretary of the board of trustees, in place of Hon. Amos Douglas, deceased, who had for more than twenty-two years correctly and faithfully discharged the duties of clerk of the board, and given his influence and energy in support of the institution. Harvey Mann, continued to act a president of the board to 1865, when Dr. Albert E. Sullard was elected in his stead. Harvey was elected as Town Clerk in 1841/2 in Franklin, Delaware Co., NY. Timothy SABIN, who united with the church Aug. 4, 1833, was made an elder two years later, has ever since been a pillar, first in that organization, then in this, and who is still spared, though at an advanced age. This venerable patriarch is held in high esteem by all who know him, and his long and active career has ever been marked by a truly Christian spirit.

In 1841 he was in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY.

The following is a column of business cards from the "Oneonta Weekly Journal," of July 1, 1841. It is nearly a correct showing of what the business of the village was then.

Headquarters at the foot of Chestnut street. New Fall and Winter goods. Timothy SABIN is now receiving a fresh supply of Spring and Summer Goods, comprising a general assortment of Dry Goods, Groceries, Crockery, Hardware, Dye Stuff, Paints, Oils, etc., etc. for sale as low as at any establishment west of the Hudson river. Before 1878 he was in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY.

An honored pioneer is Timothy SABIN, who came from Pauling, Dutchess county, in 1811, and located on premises now owned by Delos YAGER. He began mercantile business in 1831, and for nearly ten years conducted a large business. He has two sons living, E. R Sabin, in the village, and C. B. Sabin, of Galveston, Texas. The latter is an ex-judge of the supreme court of Texas, and a leading attorney, and the postmaster in Galveston. Mr. Timothy is now past the Scriptural age of "threescore and ten," but still retains much of his youthful vigor, and vividly related incidents of "Auld Lang Syne." He died on 23 Jun 1878 at the age of 75 in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY. Timothy had an obituary in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY.

Oneonta Harold & Democrat: 6/23/1878 TIMOTHY SABIN. Another of the pioneers of Oneonta has died. During the night of June 24th, the spirit of Timothy Sabin took its flight, just how and at what hour, God only knows. The evening before he was in usual health, and Tuesday morning dead. From the appearance of his features and body when discovered, it was evident that he died without a struggle. His lite went out, yielding to the circumstances of old age and a finished course. Timothy Sabin was born at Pauling, Dutchess co., in 1803, and was consequently 75 years of age. In 1822 he married Willmet VAN DYKE, of Mayfield, in this State. She died May 17, 1827, aged 22 years. February 14th, 1828, he married Harriet MANN, daughter of Daniel Mann, of Franklin. She died June 15, 1865. During his early residence here, and for a few years in Davenport, Mr. Sabin pursued the avocations of farmer, clerk, hotel-keeper and merchant. In 1842 he retired from the

45 mercantile business, and from that date until about 1875, conducted an extensive commission business, his son, Egbert R., being a partner during considerable of the time. Mr. Sabin built the store now owned by George REYNOLDS, and one or two houses. He was more instrumental than any other Oneonta person, excepting only the late E. R. FORD, in promoting the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad project. Although never holding any official connection, his energy, good management and encouragment had much to do with its building. Mr. Sabin was converted under the ministrations of Rev. Augustus LITTLEJOHN, became a member of the Presbyterian church in 1833, and was made an Elder two years later, which position he held until some eighteen months ago, at that time, of choice, becoming merely honorary. In church, Mr. Sabin has been a zealous worker, and as a Christian gentleman, prayerful and constant in religious duties. In the esteem of his neighbors and fellow-townsmen, Timothy Sabin might properly have been regarded our first citizen. During the years of his strength, he was with the first in everything that pertained to the welfare and prosperity of his town. Without a particle of selfishness, he devoted time, work and money to promote public enterprises, and Oneonta is the better and more prosperous because of his living in it. His exalted Christian character, his charity, his kindness, his devotion to all things good, made him a man to be missed by those who cherish Christianity, a high condition of public morality, and good order. His name will ever be associated with the noblest of our dead, and it is strange indeed if there are not those yet living who are endeavoring to emulate his virtues, and are pressing on to a better life because of his example. (Timothy Sabin is buried in Riverside Cem. in Oneonta)

KENDRICK UTTER

"Kendrick Utter, an enterprising and substantial agriculturist and stock raiser of Grant township, is the owner of one hundred and twenty acres of rich and arable land, eighty acres of which constitute his home place on section 14. He is likewise numbered among the early settlers of Taylor county, having taken up his abode within its borders in 1875. His birth occurred in Madison county, New York, on the 17th of December, 1852, his father being Palmer Utter, who was likewise born and reared in the Empire State. His mother bore the maiden name of Julia Mann. Palmer Utter was actively identified with general agricultural pursuits in New York and in that state all of his children were born. In 1855 he removed westward to Iowa, settling in Louisa county, where he opened up and developed a farm, to the cultivation and improvement of which he gave his attention throughout the remainder of his life. Subsequent to the death of his first wife he was again married, his second union being with Caroline Thorpe. Kendrick Utter, who was but three years of age when he accompanied his parents on their removal to this state, remained on his father's farm in Louisa county until he was married at the age of twenty-two years. In 1875 he came to Taylor county, taking up his abode on the farm where he now resides on section 14, Grant township. He first purchased and broke a tract of forty acres of raw land and erected thereon a small house, in which he made his home for several years. Subsequently he bought another forty-acre tract adjoining and later added (page 525) to his landed holdings by purchasing forty acres in another section. He also owns a half section of land in Canada. On his home farm he has erected a commodious and substantial residence and a large barn and also planted a grove and orchard, setting out peach and apple trees. The attractiveness of the place is greatly enhanced by evergreen and ornamental trees. Mr. Utter has a wind-pump on each of his farms and his neat and well improved property is the visible evidence of his life of well-directed industry and perseverance. In addition to cultivating the various cereals best adapted

50 to soil and climate he also devotes some attention to the raising and feeding of hogs and likewise conducts a dairy business. As the years have gone by his capable management and energy have brought to him well- earned and justly merited success and he is now widely recognized as a prosperous and representative citizen of the community. On the 10th of March, 1875, in Louisa county, Iowa, Mr. Utter was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth J. Sutherland, who was born, reared and educated in Canada. Prior to her marriage she successfully followed the profession of teaching in that country and also in Louisa county, this state. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Utter was born one child, a son, who died in infancy. Since age conferred upon him the right of franchise Mr. Utter has supported the men and measures of the republican party but has never sought nor desired office as a reward for his fealty, preferring to give his undivided attention to his business affairs. His religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Baptist church, while his wife belongs to the Methodist Episcopal church at Clearfield. He has now made his home in this county for more than a third of a century and has lived to see a remarkable transformation as pioneer customs have been replaced by the evidences of a progressive and advanced civilization. Little pioneer homes have been replaced by the commodious and substantial residences built in modern styles of architecture, trees have been planted and the native prairie grasses have been replaced by all the cereals that are cultivated by the farmer today. In all the work of general improvement Mr. Utter has borne his part and well deserves mention in this history." Page 307 He appeared in the census in 1880 in Grant, Taylor Co., IA. "Special to The Hartford Times." Hebron, February 2, 1933 Mrs. Helen White observes event with reception to relatives and neighbors. "Enjoy the best of Health." Recalls Early School Days and Simple Amusements of Past Generation. Mrs. Helen White, who observed her 90th birthday today, was born February 2, 1843, in East Hampton Ct. Her father Benjamin Ackley Hills, and her mother, before her marriage was Lovina Archer. Her Grandmother, Lucina Archer, lived to be a hundred years old. Mrs. White began to go to school when only two and half years old, so that her sister Melissa who was not quite five would have company on the way to school. She has been told that the teacher, Amanda Brainerd, used to fix a place on one of the benches for her to have a nap every afternoon. Mrs. White recalls riding across Lake Pocotopaug to sleigh many times with her father when the lake was frozen, and tells of the keen delight the trips gave her. Mrs. White became a member of the East Hampton Methodist Church when she was about 18. Mr. Hills and his family used to take their lunch on Sunday, attend the morning services, and Sunday School, eat lunch and stay for the afternoon service, return to the farm for supper and to do the farm chores, then drive back to church for the evening prayer meeting. When asked if they didn't get tired on Sunday, she replied, "We didn't go anywhere during the week and so we were rested when the next Sunday came.

53 There were no bridge parties then." Singing School Days The Hills family lived about three miles from East Hampton, and sometimes winter evenings when the snow lay deep on the ground the ox sled was used to carry a load of young people to singing school at the center. Mrs. White remembers helping her mother make tallow candles before candle molds were invented. The candles were made by hanging a number of wicks over a stick, and dipping them into a kettle of hot tallow until they were the right size. If her mother wanted to sew in the evening she lighted two candles for her sewing stand. Burning two candles at the same time was considered extravagant unless absolutely necessary. Soap for toliet purposes was always Castile, but for all other uses soft soap was used. This soap was made on the farm by leaching a barrel of ashes and combining the lye thus obtained with any grease. Even the rind from ham and bacon was saved to be used in soap making. Leach stones, now no longer used, may be found on many of the old farms. In those days little girls were taught to knit and to sew. When Mrs. White was about ten years old her mother taught her to knit stockings. She had to knit around the stockings a certain number of times in the forenoon, and as many times in the afternoon, before she could go out to play. She laughingly tells how she and her sister Melissa used to take their knitting to a neighbor's house. This house had a lighted stairway. The little blue eyed Melissa and brown eyed Helen, would sit on the top stair, knit around once, move down a step, and so continue until the bottom stair was reached. Worked in Factory After her father married Jane M. Frisbey, Mrs. White went to work for Bailey and Brainerd who manufactured coffin trimmings in Cobalt. Mrs. White says she sometimes walked home Saturday afternoons, a distance of seven miles, and thought nothing of it. When visiting her sister, Mrs. Flavel Jones, who lived in Hebron, she heard much about Turnerville and the silk mills located there, and decided to leave Cobalt, and go to Turnerville (now Amston) which she did when she was about twenty-five. It was there that she met Edward White, who was the head dyer and whom she married about three years later. While working in Turnerville she sometimes walked to church at Hebron village and sometimes Mr. Turner would hitch up a pair of mules and take several girls who worked for him to church. Mr. and Mrs White lived in Turnerville for about two years, and then bought a small farm near Burroughs Hill where they lived until 1894, although Mr. White continued to work in the dye house. Saw Airline Road Opened While they were living in Turnville the first train went over the Airline Road, and they with others went to the meadow to see the train which had stopped there. This was about 1873. Mrs. White has five children, all of whom are living. Her husband died in 1921. Her own brothers and her sister died a few years ago, but she has three half sisters and four half brothers living. she attributes her longevity to the simple life that she has led. Lives in Isolated Place In 1894 she came to the old Kellogg place to live. This place is far from neighbors and surrounded by lovely hills and valleys. Many days the only signs of life are the rural mail carrier and the flocks of blue jays and juncos that come for their daily feed of corn and oatmeal. Many people visit her, attracted not only by the charming spot, but by the hospitality of the gential, youthful old lady herself. Her hair is not yet white. Her hearing is perfect, and her eyes are bright with the spirit that never grows old. she takes a keen interest in life and declares that she doesn't wish to live when she gets so that she cannot work. She not only assists with the housework, but sews a great deal. She has always been interested in making quilts, and now that she has more leisure, has recently made seven quilts, one for each daughter and each granddaughter, also two which she has given to friends. At present she is making a "Butterfly" quilt for her own. A reception from 1 to 3:30 was held at her home today attended by relatives, neighbors, and friends, to whom were served refreshments, her daughters assisting. Last Saturday Henry Kellogg and H.H. Armstrong of Hartford a vice president of the Travelers Insurance Co., also George Leavit and Kirk Kyle of New Britain called to offer congratulations.
