Early 19Thc Daniel and Coalport Porcelain Prices at Auction Ceramics To the left, part of a large private collection of nineteenth century Coalport porcelain which sold at Gorringes, Lewes in February 2006. To the right, part of a large private collection of nineteenth century H & R Daniel English Porcelain which was also in the same sale. In our last edition we illustrated Daniel and Coalport porcelains due to be sold at Gorringes, Lewes, Sussex in Early 19thC Daniel and Coalport February 2006. The factories of course have no connection except their juxtaposition at the Sale. With so much emphasis on twentieth century collecting it would Porcelain Prices at Auction be interesting to see how these fine early nineteenth By John Ainsley century groups would fair in today’s market. Coalport is one of the great survivors in the industry. Emerging in difficult times near the very end of the eighteenth century in Shropshire, when the only existing Shropshire soft paste factory, Caughley, was nearing its end, its name survives today. The early Coalport outputs were hybrid hard paste. There is a museum on the old John Rose site not far from Ironbridge. Two streams of Coalport emerged, the John Rose factory and a second output ran by another company known as Anstice, Horton and Rose. They merged in 1814. The full story of Coalport porcelains can be found in Coalport and Daniel breakfast jug, Coalbrookdale Porcelains by Geoffrey A. Godden, first gadrooned shape, painted published in 1970. Decoration Decorative colours and patterns were applied to Coalport porcelain by dipping the piece into buckets of coloured glaze, dusting the glaze powder on and then hand-painting. Another important method of creating designs was transfer printing, where a line drawing was scratched into a copper plate, the ceramic colour was brushed over the plate and then wiped off, so it only Early Beginnings remained in the grooves. The plate was then put through The early history of Coalport is complicated. • Swansea Pottery from 1811 to Its Closure in 1870 by Arleen and Grahame Tanner the BEVINGTONS and TRANSFER-PRINTING at SWANSEA
Swansea Pottery from 1811 to Its Closure in 1870 By Arleen and Grahame Tanner THE BEVINGTONS AND TRANSFER-PRINTING AT SWANSEA. 1811-1824 After the departure of George Haynes from the Swansea Pottery, Haynes, in spite of being a trustee of the Cambrian Pottery, went ahead and purchased the adjoining property for his own use. Once the site was bought Haynes then decided to set up a soap works on this adjacent site. This action exacerbated the rift between L.W.Dillwyn and Haynes. The smell from the soap works was so pernicious as Dillwyn had expected that he took Haynes to court and won. Haynes and allies had, therefore, no option but to shut the soap works, the site thereof was then integrated into the Pottery. In spite of poor trading conditions consequent upon the Napoleonic Wars Dillwyn contin- ued the Pottery’s existence although at a very low ebb. The Cambrian newspaper indicates in its shipping intelligence that far less potting material was imported into Swansea during that period. Morton Nance suggests that ‘most of the sales at this time were local, i.e. Wales and the West of England’, but, of course, there would still have been agents travel- ling the country promoting sales of Swansea pottery both to individuals, to china ware- houses and retailers. In spite of the depression Swansea, apart from its scenic qualities, had many economic ad- vantages: it carried out an extensive trade with London and Birmingham in copper, and ex- ported coal to the west of England, Ireland and even to the Baltic so was able to export pottery as part cargo.
