All submarines in the U.S. Navy are nuclear-powered. Ballistic subs have a single strategic mission of carrying nuclear submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Attack submarines have several tactical missions, including sinking ships and subs, launching cruise missiles, and gathering intelligence. Alligator was a US Navy submarine that was never commissioned. She was being towed to South Carolina to be used in taking Charleston, but she was lost due to bad weather 2 April 1863 off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

												  English Comes from the French: Guerre De CourseThe Maritime Transport War - Emphasizing a strategy to interrupt the enemy sea lines of communication1 (SLOCs) - ARAKAWA Kenichi Preface Why did the Imperial Japanese Navy not aggressively develop a strategy to interrupt the enemy sea line of communication (SLOC) during the Second World War? Japan’s SLOC connecting her southern and Asian continental fronts to the mainland were destroyed mainly by the U.S. submarine warfare. Consequently, Japanese forces suffered from shortages of provisions as well as natural resources necessary for her military power. Furthermore, neither weapons nor provisions could be delivered to the fronts due to the U.S. operations to disrupt the Japanese SLOCs between the battlegrounds and the Japanese home island. Thus soldiers on the front were threatened with starvation even before the battle. In contrast, the U.S. and British military forces supported long logistical supply lines to their Asian and Pacific battlegrounds. However, there are no records indicating that the Imperial Japanese Navy attempted to interrupt these vital sea lines. Surely Japanese officers were aware of the German use of submarines in World WarⅠ. Why did the Imperial Japanese Navy not adopt a guerre de course strategy, that is a strategy targeting the enemy merchant marine and logistical lines? The most comprehensive explanation indicates that the Imperial Japanese Navy had no doctrine providing for this kind of warfare. The core of its naval strategy was the doctrine of “decisive battles at any cost.” Under the Japanese naval doctrine submarines were meant to contribute to fleet engagements not to have an independent combat role or to target anything but the enemy fleet.

												  USS Argonaut (SS 166)USS Argonaut (SS 166) Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet USS ARGONAUT (SS 166) January 10, 1943 - 102 Men Lost > While operating in the area southeast of New Britain between 5 degrees and 50 east during her third patrol, ARGONAUT (Lt. Cmdr. J.R. Pierce) intercepted a Japanese convoy returning to Rabaul from Lae, on 10 January 1943. An U.S. Army plane, which was out of bombs, saw one destroyer hit by a torpedo, saw the explosion of two other destroyers, and reported other vessels in the group. After a severe depth charge attack ARGONAUT was forced to surface and the destroyers, according to the plane’s report, circled and pumped shells into her bow, which was sticking up at a considerable angle. This action took place in 5 degrees to 40 ‘S, 152 degrees to 02 ‘E, and further efforts to contact ARGONAUT by radio were fruitless. It is quite certain, then, that ARGONAUT met her end in this action. Japanese reports made available since the end of the war record a depth charge attack followed by artillery fire, at which time the “destroyed top of the sub floated.” ARGONAUT’s first patrol near Midway had resulted in no damage to enemy ships, but her second was a most successful one. It was conducted following a complete modernization at Mare Island. Her mission had been to cooperate with NAUTILUS in transporting 252 Marine officers and men to Makin Island for a diversionary raid against enemy shore installations. In the early morning of 17 August 1942, the raiders were debarked in boats.

August 15, 1949 The target characteristics of a Fleet type submarine, "USS Baya ", were examined under favourable experimental conditions by the Recognition method. This method consists of determining the target extent by standard asdic gear and interpreting the observa tions in terms of effective source levels, Relative target strengths are equivalent to the differences in effective source levels at which the targets are equally recognized. The principle echoing surface was in the region of the conning tower. Stern echoes were strongest on the stern and quarters. Several portions of the submarine contributed to the high target strength at beam aspect. The average strength of the conning tower was 9.8 ± 2 db. The remainder of the submarine contributed 1.7 db on the average, to give a mean target strength of 11,5 ±. 2 db. This is equivalent to the theoretical target strength of a sphere 45 feet in dia- meter. The range of 50%recognition of the submarine was approximately 3000 yards under the ranging conditions encountered. THE TARGET STRENGTH OF A FLEET SUBMARINE INTRODUCTION During November 1948, a joint project of American and Canadian naval research groups was carried out in Canadian waters to investigate the target characteristics of a Fleet-type USN submarine. This was the first occasion on which the target properties of a Fleet submarine were examined wit precision.
