    INDIA 2020 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY India is a multiparty, federal, parliamentary democracy with a bicameral legislature. The president, elected by an electoral college composed of the state assemblies and parliament, is the head of state, and the prime minister is the head of government. Under the constitution, the country’s 28 states and eight union territories have a high degree of autonomy and have primary responsibility for law and order. Electors chose President Ram Nath Kovind in 2017 to serve a five-year term, and Narendra Modi became prime minister for the second time following the victory of the National Democratic Alliance coalition led by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2019 general election. Observers considered the parliamentary elections, which included more than 600 million voters, to be free and fair, although there were reports of isolated instances of violence. The states and union territories have primary responsibility for maintaining law and order, with policy oversight from the central government. Police are under state jurisdiction. The Ministry of Home Affairs controls most paramilitary forces, the internal intelligence bureaus and national law enforcement agencies, and provides training for senior officials from state police forces. Soon after, its stock took a beating of Mabout 11%, even though its topline grew to $250.5 million com- pared to $114.3 million in the year-ago quarter. It also added 3 million active users compared to just 1 million in Q1 of 2013. The financial reasons for the thumbs-down by Wall Street are obvious: despite growth in revenue and users, losses widened from $27 million in the year-ago quarter to over $132 million in the recent one. But even otherwise, there have been signs of trouble for the social media biggie for some time. Apparently, its efforts to cast itself more and more in the image of Facebook (by improving profiles, adding features such as Twitter Cards and Nearby, etc) are not getting it enough traction. There are other reasons as well. At one point, breaking news was THE PROBLEM touted as a big pull, but now Facebook and YouTube seem to be ahead WITH TWITTER IS in the game. Pew Research, for instance, is said to have found that only 8% of Twitter’s entire user base (it has over 240 million active monthly NOTJUST FINAN- users) uses it to stay updated with news. This is against 30% for Facebook and 10% for YouTube. CIAL NUMBERS; Another weakness, say critics, is that Twitter is not generating as much interest in markets outside the US as other social giants. Abadullah Hananzai Country of origin: Afghanistan Circumstances: Suicide bomb attack (Kabul, Afghanistan) Multiple deaths in same incident Hananzai was a video journalist for RFE/RL’s Radio Azadi (Radio Free Afghanistan). Hananzai was killed on April 30th 2018 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The suicide bomber responsible for the attack was disguised as a media worker and deliberately targeted the press, causing multiple fatalities. Islamic State issued an online statement the same day of the attack claiming responsibility. Hananzai most notably reported on drug addiction and the Interior Ministry’s attempts to crackdown on narcotics trafficking out of Afghanistan in a project called ‘Caravan of Poison.’ Whilst travelling around the country visiting the sites affected by suicide bombings, Hananzai acted as both a journalist and a humanitarian worker. During his career he had worked for Kabul News, Zhwandoon TV and the Educational and Cultural Centre for Afghan Women. Hananzai had recently graduated from Kabul University with a degree in Persian Literature. At the time of his death he was 26 years old.
