‘There’s never enough help’ County’s 14 volunteer fire departments need help, have jobs for almost everyone

Lions Club’s Editor’s note: This is the second story in a two-part series by Times auction writers Jessi Dreckman and Sue Ann Jones reporting on the status to be held of Ozark County’s volunteer fire departments. Strong winds that whipped through parts of Ozark County Saturday afternoon destroyed this barn on the Darrell Watson farm near Wasola. Watson said the barn, which stood about quarter-mile from his house, held 35 round bales of hay. His grandson, Kane Watson, walked by the barn on his way into the woods Saturday afternoon. “He was gone 30 to 35 minutes,” Watson said. “When he came out, he called us and said the barn was standing when he went back in the woods, but it was on the ground when he came out.” At press time Tuesday the Times was unaware of any other structural damage from the winds. However, both Howell Oregon Electric Co-op and White River Valley Electric Co-op said some Ozark County customers had outages Saturday. WRVEC crews were out, system- wide, working until about midnight Saturday repairing lines brought down by falling trees or tree limbs or one power pole that broke, spokesperson Cassie Cunningham said. Howell-Oregon crews, working systemwide, were out until 4 a.m. Sunday repairing downed lines, said HOE spokesperson Dakota Bates. Falcons are Class 1 state runner-up Copyright Ozark County Times

HOLISTER – Only an Ozarker would technically attend eighth grade twice, drop out of high school, become a doc- tor and deliver the first baby born in the state of Alaska. Dr. Winsor “Verd” Morrison is that Ozarker. A native of Ozark County, Morrison grew up in the tiny community of Zanoni, where his family operated the town’s mill, store and post office. After serving in World War II, Morrison began a career that took him through several pro- fessions, all over the country, and alongside musician Porter Wagoner and baseball legend Bill Virdon. Eventually, that trip also took him to medical school — and to the Territory of Alaska, where he was employed with the U.S. Public Health Service. It was there, on Jan. 3, 1959, when he delivered the first baby born in Alaska after it became the 49th state.

Born into a family-fueled operation In contrast to his profession, it wasn’t a doctor who delivered Morrison in February 1925. Instead, it was a local midwife who came to the house and helped his mother, Alpha Bet, bring Morrison into the world. It’s unlikely, however, that she needed much help. Morrison was her 11th child, the next in line to know an Ozarks that, today, most have never met. Ozark County native Winsor “Verd” Morrison retired in Hollister after a career that included serving in World War “I grew up helping operate the mill,” says Morrison, who II, owning a West Plains ice cream shop and practicing medicine took him from Alaska to Mississippi – and notes his first name was too much for rural hill folk to several points in between. handle. Hardison, 28, of Gainesville, and Jordan Henderson, 20, of Protem, were injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash Saturday evening on Highway 160, east of County Road 814 near Spring Creek. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol online crash report, Hardison was driving a 2013 Kia Optima with Henderson as a passenger at 8:05 p.m. March 9 when the vehicle crossed the center line, ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned. The report indicates that neither Hardison or Henderson were wearing a seat- belt. Hardison was airlifted to Cox South Hospital in Springfield with injuries described as “serious” in the report. Henderson was transported by ambulance to Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Arkansas. The vehicle, a total loss, was towed from the scene. The crash was investigated by MSHP Trooper D. L. Nash.

She is the daughter of Theodosia Area VFD firefighter Craig Mierkowski. Chicago ICU nurse will lead CPR class March 23 in Theodosia With the help of Theodosia Area Volunteer Fire Department volunteers, family nurse practitioner student Ashley Mierkowski, daughter of TAVFD firefighter Craig Mierkowski, will lead a free, hands-only CPR class from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the TAVFD firehouse near Highway 160 and John Wesley Drive in Theodosia. The class, which is open to everyone, will include a short lecture, demonstrations and practice sessions. Ashley, who currently works as a registered nurse in an intensive care unit in a Chicago hospital, is pursuing family nurse practitioner credentials through a University of Missouri program. One of her classes requires her to complete “a community outreach project that will benefit any community and its members,” she said in an email to the Times. Because of her dad’s connection to the Theodosia / Lutie community, Ashley adopted, as her main objective, the goal of helping Lutie High School’s nurse find permanent CPR mannequins for LHS seniors to use. The Chicago hospital system she works for offered to donate CPR mannequins that were no longer used, Ashley said. Cindy Amore with Northwestern Medical Group in Chicago approved the donation, and the result was a gift of seven adult mannequins and 15 infant mannequins that would have cost several thou- sand dollars, Ashley said. The class is open to everyone. For more information, contact Ashley at 314-210-3062 or [email protected]. Owners Jacinda Hurst and Gesse Scheinert New diner – JWray’z – opens in Theodosia

by Norene Prososki [email protected]

The Dora Falcons brought home the Class 1 second-place trophy after Saturday’s battle with the Jefferson Eagles at JQH Arena in Springfield. Dora’s relentless defense kept the score close, and the Falcons came from behind and drew even at one point, tying it at 40-all. “They came out in the third and jumped right back on us pushing their lead back up,” said coach Rick Luna. “I had Haney and Mason in foul trouble, so that limited what we could do defensively. We couldn’t be as aggressive as we usually are. We made another run late to pull within 5 points, but it just wasn’t our day. “What most people don’t realize is Jefferson played nearly a perfect game. They only missed 7 shots for the entire game. That stat alone is unheard-of. For us to be as close as we were, playing against a team that was just simply ‘hot’ says a lot for my guys. They never gave up and kept fighting till the last buzzer. I couldn’t be more proud of these 16 young men for what they have accomplished,” he said. Midway through the fourth quarter, leading scorers Isaac Haney and Mason Luna fouled out, and although the Falcons rallied to within 5 points in the final minute, Dora eventually fell to Jefferson, 75-65. Haney and Mason Luna finished with 18 points. Bryson Luna scored 16, Auston Luna 10, Kyle Hambelton 2 and Waylon Masters 1. “Second place wasn’t the goal we set out for, but the boys had a great season. They won all three tournaments they were in, set a school record with 30 wins, made it further than any other team in school history, and along the way picked up a lot of incredible fans,” said Luna “The team and I want to thank everyone for traveling to our games and supporting us. In districts we played in front of standing-room-only at Cabool, then in Mountain Grove to a huge crowd, and then at Van Buren where it was standing-room- only again. At Springfield we played in front of five to six thousand people each day, and our fans were shining through. Heck, we had grown men dress up as mascots throwing rally towels out to the crowd. That, in itself, was pretty special. The boys absolutely think we have some of the best fans around. They’ve received many, many texts and phone calls from our fans, along with fans from surrounding school districts, congratulating them and telling them how fun they are to watch. Little kids would come up to them and want to take pictures with them. The boys will always remember the game, but they will also always remember how much support they had along this incredible ride,” Luna said. Luna and the team extended special thanks to Billy Buckwater of Billy’s Frame and Collision, Russ Gant of Mega Motor Sports, Terry Newton of Shelter Insurance, Doug Collins of Collins Trucking, the Dora Booster Club, First Home Bank, Kristin Lowther of Missouri Embroidery and Karla Smith Photography.

Dale Sanders, Agent Gainesville cleaner Dale Sanders Agency Inc By Jessi Dreckman [email protected] 12 Court Sq, Gainesville [email protected] Gainesville is a lot cleaner than it was a couple of months ago, thanks to Gainesville resident Nathaneil Davis and his Bus: (417)417-679-3000 679-0128 loyal canine companion Hitachi. Davis can be found most days walking alongside Highway 160, around the Gainesville square or on various side roads with a trash bag in tow and Hitachi by his side, picking up litter as he goes. The pair have spent more than 60 hours over the past couple of months dedicated to cleaning the trash off the highway, sweeping up cigarette butts on sidewalks and cleaning litter off the square. Davis, who was reluctant to give his name or be featured in the newspaper when approached by the Times, says he didn’t take on the project to get any type of praise or credit. So I just decid- ed to go ahead and clean it up.” Trash and discarded items Davis has come across include a windshield from a vehicle, litter from restaurant take-out, styrofoam cups, cans and a lot of other litter as well. At first, Davis was purchasing the trash bags himself, a pricy endeavor costing over $200. Now, the Missouri Department of Transportation maintenance shed in Gainesville donates the trash bags he needs and is picking them up from the roadway after Davis fills them. Gainesville city employee William Walrath has also donated trash bags, Davis said, adding that he no longer needs any additional donations of trash bags. When asked if local residents can help him in any other way, he said the only help he needs is easy. “Just stop littering,” he said. “That would be the biggest help I could get right now.” Girl Scouts collecting items for dogs and cats Local Girl Scout Troop 71227 is accepting donations of food, toys, treats and bedding for dogs or cats as part of their Paws Project. Donations can be dropped off in the Gainesville area during March at Town & Country Supermarket, Giles & Kendall, Ozark Computers or Gainesville Ag Supply.
