PO BOX 2071 ● SALISBURY, MARYLAND 21802 ● 410-546-4444 http://www.esbhalloffame.org ● [email protected] Board of Directors & Officers Craig Shreeves, Chair John Alder Neil Helgeson Roger Shiles Patrick Murray, Vice Chair Donnie Davidson Brian Hollamon Charlie Silcott Julianne Murray, Treasurer/ Gary Fries Brian Laird Debbie Silcott Acting Secretary Kirkland Hall Bette McPhail Morris COVERING THE BASES January 2015 From the Chair Happy New Year from the Eastern Shore Baseball Foundation’s Board of Directors! Since our last newsletter in October, a lot has happened in the Foundation. First of all, we inducted five new members into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame at a very nice banquet at Salisbury University. Secondly, thanks to Curator Gary Fries and Historian Donnie Davidson, we are enhancing the museum displays and look forward to showing it off when the Shorebirds season starts in April. Lastly, the Board of Directors has undergone some changes. We lost a few long-time directors and have added directors who are eager to contribute to the Foundation’s success. As always, I encourage Foundation members to give us feedback or suggestions to improve YOUR organization – whether it’s regarding the museum, the website, the membership, the Board, etc. As the start of baseball season quickly approaches, I look forward to seeing you at the museum this Spring. A Word from our Curator The New Year has started for the Museum and we have started the remodeling! We are bringing the ballpark inside the museum by adding a fence to the Eastern Shore League Wall.

Wilson Spotlight Issue 224 July 28, 2009 www.wilson.pps.k12.or.us WILSON RISING JUNIOR TAKES HOME GOLD IN NATIONAL ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS Our very own Michael Evans (Class of '11), capped off a successful academic year with a stunning win at the Youth National Rowing Championships on June 14, 2009 in Cincinnati. He and his pairs partner Cameron McAlpine (Lincoln Graduate '09) row for Rose City Rowing Club, a private club in Portland that features athletes from all over the Portland metro area. They competed against 16 other crews from around the country over a 3 day period in the Men's Youth Pair category. They won their heat, semi- final, and final all with nice margins. Michael and Cameron took a boat-length lead in the first 500 meters and held on to win. "What is particularly impressive about this pair, is that they only started rowing this boat together in the past two months, after predominantly rowing larger boats with 8 rowers," adds Renee Pirkl Botero, Wilson parent. The transition to the smaller boat ended up to be very successful for Michael. Now, Michael along with Logan Pirkl, also a Wilson junior, are headed to Pittsburgh to spend four weeks, along with 35 other athletes from around the country, training at an invitational development camp for the Men's National Team with the hope of being selected to represent the U.S. as part of the 2010 National Team. Congratulations to Michael, son of Steve Evans and Sally Niles and Logan, son of Renee Pirkl Botero and Kirk Botero.

Barney DeForge “Luckie No More” ©DiamondsintheDusk.com On a seasonably warm Friday evening in Winston-Salem’s venerable Southside May 14, 1948 Park, the homestanding Cardinals, behind the two-hit pitching of lefty Jack Southside Park Frisinger, take the measure of visiting Reidsville 5-0 in one of four Carolina (D) Winston-Salem, North Carolina League games played that day. At first glance, it seems like just another day of minor league baseball in the Tar Heel State. After all, Winston-Salem, the league’s preseason favorite, currently resides in first place with an impressive 18-7 mark while the fifth-place Luckies drop to 9-12 and a full seven games behind their hosts. And being shutout by the 20-year-old Frisinger, a rising star in the St. Louis Car- dinals farm system, comes as no surprise to Carolina League fans. Said “to be faster than Harvey Haddix,” the burgeoning Cardinals ace limits the Luckies to a pair of singles en route to securing the third of an eventual team-high 18 wins. The 6-foot-1 Kalamazoo, Michigan, native strikes out seven and walks three in the route-going effort. However, several events that take place during the game that are suspicious and, unfortunately, a harbinger of problems to come, both for DeForge and the Carolina League. First, Winston-Salem officials report to the police there is a person in the stands “making heavy bets,” giving Reidsville and two runs which meant that if the Cardinals won by three or more runs, he will win all bets placed.
